It resembles a plant somewhere between a Southern pea and a mung bean. The long trailing vines have narrow pointed bean-like leaves. Pods and seeds resemble mung beans, and the roots are nodulated. Flowers pink or purplish, turning yellow, pea-like, 2.5 cm long. Because of its tuberous roots rather than its pods, the wild mung is held in fairly high esteem in some parts of the world. In Africa, the roots are eaten in times of severe hunger. It grows wild in the Himalayas and in the foothills of India. The tubers are soft, easy to peel, and possess a creamy, white, tasty interior. They are eaten boiled or raw. Protein content of the tubers is near the 15% level, which is high compared to the 1-7% for potatoes and yams. Slender climbers. Leaflets to 4.5 x 2 cm, ovate, acute at apex, rounded at base, strigose hairy; petiole 4 cm long; stipule cordate at base. Flowers solitary or 2-3 together; calyx 9 mm long, strigose hairy; lobes lanceolate; petals yellow; standard 3 x 3 cm, orbicular, wings 25 x 12 mm, auricled at base; keel 25-30 mm long, strongly spurred on lateral side. When the insect tries to sit on this keel the exerted pressure brings out the stamens and stigmas in front for transfer of pollens. This has been documented. Yes a fairly bigger flower amongst the Vigna
The wings and keel petals in this group are twisted to the left. If the right wing petal is straightened to the right, the bundle of stamens is exserted in a circular movement out of keel petals. Looking like species close to Vigna? Tri foliate leaf like Vigna radiata but flowers are pink. Also found yellow flowered Vigna plants. Pl. check comparative images at Vigna From images and description it is Vigna vexillata.
