This is a very common tree in Guindy National park.
.... You are right. The name is due to the umbrella like canopy.

Acacia planifrons Wight & Arn, introduced tree in the dry hills of Krishnagiri dt, Tamilnadu,
canopy is just like umbrella.
I still remember the bite of the spines. I think that recently the name has changed.  Please confirm.
