Nesting of birds on Acacia nilotica
:
Nesting of Birds on Acacia nilotica tree from Vill Mehmadpur Kunjpura Karnal haryana
These are Cattle Egrets in full breeding plumage.
If you permit me a minor modification: it should be 'breeding plumage', (and not) 'full breeding plumage' also called 'transient plumage' as it is very transient in these species and requires a close up image for correct plumage identification.
Acacia Syndrome: pls help
1. Acacia nilotica subsp. indica (Benth.) Brenan is an accepted<http://www.theplantlist.org/about/#accepted> name

I am attaching few pics pls help which name is correct for my plant.
attaching in some large size so that can be seen enlarged
Acacia nilotica (L.) Delile which was earlier known as A. arabica, has now two commonly recognised subspecies
Acacia nilotica (L.) Delile subsp. nilotica with glabrous pods...Plant found in Senegal; French Sudan; N. Nigeria; Eastern Sudan and Nile Land but not in Indian subcontinent
Acacia nilotica subsp. indica (Benth) Brenan...with tomentellous pods...found in Indian subcontinent
Vachelia nilotica being another goof up by Kew Plant List, but as there is no combination under this genus for Indian plant, we can ignore it. Your plant is obviously Acacia nilotica subsp. indica

very nice...  loved the vernacular names... and tree pic 2 and 7 in particular... the shapes are graceful...
wonder if any body has seen them in Bengal... (... ? ...? ...?? ...?? who else??)
when we were young this is what made our toothbrush every morning, we had to chew it to make the brush, even in our ultramodern western styled bathroom fittings!!! Grandfather's admonitions and mom making
sure we followed... and end result? None of us has had any tooth decay or cavities... till now In our fifth to seventh decade of life... its not completely genetic..because my uncles' kids who did not follow grandpa's advice... all have had their root canals dug up, cavities filled etc etc...

someone should do some solid science based research... I am not a dentist otherwise I sure would do it...
or would have had graduate students/residents who could... ANY DENTIST AMONG our eflora family???
Ayurvedic textbooks do mention tooth protective actions in some details, so its not patentable, so no mercenary ideated man or woman should take hold of this story of mine... and turn it into a personal
profit...
others with benevolent ideas to help humanity are most welcome to take this as a starting point to start looking...
Or other s with similar stories, please share
This is a very common tree in Bengal - may not be seen in proper Kolakta, but otherwise a common road side tree in suburb.
Enjoyed your nice chilhood memories - we knew about it's medicinal tooth strengthing property though I myself did not use it.

Acacia for ID :: Thane :: ARKDEC15
: 9 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (5)
This was seen in a cultivated garden in Thane in December 2016.
Is this some Acacia? Requested to please ID this.
Pl. check Acacia nilotica?
Also check comparative images at Vachellia
Is this a big tree or a shrub. Please clarify. Also let me know whether the flowers are  fragrant (highly scented). For me it looks more like Acacia farnesiana (Mimosa bush, Needle bush, Cassia flower) .   Please check all the characters.
Appears to be Vachellia nilotica (L.) P.J.H. Hurter & Mabb. The subspecies should be indica.
Need to check the characters (inluding the points raised by me) again by the person who has posted the pictures  for proper ID.
Apologies for the delayed response, I was travelling and hence could not reply.
The plant when photographed appeared to be a small tree, around 4-5 ft in height.
As regards smell, I do not recollect any specific fragrance, but to be honest, I did not check.

One of the things I like is observing is flora-fauna interaction.
Posted here are images of Baya Weaver (Ploceus phillipinus) nests (-6128) on a Vachellia nilotica tree.
This tree appears to be a particular favorite of the bird, where available The nests are often on branches that are overhanging a water body, as seen here.
-6212 is a close up of the bird with nesting material on a branch.

Clicked these Acacia pics at Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, Jodhpur, RJ, March 2018.

¿ Vachellia ?
Dear friends,
I am not sure whether this tree is any Vachellia ... my guess: Vachellia nilotica subsp. tomentosa.
I could not see any thorns. Leaves bipinnate, paripinnate. I see a gland between the lowermost pair of pinnae. Please help validate the ID to genus level, as I could not get any closer to the tree.

I also feel closer to images at
Yes absence of spines is puzzling.
May be we check some descriptions regarding this.

I think Vachellia nilotica subsp. tomentosa does not bear spines.
Hope someone validates the ID; not sure whether the posted pictures suffice for validation.

If the spines are absent then this will not be Vachellia.
Anyway, there is an addition to Acacia nilotica group  in India.
Please see the highlighted portion of the attachment.

Thanks very much ... for the information.
I read the description for Vachellia nilotica subsp. kraussiana at Plantz Africa.
It say the plant has long spines.
I thought Vachellia nilotica subsp. tomentosa bears no spines;
Hopefully next time when I go to the site will get pictures of its pods.
In absence of spines and prickles this should be a member of Acacia proper, and again may be an introduced species. I am knowing two such introduced species, now naturalized in certain areas, both devoid of spines, A. decurrens and A. dealbata and having the heads arranged in panicles and this is likely to be one of them, possibly A. dealbata as the leaflets are not sharply decurrent at the base.

Thanks, ...
I checked both the species, but not seem to match as per the following:
http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Acacia+decurrens
In that case another introduced species unknown to me.
Thanks ... I believe the posted plant is Acacia nilotica subsp. nilotica ... not far from my guess Acacia nilotica subsp. tomentosa (not accepted widely).
The posted plant is in vicinity of a large stream.
I have read that the matured trees of Acacia nilotica subsp. nilotica shed their thorns / spines.
Here is page of a book - The CABI Encyclopedia of Forest Trees ... I hope it is available for reading. There is another reference page at Tropical Forages.
