ID No. 220312 -91- MS- Acacia farnesiana: Yes ..., it does look like Acacia farnesiana. Nice pictures! ..., is this Acacia farnesiana that you had mentioned in my other Acacia post? Kindly confirm. Yes indeed.
Complete plant is clearly seen, which we often missed in the madness of close ups. This tree was shot from Yamuna river bank, Panipat in March 2009, no fruits were seen at that time. The tree is not common in our area, found in arid, sandy tracts. Fabaceae-Mimosoideae (Mimosaceae) Week: Acacia farnesiana: Acacia farnesiana Dev babhul . देव बाभूळ Differs from Acacia nilotica by pods and its very fragrant flowers. Generally smaller than the latter.

Id help appreciated. It has to be Acacia farnesiana. देव बाभूळ The flowers are very similar to Acacia nilotica but the characteristic difference is the fragrance and the pods which are not flat but turgid and without the narrow grooves seen between the seeds as in Acacia nilotica pods . I was also amazed when I saw the species first time similar to you. I can see some typical pods in your pictures. Another characteristic (not sure whether it's diagnostic) feature of this species is a tiny (1-2 mm) red gland on the petiole. Will post the image of this gland in a separate thread. Yes, beautiful catch of Acacia farnesiana.
Excellent shot! especially the second one... whoa, what the heck is this... looks like a land mine from sci-fi movie... only its growing on a tree. very interesting picture of flower to fruit transformation. I can share with you ... that I really enjoy observing this transformation, in fact there are many common fruits whose flowers I had never appreciated or was simply unaware of them until I got interested in flower watching.
Date : 01/01/2013 Location: Kamrup district (Rural) Family : Mimosaceae Genus & species : Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd. Habitat: Grows wild on roadside. Habit : Tree Vern. Name : Torua-kadam (Assamese) Flower : Yellow Fruits : Not seen Nice Set ... This may be A farnesiana but no much thorns are seen on branches which is characteristic feature of this plant. Pls also check weather having any fragrance or not. Flowers of A farnesiana have fragrance. Acacia farnesiana. Called as Dev babhul देव बाभूल in Marathi.Family: Mimosaceae. Good to know this is present in Assam too. The pods are characteristic. Thick swollen rather than flat and almost joint-less as against those of Acacia nilotica. The branches are somewhat zigzag as seen here and yes the unforgettable fragrance. Actually I had taken the sent images of the Acacia farnesiana in hurry which was my mistake. Sorry for that. But today I visited the same place and observed & found the following characterisic of the species as you said. - Strong fragrance. - Spine present (Images attached) Yes. This makes the complete set! This is the advantage of the forum. You or any other member can keep on adding/modifying information in the same thread. This helps in knowing the line of thinking....

Vasai Killa Kannada names and transliteration are correct. The plant is seen in open fields in Mysore. Flowers are highly fragrant & used in French perfume. Thank you very much … for validating the Kannada names. During compilation of names of this plant, I found that people of most regions seemed to have their own perspective of the scent emitted by the plant. Going through names, some names indicate fragrant plant, while some express it to be fetid !! Perhaps, some aspect of the plant is fragrant and another fetid.
