Senna polyphylla (Jacq.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 35: 517, 1982
Syn: Cassia polyphylla Jacq.; Cassia marginata Willd.
The two species are often confused on most websites. Here are the differences
Senna polyphylla: Small evergreen tree or shrub, 7 to 12 feet tall (2-3.6 m); strong
taproot; 3 to 15 pairs of leaflets, 0.16 to 0.4 inch long (4-10 mm)
Senna pallida: Deciduous to semi-deciduous shrub, up to 6 to 8 feet tall (1.8-2.4 m), 3 to 5 feet in spread (0.9-1.5 m); pinnate leaves, 2 to 3 inches long (5-7.5 cm), 4 to 6 pairs of light green leaflets
Senna polyphylla, Photographed from Delhi University campus photographed in September, it is a tree with 9-11 pairs of leaflets.

I think Cassia polyphylla, now Senna polyphylla
Agreed Sir
Thanks ... More leaflets clearly seen so Senna polyphylla.

cassia biflora:  cassia biflora is a ornamental small tree or bush.
It is also known as Cassia bicapsularis

Thanks, The pods of Cassia biflora and cassia bicapsularis are not same. Pl checked.
I checked GRIN, the database that I rely most. Cassia biflora Linn. has been declared as nom. utique rej by Botanical Code ( and such can't be an accepted name), and the name often used by other authors is more correctly C. pallida Vahl. The species of Cassia with 10 perfect stamens are now placed under genus Senna, and as such correct name for the species is Senna pallida (Vahl) H. S. Irwin & Barneby, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 35: 531, 1982.
Cassia bicapsularis is a distinct species.

Sir how to differentiate btw/n Cassia biflora and not Senna polyphylla ??
There is a mail on this topic by me. You may try to help out. https://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/d3...
Valid Name for Cassia biflora now is Senna pallida (Vahl) H.S.Irwin & Barneby.
Some site consider both Cassia bifloa and Senna polyphylla synonym but these are different
And I could find much information
Senna Biflora: Deciduous to semi-deciduous shrub, up to 6 to 8 feet tall (1.8-2.4 m), 3 to 5 feet in spread (0.9-1.5 m); pinnate leaves, 2 to 3 inches long (5-7.5 cm), 4 to 6 pairs of light green leaflets
Senna polyphylla: Small evergreen tree or shrub, 7 to 12 feet tall (2-3.6 m); strong taproot; 3 to 15 pairs of leaflets, 0.16 to 0.4 inch long (4-10 mm)
Thanks ..., you found out something. There should be something in flowers and fruits. Let us find out.
Yes ...

The confusion between Senna pallida (Cassia biflora L.) perhaps not as simple as we thought. The confusion started with several websites treating two as synonyms, giving the impression that perhaps two are very close and as such we have separated many plants with shrubby habit and lesser number of leaflets as Senna pallida and one more or less tree like habit and more than 7 leaflets as Senna polyphylla.
After going though various reliable sources I came to know than Senna polyphylla is very distinct from Senna pallida.
Senna pallida (syn Cassia biflora L.) Small shrub up to 3.5 m tall, stems slender; leaf stalk with two orange dots on petiole, base of petiole and leaflets swollen at base; leaf 5-6 cm long, leaflets 4-7 pairs, 2-3 cm long, 1.5 cm broad, widest near apex, base and apex rounded, veins obscure; flowers bright yellow , 3 cm across, in pairs on 2 cm long pedecels; fruit dry, flattened, 6-8 cm long, 3-5 mm broad, repeated x pattern on surface.
Senna polyphylla: Desert cassia Shrub or small tree: often 5 m tall; leaves often clustered 3-5 together at each node; leaflets 3-15 pairs, 5-10 mm long; flowers yellow 3.8 cm across, axillary racemes of two flowers; pod 8-15 cm long, slightly contorted, flattened between seeds.
Looking at smaller size of leaflets and leaves more or clustered it appears that photographs uploaded recently under both names actually all belong to Senna polyphylla and we may have to still locate true specimens of Senna pallida like we are still looking for Senna surattensis.

Thanks .... for short key, which helped me to sort my photographs. I had raised this query in my earlier mail
Some websites consider Senna polyphylla and Senna pallida as synonyms

Senna pallida (Vahl) H.S.Irwin & Barneby syn: Cassia biflora L.; Cassia biflora Griseb.; Cassia pallida Vahl.

Obviously the two species are very closely related. Could any member explore and find real differences between the two species so that identity of our plant can be fixed.
.. provided the answer today, a short key but very helpful
My plant photographed from Delhi University campus photographed in September, it is a tree with 9-11 pairs of leaflets, well fitting into latter species

Probably a Senna species. Close-ups of foliage, flowers would be very helpful.
The first photograph of ... appears to be Senna pallida (Cassia biflora auct.),
Cassia biflora I hope?
Yes, for me too this looks like Cassia biflora
this is Cassia biflora
This is the plant that is likely a Senna species; ID will still likely require a close-up or better-focused pictures.
Senna polyphylla as per thread:

Pl. Check comparative images at Senna page in efi site.
Senna auriculata (L.) Roxb. ???

No. I think it should be Senna polyphylla (Jacq.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby as per images herein.
Couple of persons suggested it could be Senna auriculata instead of Senna polyphylla.

Thanks, ... If you check the images yourself of both species, you will know.

this is observed in UNA. Himachal pradesh.
height from sea level :700 mtr
habitat :  cultivated

Pl. check images at
To me appears close.

Closeup of the flowers showing all the details and fruits are necessary for proper ID. Hence ID cannot be confirmed based on these photographs.   Nevertheless, you may also check for  Cassia auriculata (old name) as well.

Thanks ..., I think it is very close.
