Prosopis juliflora or Muskat or Muskat kikkar Flora of Panipat: Prosopis juliflora from IOCL Panipat Refinery Area: Prosopis juliflora from IOCL panipat refinery area and with fruits from a village Near Karnal juliflora at twilight. Clicked in mid-July in a scrubland near Madanpura, Kachchh. Have never seen it on armed vegetation before and it did endure some abrasion. Having read the following comment by Salim Ali, I faced Prosopis juliflora for any sign of bird-life but encountered a chameleon! "In recent years Prosopis juliflora has been widely planted by the Forest Department in the barren salt-lands bordering the Rann as part of their desert reclamation programme. It has taken well, and now forms flourishing and extensive thickets here and there. Curiously enough, in spite of the shade it provides in a land where any shade is welcome and, contra its congener P. spicigera, this species is studiously avoided by birds of all kinds." - Salim Ali, September 1960 [A Bird's Eye View, vol. 1, pg. 387] May be during his period respected Salim Ali didnt see much birds sitting on the tree but it is well known that Prosopis juliflora is well used by many birds for nesting. Beautiful photograph ! These are mine. As the Kachchh district of Gujarat has the wide spread invasion of this exotic species, Prosopis juliflora and it is well known among all. It is my pleasure to share few images of Prosopis juliflora (Fabaceae) Habit: Shrub-Medium sized tree Habitat: Wild, Scrub forest Sighting: Kadur, Chikmagalur, Karnataka, about 900 msl Date: 14-06-2014, 13-07-2014, 12-01-2015 and 08-11-2015 Flora of Smriti van,Jaipur: Hindi name खेजड़ी Scientific Name Prosopis cineraria Family Fabaceae Photo taken 5.4.2009 At- Smiriti Van, Jaipur, Rajastan, India Description Rajasthan State Tree This tree is very common in South India. It is a sacred tree in Tamil Nadu and common name in Tamil is 'Vanni'. Prosopis cineraria is a multipurpose tree species: provides fodder, fuel, timber, and shade It brings about soil improvement and also helps in sand dune stabilization. It is commonly used in dryland agroforestry in India and Pakistan. I think it is the state tree of Rajasthan(India) and provincial tree of the Sindh province of Pakistan. Its synonym is P. spicigera. Here in Mysore, there are many trees closeby my house. I never knew this tree is common in Tamil Nadu; thought its presence is rare. I always have the difficulty in separating this from P.juliflora. I don't feel very confident about the identification of above photograph as P. cineraria, because the spines are clearly longer, stronger and paired, and inflorescence much denser. Both P. juliflora and P. cineraria grow in Delhi and they are quite distinct. In P. cineraria the spines are much shorter, solitary and randomly scattered, it is a taller tree, the spikes are slender, more yellower in colour and lax. It is also common to see rounded insect galls hanging from the tree. pods are slightly flattened and curved P. juliflora is a medium sized tree or shrub, the spines are longer and paired in leaf axils. The infloresnce is much more dense and pale yellow or creamy in colour, with greenish tinge. the pods are slender, long and cylindrical. I am uploading both species separately. VALMIKI : OBSERVER OF NATURE 37: Attaching the image of 37 th member of the series. Valmiki mentioned SHAMI in his Ramayan. This tree is mentioned in Mahabharat also. Before entering the kingdom of Virat raj, the Pandavs hide their weapons on a Shami tree. This tree is known as Jand in hindi. In Rajasthan it is known as Khejri. Scientifically it is known as Prosopis cineraria. The pods of this tree is eaten as a vegetable in Rajasthan and it is known as Sangri. You could have mentioned that Prosopis cineraria is also treated as a holy tree by the Bisnois. It is a hardy tree growing in arid areas practically living on moisture and scanty rainfall. This is the reason as to why the Bisnois have symbolised the Khejri tree in their religion alongwith the Black Bucks(Antelope cervicapra).363 Bisnois(of which69 were women) laid down their lives at a village Khejarla in Jodhpur in 1778 to protect the Khejri trees. It was the beginning of the CHIPKO movement later used by Sunderlal Bahuguna to protect trees in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. The sacrifice was led by Amrita Beniwal (wife of Ramukhor) and her three daughters. So this tree bears a special significance. The king under whose orders his minister Girdhar Das went to cut the trees and executed the massacre was Abhay Singh of then kingdom Jodhpur Marwar.
