Reptilian visitor on Prosopis juliflora:  An Indian Chameleon ploughing through the barbed limbs of Prosopis
juliflora
at twilight.
Clicked in mid-July in a scrubland near Madanpura, Kachchh. Have never seen it on armed vegetation before and it did endure some abrasion.
Having read the following comment by Salim Ali, I faced Prosopis juliflora for any sign of bird-life but encountered a chameleon!
"In recent years Prosopis juliflora has been widely planted by the Forest Department in the barren salt-lands bordering the Rann as part of their desert reclamation programme. It has taken well, and now forms flourishing  and extensive thickets here and there. Curiously enough, in spite of the shade it provides in a land where any shade is welcome and, contra its congener P. spicigera, this species is studiously avoided by birds of all kinds." - Salim Ali, September 1960 [A Bird's Eye View, vol. 1, pg. 387]
May be during his period respected Salim Ali didnt see much birds sitting on the tree but it is well known that Prosopis juliflora is well used by many birds for nesting.
Beautiful photograph ! These are mine.
As the Kachchh district of Gujarat has the wide spread invasion of this exotic species, Prosopis juliflora and it is well known among all. Seed of this species was spread by "HELICOPTER" on the frieng of Rann (DESERT) to
combat its spread and also declared as "Royal Plant" during time of SMT. INDIRA GANDHI".

the important thing is that, during the last four year of field work in the Kachchh and Saurashtra, i found that some indigenous species (specially climbers) have been established good associated with Prosopis juliflora.
Among the two climber were reported as threatened.
IN the case of local society, during the 3 year permission to make charcoal from *Prosopis juliflora,* people of Kachchh made Charcoal of crores but the important thing is that certain people have been identify some traditional  uses of various parts of *Prosopis juliflora* specially in their traditional medicinal system.  i am preparing one article on that and when it will get published, i will forward to all of you.
if any of us having such literature regarding to this, please send me for my strong references work.

Fabaceae - Mimosoideae - Bangalore - RA - Prosopis juliflora - Mesquite Tree: The Mesquite has been introduced in Asia and Africa and is now wide spread in the semi-arid areas of the world. In many areas, it is considered a weed.
It is a drought resistant small tree, and has been planted in dry areas of Delhi. It is a deciduous thorny shrub or small tree, to 12 m tall; trunk to 1.2 m in diameter, bark thick, brown or blackish, shallowly fissured; leaves compound, commonly many more than 9 pairs, the leaflets are mostly 5–10 mm long, linear-oblong, glabrous, often hairy, commonly rounded at the apex; stipular spines, if any, yellowish, often stout; flowers perfect, greenish-yellow, sweet-scented, spikelike; corolla deeply lobate. Pods several-seeded, strongly compressed when young, thick at maturity, more or less constricted between the seeds, 10–25 cm long, brown or yellowish, 10–30-seeded.
Mesquite pods are among the earliest known foods of prehistoric man in the new world. Today flour products made from the pods are still popular, although only sporadically prepared, mostly by Amerindians. Pods are made into gruels, sometimes fermented to make a mesquite wine

Prosopis chilensis (Molina) Stuntz near Ahmedabad : 7 posts by 6 authors. Attachments (6).
The id was based on presence of nodal spines, not prickles. [ref Fl. MH (Almeida) 2:224]
In spoken english, the terms are used more or less interchangeably, but  botanically, thorns are derived from shoots; spines are derived from leaves and prickles are derived from the epidermis thus can be removed more easily and cleanly than thorns and spines.
..., this species should be an addition to eFI database if id stands group scrutiny.

Arid region plant. My first post Sir.
I am much confused on the identity of this species..
Please check the link
This should be Prosopis juliflora, a native of Americas.
As ... said, the nomenclature may be confusing, as P. chilensis is often (incorrectly) treated synonymous.
Yes I am also agree with ...  It is P. juliflora and exotic invasive plant.
About P. chilensis, it may not be occur in India.

I am awaiting reply from the authors of the monograph.
...: Thank You for your personal views.

Flora of Smriti van,Jaipur: Hindi name खेजड़ी
Scientific Name Prosopis cineraria
Family Fabaceae
Photo taken 5.4.2009
At- Smiriti Van, Jaipur, Rajastan, India
Description Rajasthan State Tree

This tree is very common in South India. It is a sacred tree in Tamil Nadu and common name in Tamil is 'Vanni'. Prosopis cineraria  is a  multipurpose tree species: provides  fodder, fuel,  timber, and shade    It brings about soil improvement and also helps in sand dune stabilization. It is commonly used in dryland agroforestry in India and Pakistan. I think it is the state tree of Rajasthan(India) and provincial tree of the Sindh province of Pakistan. Its synonym is P. spicigera. Here in Mysore, there are many trees closeby my house.
I never knew this tree is common in Tamil Nadu; thought its presence is rare. I always have the difficulty in separating this from P.juliflora
I don't feel very confident about the identification of above photograph as P. cineraria, because the spines are clearly longer, stronger and paired, and inflorescence much denser.
Both P. juliflora and P. cineraria grow in Delhi and they are quite distinct. In P. cineraria the spines are much shorter, solitary and randomly scattered, it is a taller tree, the spikes are slender, more yellower in colour and lax. It is also common to see rounded insect galls hanging from the tree. pods are slightly flattened and curved
P. juliflora is a medium sized tree or shrub, the spines are longer and paired in leaf axils. The infloresnce is much more dense and pale yellow or creamy in colour, with greenish tinge. the pods are slender, long and cylindrical.
I am uploading both species separately.
I also feel it is closer to images at Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC.

VALMIKI : OBSERVER OF NATURE 37:  Attaching the image of 37 th member of the series. Valmiki mentioned SHAMI in his Ramayan. This tree is mentioned in Mahabharat also. Before entering the kingdom of Virat raj, the Pandavs hide their weapons on a Shami tree. This tree is known as Jand in hindi. In Rajasthan it is known as Khejri. Scientifically it is known as Prosopis cineraria. The pods of this tree is eaten as a vegetable in Rajasthan and it is known as Sangri.
You could have mentioned that Prosopis cineraria is also treated as a holy tree by the Bisnois. It is a hardy tree growing in arid areas practically living on moisture and scanty rainfall. This is the reason as to why the Bisnois have symbolised the Khejri tree in their religion alongwith the Black Bucks(Antelope cervicapra).363 Bisnois(of which69 were women) laid down their lives at a village Khejarla in Jodhpur in 1778 to protect the Khejri trees. It was the beginning of the CHIPKO movement later used by Sunderlal Bahuguna to protect trees in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. The sacrifice was led by Amrita Beniwal (wife of Ramukhor) and her three daughters. So this tree bears a special significance. The king under whose orders his minister Girdhar Das went to cut the trees and executed the massacre was Abhay Singh of then kingdom Jodhpur Marwar.
Your images here look like those of Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC. as per images herein rather than of Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce as per images herein.
Where & when were the images taken ?
