As per efi thread : Both P. juliflora and P. cineraria grow in Delhi and they are quite distinct. It is also common to see rounded insect galls hanging from the tree. pods are slightly flattened and curved P. juliflora is a medium sized tree or shrub, the spines are longer and paired in leaf axils. Having read the following comment by Salim Ali, I faced Prosopis juliflora for any sign of bird-life but encountered a chameleon! "In recent years Prosopis juliflora has been widely planted by the Forest Department in the barren salt-lands bordering the Rann as part of their desert reclamation programme. It has taken well, and now forms flourishing and extensive thickets here and there. Curiously enough, in spite of the shade it provides in a land where any shade is welcome and, contra its congener P. spicigera, this species is studiously avoided by birds of all kinds." - Salim Ali, September 1960 [A Bird's Eye View, vol. 1, pg. 387] May be during his period respected Salim Ali didnt see much birds sitting on the tree but it is well known that Prosopis juliflora is well used by many birds for nesting. Acacia photographed at Camp, Pune on 19th Jan 12. It was a small tree. The stem was thorny. Leaves r double-compound, pinnae 13-18 pairs. Flowers were green n yellow spikes. Fruit was flat pod. Plz Id. This should be Prosopis chilensis (Molina) Stuntz. Some Prosopis for sure but cant tell the species... It is commonly used in dryland agroforestry in India and Pakistan. I think it is the state tree of Rajasthan(India) and provincial tree of the Sindh province of Pakistan. Its synonym is P. spicigera.
