Desmodium for ID : Attachments (8). 3 posts by 2 authors.
Observed this climber on the ground running on grass in open spaces at different locations in Pune. Sep 2013
I think this is Desmodium scorpiurus.
Fabaceae
Pl.validate.
The description of the plant which is matching with that in BSI flora is as follows
Herbs, stems straggling, wiry grooved, hairy.
Leaves 3 foliolate; alternate.Leaflets 3-7cm x 1.5- 4cm., ovate oblong apex obtuse, base rounded. hairy on both surfaces.
Flowers white purplish, in terminal and axillary racemes, Pods linear moniliform, 4-6 cm long, 6-8 jointed, hairy.
I think it is.
My similar looking post from Maharashtra Nature Park, Mumbai was identified as Desmodium scorpiurus.
Yes. ... I have checked your post. It seems to be same. I couldn't find any other post of this species on the group.

Desmodium scorpiurus from Borivali National Park : VG-JAN-02 : 6 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (2)
Sharing some images of Desmodium scorpiurus (Sw.) Desv. flowering in the north end of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (aka Borivali National Park) in Mumbai.
This herb is uncommon in SGNP and was reported only from the fringe areas of the forest during the Botanical Survey of India's floristic survey of SGNP (published in March 2005).
"Though not collected from the National Park proper, its occurrence there cannot be ruled out since the localities cited above ['Aarey colony & Thane'] are in close vicinity of the park." - p. 204, Flora of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (by SG Pradhan, BD Sharma & NP Singh), BSI, 2005.
Photographed today near Gandhi Tekri in Borivali National Park, North Mumbai.
Had posted some photos of all the plant parts last year (and it was identified by ...). These can be seen in the thread linked herewith
Many thanks ... for sharing this plant; and thanks to ... too. I have seen them some years back in scrub forests on outskirts of Thane, and I am sure, will need to be correction in my notes.
It looks as if this plant is on the way to becoming a very widespread weed due to its adaptability.
Ten years ago it was much less common but I seem to see it all over the place these days in the Mumbai area.
There is no mention of it in Cooke's flora.
It is native to tropical regions of America.

Thanks ... for your observations on the ominous dispersal of this plant over the years in and around Mumbai. I haven't come across any dense populations yet, just some sparse growth here and there.
Found these notes in an old agriculture periodical:
"Desmodium scorpiurus. This legume is a recent introduction from Australia. It is a creeping perennial legume, freely rooting at nodes, providing a dense few-inch thick cover throughout the year. The legume has resisted frost and shown active growth during spring and monsoons. The legume is propagated by seeds which are formed in plenty. It has proved promising for checking soil erosion..." - The Indian Journal of Agricultural Sciences, Volume 27, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 1957.
I too have seen this plant in lawns of corporation gardens in Pune, growing gregariously.

To me it is Desmodium scorpiurus (Sw.)Desv.

Thanks ... May I also request you to comment on another thread pasted below:
no, not pycnospra. check desmodium scorpiurus

Thank you ..., will check the alternative.

Your other posted plant  also appears to be Desmodium scorpiurus an increasingly very common plant both in Alibag and Virar areas.
The pod in your image is too immature to be representative.
I cannot comment on the species rooting at the nodes and could not observe this character in ... earlier post.

PLEASE READ AS 'PYCNOSPORA' LUTESCENS'

I guess correct ID.. Pycnospora lutescens (Poir.) Schindl.

Desmodium scorpiurus (Sw.)Desv. By ... as per another thread.

Genus Desmodium and Pycnospora are differentiated on their pods, being jointed or not (distinctly) jointed respectively. The immature fruit seen here does not seem jointed.
... mentioned (same thread that has ... comment) in his post that D scorpiurus is 'freely rooting at nodes' whereas here there was no rooting at nodes.
Will communicate with ... and ask her to comment on this thread as also my other post labeled Pycnospora.

Pycnospora lutescens? 1/2, for id confirmation, Alibag : 6 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (7)
08-11-2015, Alibag.
This plant remained in the unidentified folder due to the poor quality of images until I saw a similar plant in Virar last weekend (and it is posted separately).
Habit: trailing herb (wild), (on ground among other vegetation)
Habitat: waste land close to the beach.
Flower: pink, 1-2 cm or so,
Stipule: prominent, like an auricle, hairy
Whole plant was hairy (stem, pedicle, calyx, stipule)
Leaf: trifoliate; veins prominent on lower surface.
Fruit: very immature but is not indented at suture lines and not jointed.
Please confirm or correct.

If pod is inflated it is almost close to Pycnospora luetescens; there some deviation in the leaf shape.

Thank you ... I will appreciate if you could explain the deviation in leaf shape and whether the lack of joints in the pod is not enough evidence of Pycnospora (as there were no mature pods on the plant to see whether they were inflated or not.)

The leaflets are normally obovate, but they are not here; pod inflated.; in brief, it has leaves and pods like Crotalaria; flowers like Desmodium
