ID confirmation MS270311 -19 - Birds on Delonix elata: I am posting a few photos of birds on trees. This mail is on Delonix elata.  Can somebody ID the birds also.
- The comorants are most likely Little Cormorants. The other birds are also Painted Storks.
- Agree. The black birds are Cormorants the others Painted Storks.
I am really glad to read that Villagers protect the birds. Here in Germany many fishermen consider Cormorants as a Rival who eats away the fish and every year there is a big discussion, whether Cormorants should be shooted down. Some illegal shooting takes place too.
In China trained Cormorants are used by fishers to catch the fish. They tie the neck of the bird and let him go. The bird dives, catches a fish, but can't gulp it. The fisherman thus gets the fish. read more on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cormorant_fishing

PR-180411-For ID- Bangalore.: Please help me id this tree with mimosa-like leaves, growing in a village
45 kms from Bangalore.
It was covered with white flowers which turned a mustard -yellow  and had flat seed pods. I am afraid I did not check to see if the flowers were perfumed. The trunk was very irregular (I'm not sure how it is to be described!) Gnarled and ropey?
- Nice pictures of Delonix elata of Caesalpiniaceae. Called as 'Vaadha narayanan' or 'Vaadha mudakki' in Tamil. As the names suggest, it is used for the treatment of rheumatic arthritis (hope .. has some interesting info on this too). This African plant is commonly planted as an avenue tree in many parts of India. It can be easily propagated by stem cuttings.
- yes it is Delonix elata (L.) Gamble, Fl. Madras Pres. 396, 2929; Almeida, Fl. Mah. 2: 191 1998; Singh et al, Fl. Mah. St. 1: 803, 2000. Synonyms: Poinciana elata L., Cent. Pl. 2: 16, 1758; Baker in Hook.f., Fl. Brit. India 2: 260, 1878; Cooke, Fl. Pres. Bombay 1: 442, 1958 (Repr.)
Common names: Safed gulmohar.
Origin: Native of Tropical Africa and Asia
- Delonix alata. These trees are found in large numbers in Kokkare Bellur, the famous bird sanctuary near Maddur. Last month I posted the pictures showing birds on this tree to the group. These trees are also seen on Mahabalipuram road near the Golden Beach, Palavakkam in Chennai ( for the information of Dr. ...).

Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae (Caesalpiniaceae) Week: Tree for ID ?Delonix Chennai: I have photographed this tree in Crocodile park near Chennai. It is pending for ID for long time.
Does it look like white variety of Delonix regia?

Can it be Delonix elata?
cant tell,,,, wish you had a pic of a fallen flower...
Delonix elata for sure. Vaadha narayana or vatanarayana in Tamil.
The tree has medicinal importance. The leaves possess heat nature and have a bitter taste. They are used in the preparation of spicy kuzhambu and thuvayal (Tamil Nadu preparations). Regular intake of these preparations helps to control joint pain, arthritis, and other nervous and bone related complaints associated with swellings. The leaves can be included in food preparations and consumed once a week to support general
immunity.
(Reference. http://tamildictionary.50webs.com/herbs/TAMILHERBS.pdf).
Please the earlier postings from me on this tree.
I was also believing it to be Delonix elata.
There were 1 or 2 trees of this in Willingdon Sports Club, Mumbai a few years ago.

I MS270311 -19 - Caesalpinae week - Birds on Delonix elata: This mail is on Delonix elata. Posted earlier during April 2011. Forwarded again during the caesalpinae week. Place Kokkare Bellur. Photographs taken on 27th March 2011
