Crotalaria spectabilis Roth: This herb was photographed from Karnal District, in December 2011 growing abundantly along a water channel. This is known as Showy rattlebox or showy crotalaria. It was a good find for me after along gap.
A common weed in Mysore city. Please upload the habit photo.

Could the learned members of the group help confirm the identity of these flowers growing wild on the banks of the Sukhna lake, Chandigarh, in the current season. (4.3.14)
Any background information on this flower would be welcome.
Crotalaria sp., could be C. retusa but not very sure.
These things should help
1. Fruit totally smooth or hairy?
2. size of flower.
Looks similar to Crotalaria spectabilis Roth (=Crotalaria sericea Retz.).
Yes ... I think the larger ovate bracts point to C. spectabilis. Some lower leaves look rounded at tip, but none seems to be retuse.
Yes, this matches my opinion too... I have also recently got this plant around Morni Hills..
this is common around water bodies.. Crotalaria spectabilis
In response to ... query on the fruit (Fruit totally smooth or hairy?), my response is: the fruit seems more to be on the hair-less side.
Could the learned members also cite some interesting aspects of this plant, that would be of interest to a newspaper reader?
Absolutely right...
Could the learned members guide me as to this aspect of crolataria sp, identified above in the string.
1. Is it true that some butterfly or moth species feed on this herb to take in the "pyrrolidizine alkaloids'' as a measure of defence and sexual selection processes?

Crotalaria retusa :: Hooghly, West Bengal: Sharing images of "Crotalaria retusa". We call it 'ATASI' in Bengali and I found the ID in the book "Plant Groups" (by H. Mukherji, 1981 edition, 2005 reprint)
This plant seems to be Crotalaria spectabilis Roth., as can be identified by foliaceous persitsent stipules, as in ... Sir's post.

:  Butterflies seen flocking to flowers in open area around Asansol (W.B.) 14/11/2010
This is Crotalaria sp.  I have seen these plants in Ovalekar Butterfly garden in Thane. The butterflies do not visit the plants unless the plants leaves are eaten by the caterpillars of a moth.
This could be Crotalaria retusa

Crotalaria spectabilis Roth as per keys in Flora of Pakistan.

Seen this Crotalaria sp. en-route Mullayanagiri (Karnataka).
Date/Time: 25-01-2014 / 11:30AM
Habitat: Wild
Plant Habit: Herb (approx 30 to 40cm)

Could not spot any flowers, only pods..
Seem to be the pods of Crotalaria retusa.
I had seen at Bannerghatta, Bangalore.
I am not sure, perhaps I need to recheck my own upload, which may not be C. retusa L.
Yes i agree with …
Crotalaria spectabilis Roth as per keys in Flora of Pakistan.

¿ Crotalaria retusa ?

I feel it is different.
Thanks … Even I too feel this is some different species, but I am not able to guess.
It could be retusa only,
Thanks very much … My thought of C. retusa is from the appearance of the flower.
The wide bush, and the tender leaves are confusing.
Hope someone helps with comments.
Thanks, … Last image gives a better perspective. Leaf like structures in first two images are bracts.
Inflorescence an erect, terminal raceme, c. 15-30 cm long. Pedicel c. 4-8 mm long. Bract 2-6 mm long; bracteoles 2, c. 1-2 mm long, half way up the pedicel.
However, such bracts are not being seen in efi site at Crotalaria retusa L.
Flora of Pakistan gives the following keys:
8 (7)Bract linear, subulate, 6 mm or less long Crotalaria retusa
+Bract ovate, c. 10 mm or more long Crotalaria spectabilis
So, this should be Crotalaria spectabilis Roth as per images, details and references herein.
Very nicely arrived to ID; many many thanks ... I should have known it. Now that you have made known the ID, it clearly looks C. spectabilis.
The orang-red fading glory of the flower had led me to think of C. retusa.
In wilderness, somehow I had never seen such colouration.
Alamy. I was doubtful from the beginning.

Crotalaria spectabilis in FOI : 8 posts by 3 authors.
Image by Dinesh ji at Crotalaria spectabilis in FOI is of Crotalaria retusa as per keys in Flora of Pakistan as the bracts are linear, subulate and not ovate.
Pl. correct.

Thanks … But I do not think my picture in FoI shows Crotalaria retusa; it must be Crotalaria spectabilis.
Any other species close to these ?
Please let us wait for validating comments.
I can clearly see the linear subulate bracts. So it has to be Crotalaria retusa as per keys in Flora of Pakistan
Pl. see other image in FOI which clearly shows ovate bracts.
Both are regularly confused and I have corrected around 20 threads in efi yesterday.
Also see all the posts in efi site at Crotalaria retusa
Yes, bracts are linear in Dinesh's images - in this one too. The two species are quite close. Meanwhile I have corrected the images on FOI,
Thanks … for scrutinizing this wrong ID.
Thanks ... for pointing to another sighting with wrong labelling.
I will correct my notes in flickr shortly. In due course, I will post all my sightings of Crotalaria that I have labelled as C. spectabilis

I have already corrected you wrong id's posted on efi.
Thanks very much ...
I will go through them, and check whether I have any other sightings inn my collection at flickr.
