the plant was clicked from bangalore during my recent trip (24th August-30th August, 2010).
it was drizzling and the temperature was around 24-25 degree C.
the branches bore a brown felt and the leaves were glabrous.
Flowers reddish in color and the fully opened inflorescence was of the size of a large fist. the flowers were slightly fragrant and pretty fragile.
A Brownea species, native to South America, though I'm not familiar enough with them to give you the correct species. They are all very beautiful (and somewhat similar) in flower. Hopefully someone can provide the correct species.
Brownea coccinea I hope
... going by the species popular in gardens of India (unacceptable approach for ID !!!) , -- Brownea coccinea ... the West Indian mountain rose ... native of West Indies and northern South America.
The Genus is Brownea for sure but it is not B. coccinea. the leaves are much smaller of  this species.
It could be Brownia grandiceps.
In Choudhry's book on tropical garden plants (?) the various species of B. are given very clearly.  My personal view is that It is very difficult to provide identification based on photographs, which are  often deceptive
It may be checked in the light of the following link:
Tropical Planting and Gardening with Sepcial Reference to Ceylon By H. F. Macmillan (1935- Description with differences- Cultivated in Sri Lanka- Brownea ariza Benth., Brownea coccinea, Brownea × crawfordii S.Watson, Brownea grandiceps Jacq., Brownea macrophylla)
it looks like
Brownea ariza, Hermesias ariza----the leaves are smaller hence.

For validation please.
uh oh
the new leaves are infected or damaged poor tree
leaves look like it
It seems to be Brownea ariza. Flowers could have helped in proper identification. Attaching images of flower and flower bud of the species taken recently at a park. Attachments (2)
For me the ID seems to be correct.
