Bauhinia variegata

Keys at HYBRID ORIGIN OF BAUHINIA BLAKEANA (pdf)

Bauhinia x blakeana has three large stamens (with two smaller ones) unlike five long stamens of Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata). Leaves are also not over-lapping near cleft in Bauhinia x blakeana unlike in Kachnar.

Good catch indeed. Now it is easy to remember the broader petals of these flowers apart from other characters like stamens and variegated nature to compare with B.purpurea

One thing I noticed here is the number of stamens. I can clearly count 8 anthers so the stamens must be 10 or so may be. Will have to check the references......
Really interesting
7-8 stamens are seen in the first photograph, where incidently the associated leaves don't appear to be Bauhinia
Second photograph with clear Bauhinia leaves has five stamens.
Perhaps ... can explain better.
..., the associated leaves are in the background ... they belong to different plant.
This is because the branch was stretched to a suitable position.
All these photos belong to the same plant.
The original photos are cropped and attached.
The count of stamens:
3128061459_460bd05c3e_o_CROPPED.jpg ... ... 8
3128069191_19626c0e3e_o_CROPPED_1.jpg ... 7
3128069191_19626c0e3e_o_CROPPED_2.jpg ... 6
Worth exploring further
Could not find any source where a species of Bauhinia has 6-8 fertile stamens
Bauhinia blakeana has 6-8 fertile (total stamens 9-10) stamens kindly see from the link below.
http://eol.org/pages/641500/overview
I had gone through this already. It is confusing as it write Fertile stamens 6-8, Fertile stamens 5 (I think it should be stamens 6-8, fertile stamens 5).
Bauhinia blakeana is a sterile hybrid, and known trees in the world are clones of a single hybrid tree developed in Honkong, so we can't expect white variant in this species.
Was not able to find any description of Bauhinia variegata var. candida which mentions about its number of staminodes.
There are quite a few sites which show this flower ditto, though with varying number of staminodes (as less as 5 to as much as 8 found in my photo).
The white toned petals and the lemon green textured fill on the large petal convinces me it to be Bauhinia variegata var. candida.

Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae (Caesalpiniaceae)- Bauhinia variegata_color range: I may have posted these before, but here are a few shots showing some of the color range of B. variegata from trees in West Hollywood, California, USA.

... would the red one be a cultivar ? ... Never have seen this deep red.
The white, I believe is var. candida.
It's been called var. rubra, but I don't know if that name has scientific standing or not.

121211 Bauhinia acuminata from Coimbatore:
Pl. validate the species photos attached herewith. Is it Bauhinia acuminata? or any other sp.
Location: Padmavathi Ammal School, Coimbatore
Date: 10.12.2011
Habitat: Garden
Habit: tree.
Yes ...
I don't think this to be Bauhinia acuminata
Bauhinia acuminata: The petals are fairly equal having a close to radial symmetry with 10 stamens. Also the leaflets are with acute tips.
This may be B.variegata var. alba or some other species. as it has 5 stamens.
Yes, since it has white flowers and 5 stamens, I think it is Bauhinia variegata var. alba or var. candida

Hooghly Today : Bauhinia variegata L.: (4 images)
A medium sized deciduous tree.
ID Help : https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a---l/f/fabaceae/bauhinia/bauhinia-variegata
Here in Uttarakhand B.variegata has almost white flowers with only one petal with purple streaks. Attaching close up of a flower!
I copy a part of the description of B. variegata from "Flora Indica" - "...... This tree can only be said to differ from B. candida in the colour of flowers; had I met with this first, I should certainly have considered the other as a variety only."
Thank you very much for the beautiful flowers. According to the "Flora of British India" this tree can have red and yellow or pure white flowers also.
I thought your plant is B. blakeana
Look for any fruits to if present. B. blakeana does not produce fruits.
Supporting ...
Yes I agree ... To differentiate it from B.xblakeana (a sterile hybrid of B.variegata and B.purpurea) I am attaching a close up of the flower of B.xblakeana.
It is possible that this plant may well be B. blakeana.
I remember our discussion in my earlier upload of another Bauhinia tree -  which was related to yet another post at.
While i was taking pictures of this particular tree i checked for pods and there wasn't any.
But, at the same time i recalled that last year i had a very similar experience, initially there was no pods and later the tree was full of pods.
I used the KEY (for B. variegata L), "flowers appearing generally before leaves" or "flowers 10-12 cm across, after leaves fall", to identify this tree. The KEY was prepared by you in -
However, i shot this plant in Chandannagar and will check again when i go there in near future.
Checked the tree again, today, and found pods on it. Attaching the photographs.
Yes ... That confirms B. variegata. Further B. blakeana generally flowers in November December with leaves on. In variegata the flowers generally appear in January-March before leaves, B. purpurea in late summer along with leaves. That is the situation in Delhi.
Thank you Sir for confirming one more time. I will be adding the key link in my list, shortly.
Looking forward to see a B. blakeana here, in our region.

Bauhinia spp. id?: A Bauhinia shrub from Cubbon Park, Bangalore. The flower had a delightful, lovely fragrance. id please
This one seems to be of Bauhinia variegata L. Some consider it as a var. candida under B. variegata because of its pure white flowers.
B. variegata, can count stamens to be 5.

Habit: Medium sized tree.
Habitat: Cultivated.
Sighting: Bidarammanagudi, Tumkur, Karnataka, about 800 msl
Date: 11-01-2015 and 01-11-2015
all bauhnia cases very nice. very diligent work with follow up pictures too. I appreciate them
now we need them all in one page like ... says
I would add that it would be nice to get The tree pic of each and trunk bark
that would complete the set and oh by the way in fruits ere available in all ..then them
The Flowers of India Site recognizes a separate variety "candida" in the species Bauhinia variegata. Kindly examine
Thanks, ... There are varying opinions as per
May I request ... to give his final word.
Thank you for your mail.
The colour of the flowers in Bauhinia variegata L. varies from pure milk white to reddish purple with many intermediate colours. That is why I do not prefer to give any separate taxonomic status
to the plants with white flowers. However, one can do so but I personally think that instead of 'variety' this trivial variation can be recognized as 'forma'.
Similar variation in the colour of the flowers can also be seen in Bauhinia purpurea L.
Thanks ... for your valuable opinion

Height 15 mts approx
Bauhinia variegata, I hope
Saw lot of them flowering on Nainital trip.
I am sure the mountain sides of Nainital would have been colored with these flowers as here...
Yes, Bauhinia variegata, I was also able to this a few days back , these are my shoots...from Panipat April 2012
So.... it is found even in Panipat... and I thought it was a mountain flower...

Different Bauhinias for further id. pl
1&2 flower and  it`s tree
5&6 flower and it`s tree.
All look like B. variegata, except #0797, which is B. x blakeana.

P2200790.JPG ... Bauhinia variegata
P2210797.JPG ... Bauhinia x blakeana
P2280852.JPG ... Bauhinia variegata
P2140693.JPG ... Bauhinia variegata var. candida
P2140692.JPG ... Bauhinia variegata var. candida
P3110910.JPG ... Bauhinia variegata
P2140693 I thought is Bauhinia alba
P2210797, I thought is Bauhinia purpurea
I may be wrong...
P2140693 ... Bauhinia alba as well as B. variegata var. candida are now synonyms of B. variegata ... http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?6602
P2210797 ... certainly not B. purpurea, whose petals are more slender, and has only 3 stamens.
Am justifying my thoughts, could be wrong.

... got them all right except that it is more appropriately cv. Candida or B. variegata 'Candida'
I again have one VERY SIMPLE question as usual:
Which alba are you talking of:
Bauhinia alba Hort. (this is a cultivar not a species) OR Bauhinia alba Buch.-Ham. ex Wall.
For your information, there is a species called Bauhinia alba and then there is a cultivated variety called Bauhinia variegata 'Alba'. When following any plant name from GRIN full name is to be checked.
As far as I can make out GRIN is talking about the cultivated variety so please do not misinterpret the information.
I assume more than 80% of people here are not taxonomists so its not a big deal as they tend to miss the technical details of it.
Though I may be wrong!!

and yes, you were 100% correct about B. purpurea and my apologies for the wrong id. They can also be differentiated on the basis of the foliar structure.
... was not aware that there are two avatars of Bauhinia alba !!!
Referred to link of NPGS / GRIN ... it states Bauhinia alba Hort. as synonym of B. variegata.
Many thanks for making me aware that the syntax is not necessarily followed.
Hort. is not author citation there, it is pointing towards may be horticultural variety, in other words, cultivars.
According to GRIN B. alba Hort is synonym of B. variegata (GRIN does not talk about cultivars)
According to Hortus Third B. alba Buch.-Ham. (as also B. candida Ait.) are synonyms of B. variegata cv. Candida.
On GRIN website, there is one option at the end of the webpage
Abbreviations & symbols in GRIN Taxonomy In this GRIN writes, 'hort.' as "hortulanorum (Latin): of gardeners, signifying that the name was first used in gardens and was later
published without the name of its originator."
Can you please tell me if it relates with cultivated varieties or not.
Because I still have doubts about the synonymy of this species.
Bauhinia alba Buch.-Ham. should be a distinct species. Why will GRIN not use a proper author citation and write B. alba as B. alba hort..
They cant make such silly mistakes.

One of them Bauhinia blakeana, 2 of them are B. alba and the remaining seems to be varigata.
Other sources which treat B. alba Buch.-Ham. ex Wall. (or simply B. alba) as synonym of B. variegata var. candida
The discussion is too technical for me to appreciate. However I DO appreciate the beauty of the flowers.
Where in India do they flower so very profusely?
I thought our B. blakeana had put on a good show but these have surpassed the poor Chennai specimen, being fully covered with only flowers.

yes from me too
Yes, B.variegata ....... I too saw them at Karla and at Tungi near Lonavala, MH in last week of March this year.

Attaching seedpod images of the same tree that i uploaded sometimes in January this year - https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/indiantreepix/bauhinia$20x$20blakeana/indiantreepix/2fer1UHmLTI/X2wqPw3W38kJ
Species : Bauhinia x blakeana
Habit & Habitat : garden tree
Date : 01-04-2012 & 12-04-2012
Place : Nalikul (Hooghly), WB
As far as I know Bauhinia x blakeana is a hybrid propagated vegetatively. It does not set seeds.
Your tree must be some thing different.
Sir,
Thank you for drawing my attention to the fact that B. blakeana is a sterile plant. I also read, in January, about the sterile flowers of B. blakeana in wikipedia and other websites.
But there is a discussion at - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53664/ where someone claims that it bears seedpod. Again there is an image claiming to be seedpod of the same plant - http://www.hear.org/starr/images/image/?q=030702-0067&o=plants
So, if it is not the B. x blakeana then my earlier post (https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/indiantreepix/bauhinia$20x$20blakeana/indiantreepix/2fer1UHmLTI/X2wqPw3W38kJ) should also be some other species, might be B. variegata.
Such reports often appear but one is not sure whether the person is talking about the real B. x blakeana or some cultivar of B. variegata which also has larger flowers with five stamens and broader petals, and does show variation in colour.
