Good catch indeed. Now it is easy to remember the broader petals of these flowers apart from other characters like stamens and variegated nature to compare with B.purpurea

One thing I noticed here is the number of stamens. I can clearly count 8 anthers so the stamens must be 10 or so may be. Will have to check the references......
Really interesting
7-8 stamens are seen in the first photograph, where incidently the associated leaves don't appear to be Bauhinia
Second photograph with clear Bauhinia leaves has five stamens.
Perhaps ... can explain better.
..., the associated leaves are in the background ... they belong to different plant.
This is because the branch was stretched to a suitable position.
All these photos belong to the same plant.
The original photos are cropped and attached.
The count of stamens:
3128061459_460bd05c3e_o_CROPPED.jpg ... ... 8
3128069191_19626c0e3e_o_CROPPED_1.jpg ... 7
3128069191_19626c0e3e_o_CROPPED_2.jpg ... 6
Worth exploring further
Could not find any source where a species of Bauhinia has 6-8 fertile stamens
Bauhinia blakeana has 6-8 fertile (total stamens 9-10) stamens kindly see from the link below.
http://eol.org/pages/641500/overview
I had gone through this already. It is confusing as it write Fertile stamens 6-8, Fertile stamens 5 (I think it should be stamens 6-8, fertile stamens 5).
Bauhinia blakeana is a sterile hybrid, and known trees in the world are clones of a single hybrid tree developed in Honkong, so we can't expect white variant in this species.
Was not able to find any description of Bauhinia variegata var. candida which mentions about its number of staminodes.
There are quite a few sites which show this flower ditto, though with varying number of staminodes (as less as 5 to as much as 8 found in my photo).
The white toned petals and the lemon green textured fill on the large petal convinces me it to be Bauhinia variegata var. candida.

Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae (Caesalpiniaceae)- Bauhinia variegata_color range: I may have posted these before, but here are a few shots showing some of the color range of B. variegata from trees in West Hollywood, California, USA.

... would the red one be a cultivar ? ... Never have seen this deep red.
The white, I believe is var. candida.
It's been called var. rubra, but I don't know if that name has scientific standing or not.

121211 Bauhinia acuminata from Coimbatore:
Pl. validate the species photos attached herewith. Is it Bauhinia acuminata? or any other sp.
Location: Padmavathi Ammal School, Coimbatore
Date: 10.12.2011
Habitat: Garden
Habit: tree.
Yes ...
I don't think this to be Bauhinia acuminata
Bauhinia acuminata: The petals are fairly equal having a close to radial symmetry with 10 stamens. Also the leaflets are with acute tips.
This may be B.variegata var. alba or some other species. as it has 5 stamens.
Yes, since it has white flowers and 5 stamens, I think it is Bauhinia variegata var. alba or var. candida

Trees of Lalbagh, Bangalore - Bauhinia x blakeana - Hong Kong Orchid Tree (Please Confirm):
Pl. check as this plant does not set seed being sterile.
It's true that this tree is sterile but very rarely I have observed one or two fruit being produced.
Is this the same Bauhinia which has a name plate as ' Bauhinia krugii urban in Lalbagh I have posted earlier?
Kindly confirm.
Bauhinia krugii is a synonym of B. monandra.
Although the flowers look similar the leaves appear quite different. It is a distinct species from the one discussed here.
Thank you for your reply and feedback.
I think my pictures are also of the same tree in Lalbagh that is discussed here.
I will resurface my post for you to see.
Some relevant feedback from another thread:

"I too think the tree label is wrong as 3 long and 2 short stamens are clearly seen. All features point to B. x blakeana, but I think the pod shown by ... in another thread needs to be closely checked. The pod does not look like any of the two parental species or other species of Bauhinia. It may well belong to another tree, or perhaps a climber.

Is that pinkish colour of the petioles and the pink tinge of the new leaf normally a feature of B.x blakeana?
I have never seen this.
This tree has been bothering us for a long time. Assuming that pod belongs to this tree only, we have to completely reject the possibility of B. x blakeana. (you will find a lot of reports of pods on the net, but all cases of misidentification). Let us see the alternatives keeping this table in mind.
http://www.amjbot.org/content/92/3/525/T2.large.jpg
B. purpurea has only 3 fertile stamens, petals (more so upper petal) are much narrower and quite separated. This should exclude this also.
While comparing this photograph with mine (of B. x blakeana) I was curious about the width of upper petal, more in above pplant. While checking stamens closely I noticed that of the five stamens (in above plant, mine, as well as below link of B. variegata), three of the stamens a slightly longer with thicker pinkish filaments, two slightly shorter with thinner whitish filaments. Also the width of petals (especially upper overlapped petal) leads me to suggest that this tree may a darker coloured form of B. variegata only
But then perhaps flowering period has also to be explored. In Delhi B. x blakeana flowers from middle of November to about middle of December, B. purpurea flowers in September-October and B. variegata in February-March. The pattern in above garden may be kept in mind.
I was wondering, if anybody anywhere hasn't been studying bauhinia for indepth study, for genetic analysis etc? May be we can get an input from them??
May be this plant is indeed a cutting from B. x Blakeana but has asserted a slightly different genetic codes or have a local environ based change in its behavior expression ...like reverting back to one of the parents' character as in flower size, petal size etc?
intriguing case study
As far as I can understand, a hybrid between two different species at the same ploidy level as parents would be sterile. It may produce flowers but due to problems of pairing (it has one genome each from each parent) no proper gametes would be formed and hence no proper pod formation. The only way it could be a sexual fertile species is immediate duplication of chromosomes after hybridization as in wheat or Tragopogon kashmirianus (I had described in 1976). I have never heard about production of pods in this species of Bauhinia.
Lalbagh always have surprises, as I find something new every time I go there.
But I haven't seen a Bauhinia Tree which doesn't have pods.
Every one of them have pods and plenty of them.
I have been taking care of 5 Bauhinia x blakeana trees and watching them through all the seasons for the last 20 years.
They normally don't produce any pods. Once only in all that time about 5 years ago I did see one of the trees with 2 or 3 seed pods.
Sometimes nature surprises us all.
This is what I was getting at perahps...
intriguing and worth noting... and may be worth checking its ploidy?
To me it defies scientific logic to find mature fruits on B. x blakeana. It would be worthwhile to check whether this is really B. x blakeana. I am reproducing the key given earlier in another thread.

I fully agree with ... and compliment his great efforts in providing detailed info. with keys etc.not only for this plant but also for all the postings whenever such doubts arise. Oh! it is great.
Plants and trees mutate like crazy, just like tumors is the lesson here, and they surprise the heck out of the experts, just when one thinks one has a handle on some damn tumor, something new turns up...
same story operates here I guess.

Bauhinia krugii Urban : ID Confirmation : Lalbagh,Bangalore : 020812 : AK-1: Pictures taken in Lalbagh,Bangalore on 24/7/12.
Flower dark purple in color.
Sorry for the bad quality pictures due to cloudy weather.
Kindly validate.
For me the ID on the name board seems to be correct. It is Bauhinia monandra. Bauhinia krugii is the synonym of Bauhinia monandra
Resurfacing my post as the tree under discussion seems to be the same.
... to me this flower looks very much like the Hong Kong orchid, Bauhinia blakeana.
Have not yet seen Bauhinia monandra - the name suggests Bauhinia bearing one stamen ... though not sure monandra in this context implies one fertile and some infertile.
... photos at:
http://www.virboga.de/Bauhinia_monandra.htm
http://www.somemagneticislandplants.com.au/index.php/plants/449-bauhinia-monandra ... good description here.
I agree the flower looks like B. x blakeana, but I have never seen leaves like those in the pictures on that species. That pinkish tinge and the way the new leaves are folded is not seen in B x blakeana. That tree's new foliage is always a lightish green. Veins also look more prominent in your pics. IT is not easy to make a definite judgement based only on these images.
I think there should be little difficulty in getting correct identity if ... remembers major aspects of the plant. Leaves are very small in B. krugii
Bauhinia monandra (syn: B. krugii)             Bauhinia x blakeana
1. Leaves 2.5-4 cm long.                           1. Leaves 9-13 cm long
2. Flowers in a short raceme.                     2. Flowers in a large panicle
3. Fertile stamen 1.                                   3. Fertile stamens 5, 3 longer.
4. Pod formed.                                          4. No pod formed
5. Flowers pink with purple veins.             5. Flowers with purplish petals.
6. Petals barely 3 cm long.                        6. Petals 5-8 cm long.
Thanks ... i for the summary.
The ones in Lalbagh have lots of pods.
Atleast I know two of them one near the rose garden, another near the palms
I have the pictures of both of the trees in this link. I have also uploaded in the group

Thanks a lot for the distinguishing features between the two.
Both the set of pictures posted by ... are of the same tree photographed by me.
This is near the palms, a small tree with two main trunks.
Leaves are definitely not small, but large.
Flowers very dark with purple petals.
Only confusing factor is the pods. Although I haven't seen any, ... photographs have pod formation.
You can see the pinkish tinge on the new leaves.
Even ... has posted the same flower earlier.
Although the flowering season was over when I took the pictures, the single dark flower caught my attention. Had not come across a Bauhinia so dark pink, almost purple.
If the tree really bears mature pods, it can't be B. x blakeana, which being a hybrid does not set seeds/pods,
One has to check the number of fertile stamens and leaf size to confirm.
I don't think it is B.monandra as B. monandra clearly has only one big single visible stamen. Others may be small or rudimentary. Here I can see many and all appear equal in size.
I too think the tree label is wrong as 3 long and 2 short stamens are clearly seen. All features point to B. x blakeana, but I think the pod shown by ... in another thread needs to be closely checked. The pod does not look like any of the two parental species or other species of Bauhinia. It may well belong to another tree, or perhaps a climber.
If this tree is same as one uploaded by Raman ji, then perhaps comments in the other thread have to be kept in mind.
Taking it as Bauhinia variegata as per another thread

Hooghly Today : Bauhinia variegata L.: (4 images)
A medium sized deciduous tree.
ID Help : https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a---l/f/fabaceae/bauhinia/bauhinia-variegata
Here in Uttarakhand B.variegata has almost white flowers with only one petal with purple streaks. Attaching close up of a flower!
I copy a part of the description of B. variegata from "Flora Indica" - "...... This tree can only be said to differ from B. candida in the colour of flowers; had I met with this first, I should certainly have considered the other as a variety only."
Thank you very much for the beautiful flowers. According to the "Flora of British India" this tree can have red and yellow or pure white flowers also.
I thought your plant is B. blakeana
Look for any fruits to if present. B. blakeana does not produce fruits.
Supporting ...
Yes I agree ... To differentiate it from B.xblakeana (a sterile hybrid of B.variegata and B.purpurea) I am attaching a close up of the flower of B.xblakeana.
It is possible that this plant may well be B. blakeana.
I remember our discussion in my earlier upload of another Bauhinia tree -  which was related to yet another post at.
While i was taking pictures of this particular tree i checked for pods and there wasn't any.
But, at the same time i recalled that last year i had a very similar experience, initially there was no pods and later the tree was full of pods.
I used the KEY (for B. variegata L), "flowers appearing generally before leaves" or "flowers 10-12 cm across, after leaves fall", to identify this tree. The KEY was prepared by you in -
However, i shot this plant in Chandannagar and will check again when i go there in near future.
Checked the tree again, today, and found pods on it. Attaching the photographs.
Yes ... That confirms B. variegata. Further B. blakeana generally flowers in November December with leaves on. In variegata the flowers generally appear in January-March before leaves, B. purpurea in late summer along with leaves. That is the situation in Delhi.
Thank you Sir for confirming one more time. I will be adding the key link in my list, shortly.
Looking forward to see a B. blakeana here, in our region.

Bauhinia spp. id?: A Bauhinia shrub from Cubbon Park, Bangalore. The flower had a delightful, lovely fragrance. id please
This one seems to be of Bauhinia variegata L. Some consider it as a var. candida under B. variegata because of its pure white flowers.
B. variegata, can count stamens to be 5.

It is my pleasure to share few images of Bauhinia variegata var.candida (Fabaceae)
Habit: Medium sized tree.
Habitat: Cultivated.
Sighting: Bidarammanagudi, Tumkur, Karnataka, about 800 msl
Date: 11-01-2015 and 01-11-2015
all bauhnia cases very nice. very diligent work with follow up pictures too. I appreciate them
now we need them all in one page like ... says
I would add that it would be nice to get The tree pic of each and trunk bark
that would complete the set and oh by the way in fruits ere available in all ..then them
The Flowers of India Site recognizes a separate variety "candida" in the species Bauhinia variegata. Kindly examine
Thanks, ... There are varying opinions as per
May I request ... to give his final word.
Thank you for your mail.
The colour of the flowers in Bauhinia variegata L. varies from pure milk white to reddish purple with many intermediate colours. That is why I do not prefer to give any separate taxonomic status
to the plants with white flowers. However, one can do so but I personally think that instead of 'variety' this trivial variation can be recognized as 'forma'.
Similar variation in the colour of the flowers can also be seen in Bauhinia purpurea L.
Thanks ... for your valuable opinion

Bauhinia x blakeana :: Hooghly, West Bengal:  Yesterday, I have had a short chat with ... (in the 'facebook' group 'Indian Flora') over the identification of this Bauhinia sp. He identified it as *Bauhinia x blakeana* or the 'Hong Kong Orchid Tree'. ... also provided me links (given below) of the two earlier 'efloraofindia' posts where ... and ... discussed the identity of this plant.

Feedback from another thread:

"Thank you for drawing my attention to the fact that B. blakeana is a sterile plant. I also read, in January, about the sterile flowers of B. blakeana in wikipedia and other websites.
But there is a discussion at - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53664/ where someone claims that it bears seedpod. Again there is an image claiming to be seedpod of the same plant - http://www.hear.org/starr/images/image/?q=030702-0067&o=plants
So, if it is not the B. x blakeana then my earlier post should also be some other species, might be B. variegata."
I think now that this is NOT Bauhinia blakeana. Because, later i witnessed seedpod growing on this tree and i uploaded the same in another post. I confirm hereby that images from both of my posts were recorded from the same tree.
