Mallotus philippensis

dyer's rottlera, kamala dye tree, monkey face tree, orange kamala, red kamala, scarlet croton • Bengali: কমলা kamala • Hindi: कामला kamala, रैनी raini, रोहन rohan, रोहिनी rohini, सिन्धुरी sinduri • Kannada: ಕುಮ್ಕುಮದ ಮರ kunkuma-damara • Malayalam: ചെങ്കൊല്ലി cenkolli, കുങ്കുമപ്പൂമരം kunkumappuumaram, കുരങ്ങുമഞ്ഞശ് kurangumanjas, നാവട്ട naavatta, നൂറിമരം nuurimaram • Marathi: कपिला kapila, केशरी kesari, शेंदरी shendri • Sanskrit: काम्पिल्यक kampilyaka • Tamil: கபிலப்பொடி kapila poti, குரங்குமஞ்சணாறி kuranku-mañcanari • Telugu:కుంకుమ చెట్టు kunkuma-chettu;

The fruit is three-lobbed and is covered with a fine felt of red glands on the surface. These are collected and a powder known as Kamala extensively used for dyeing silk is prepared.
Its dye is supplanted by newer synthetic dyes... the red "granular" substance on the seed covers is supposed to have been a dye used to color natural fibres...
Bark is much liked by Elephants.

Glochidion heyneanum (Wight & Arn.) Wight
syn: G. velutinum Wight
A shrub or tree with tomentose branches and undersurface of leaves; leaves on 3-4 mm long petiole; Flowers in axillary clusters; male flowers with 2-6 mm long pedicel, 6 sepals in two whorls, pubescent; 3 connate stamens; female flower on 1 mm long pedicel; style column shorter than ovary; capsules depressed globose, 4-7-locular.
Photographed from Kud in J & K

Whether the leaves were tomentose particularly on the undersurface. If so, then it is an excellent shot.

... here are the cropped close ups to show undersurface of leaves.
Glochidion heyneanum Sir.
This is not Glochidion heyneanum.
It is Mallotus philippinensis, as fruits are trilobate covered with removable reddish powder unlike G.heyneanum where seeds have shiny red colour and have 8- 14 lobes, leaves are also different from Glochidion heyneanum in newly appearing leaves we can see light pink colour shade which occurs in Mallotus philippinensis.
Which one?
..., its an old post by ... in 2013, Please check it on the efloraofindia page on Glochidion heyneanum.
This appears to be a Mallotus. I will check.
= Mallotus philippensis.
To me also it appears to be Mallotus philippensis

Mallotus philippensis Muelt.-Arg. Fruiting: Thought of sharing the winter fruiting and flowering seen today at the South end of the national park in Mumbai. Here's the evergreen Mallotus philippensis in beautiful fruiting. According to ' Trees of Mumbai', the colouring matter or a red dye, which is present in the glandular pubescence of ripe fruits is availble in Feb. and March.

Plant for ID SMP1 15/1/2011: A large tree seen in Panhala near Kolhapur. Compound raceme inflorescences were observed. Leaves and flowers are seen in the pictures.
- Adding some more images of hopefully the same species but from another nearby tree.
- Yes Mallotus phillipinensis..Kunku phal in Marathi
- Also locally called Sindhuri from the Vermillion coloured powder on fruits.
- All the photos are of large trees and in a similar habitat near the so called botanical park of Panhala. The last ones with a picture of Iora are from the hotel premises.
To my knowledge the Colebrookea sp. is a shrub and not a tree. I agree that the flowers have similarity. I think the trees posted by me are in various stages of flowering and fruiting.
- The first set of pictures show a male plant of Mallotus philippensis and the second set shows female flowers with 3 styles clearly leaving no doubt for ID.
- The photo MG_9501s.jpg is Colebrookea oppositifolia and all other photo belong to Mallotus philippensis (1st one (MG_9497s.jpg) looks to be male and others are female)

FREE LUNCH: 1 correct image.
At this time of the year you can see numberof butterflies on different flowers and number of birds on flowers/fruits. Lunch is available free, one will have to search. Bluethroated Barbet is on Bullock's Heart fruit (Annona Reticulata). Treepie is on Kumkum Tree or Kamala Tree ( Mallotus Philippensis ). This is what Dr Venkatesh Says about the fruit of this tree,"The fuit is three-lobbed and is covered with a fine felt of red glands on the surface. These are collected and a powder known as Kamala extensively used for dyeing silk is prepared." If the tree is available in your locality, please rub the fruits and you will find orange colour on your hands. Common Rose butterfly is on Clerodendron and Leucas. The world is beautiful.

04012013GS1: Euphorbiaceae Tree from Kud, J & K:  Please help in the ID of this small tree, about 12 feet tall, photographed along roadsides in Kud, J & K, alt. about 1200 m, in May, 2012. A member of Euphorbiaceae.
This is Mallotus philippensis, I think.
thanks ... I had seen the tree earlier in Pachmari some 30 years back, and somehow remembered only the long inflorescence.
Another one of the trees which is fallen off the favorite list...
its dye is supplanted by newer synthetic dyes...
the red "granular" substance on the seed covers is supposed to have been a dye used to color natural fibres...

I do not see it in any catalogues of natural dyes..
look forward to seeing the flowers one of these days

malltus philippensis in the months of may and june.
it was still fruiting in may with stunning red fruits and in june after the rains pink leaves appeared
it is one of the commoner plants in the foothills
Not only the fruits but young leaves too have fine colour.
It is common here in Uttarakhand. Bark is much liked by Elephants.
A little correction- it is Mallotus philippensis (Lam.) Mull. Arg. [Euphorbiaceae).

Euphorbiaceae Fortnight : Mallotus philippensis, (Lam.) Muell. Arg. <=> Kamala Tree - Bangalore - RA : Attachments (10).  3 posts by 2 authors.
Kamala Tree (pronounced kaamlaa) is a tree found throughout India.
It has been in use as medicinal tree in India for ages.
The tree can grow up to 10 m tall.
Alternately arranged, ovate or rhombic ovate leaves are rusty-velvety. Male and female flowers occur in different trees. Female flowers are borne in lax spike like racemes at the end of branches or in leaf axils. Male flowers occur three together in the axils of small bracts. Capsule is trigonous-globular, covered with a bright crimson layer of minute, easily detachable reddish powder.
Kamala is supposed to be a very useful tree. It is source of Kamala dye which is used in colouring silk and wool. It is used as anti-oxidant for ghee and vegetable oils. Oil is used as hair-fixer and added in ointment. Seed oil is used in paints and varnishes. Seed cake is used as manure.

Seen this small tree at Toranmal (Dist. Nandurbar, Maharashtra). Looks like some Mallotus sp. (Family: Euphorbiaceae).
Date/Time: 16-08-2014 / 03:40PM
Tree was around 4 m in height.
Yes it is Mallotus philippensis
It is most likely Mallotus philippensis
I have sometimes seen this bushy compact habit in exposed locations. The leaves are beaten about by the wind and lose their more recognisable shape and texture.
not many species are there of Mallotus in Maharashtra. could be M. phillipensis.

Yes, Mallotus philippensis.

Tree for id:  These are the fruits and leaves of a medium height tree common in Kanha and other forests of MP; This one was taken from Samardha forest today. Fruit capsules leave orange pigment on rubbing and one of the local names is 'roli' tree but this is definitely not 'sinduri' or 'bixa orellana.'
Mallotus phillipensis (Euphorbiaceae) to me too. Common in Haryana Siwaliks.

Check for Mallotus philippensis..
Thank you ... I had suspected it to be Kamala (Trees of Delhi, p121) too, but hadn't seen a close up of its fruit before.

I believe this to be the male Mallotus philippensis. But then, I could be completely wrong as the leaf shapes do not match (Salix sp.?). I had posted the female tree with red berries on 21 December (the first picture–new for comparison).
Kamala Tree (Mallotus philippensis)–Please advise.
Dharamshala, HP
11 January 2015
The first picture of tree with fruits is of Mallotus philippensis.
All the other pictures of shrubs with flowers are of Colebrookia oppositifolia, I hope.
Yes, I too agree with ...
Yes, I also agree the both ID suggested by ...
Thank you ... for correcting me. I was completely off the mark, as I had suspected. And thanks to ... for confirmation too.
The first photograph is of  Mallotus philippinensis.  Remember to spell it correctly. All the above quoted spells are wrong. Other photos are of Colebrookia oppositifolia- an aromatic shrub under Lamiaceae /Labiatae.
Thank you ... for the correction. I assumed that the spellings given in Flowers of India website and the Trees of Delhi book by Pradip Krishen were the correct ones. Both these sources spell it as Mallotus philippensis and so does this article on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallotus_philippensis
I had made similar mistake in posting Mallotus philippinensis and Colebrookia oppositifolia as a same plant.
Both were recorded at same spot in Panhala near Kolhapur in Maharashtra at same time earlier.
... your point is noted as well that of ... efi thread
To be correct it should be spelt as Mallotus philippinensis and not as M.philippensis. I as a professor while teaching Dendrology (Taxonomy of woody plants),
I used to make the erring students repeat the spelling 10 times, so that they may not commit the same mistake in exams and lose marks.
Please check the following links for updated and correct spelling.
IPNI (see the 'remarks')
There are several such instances of orthographic variations in botanical names found in various regional publications. Hopefully these variations are standardized now, thanks to the global online databases with great accuracy in nomenclature. Published old floras, however, still carry these errors.
The old floras spell the names correctle, but it is the made race for publication by copying from anywhere and publishibg floras by sitting in libraries and w\ithout verifying/confirming the updated Nomenclature from publications like Index Kewensis.
Kindly refer to the following literature:
Mallotus philippensis (Lam.) Müll.Arg. in Linnaea 34: 196. 1865 & in DC., Prodr. 15(2): 980. 1866 (as philippinensis); Hook.f., Fl. Brit. India 5: 442. 1887 (as philippinensis).  Croton philippensis Lam., Encycl. 2: 206. 1786 (as philippense).
As per the ICBN, the original spelling of a taxon must be retained.  Hence we have to maintain the spelling "philippensis" here and not "philippinensis".  Lamarck treated the gender of the genus as neuter, but now the gender of Mallotus is adopted and accepted to be masculine.
I hope that the above point clarifies the spelling of the species.
I photographed a tree at about 800m altitude yesterday where the red pouch like fruits were open showing the black seeds underneath. I suspect it to be the handiwork of some birds.
birds or the natural drying  of the capsule that then burst open and would release the seeds
First Mallotus phillipensis with fruits
Second Colebrookia oppositifolia
Thank you ... They could of course be opening up as you suggested, .., and dropping the seeds in that manner. I will try and find out more.
The fruits are explosively dehiscent.
