VOF Week: Tree for ID from Trek:  This tree was found along river bank during back trek from Ghanghariya
to Gobind Ghat.
Hope to get id....

... the leaves and its arrangement makes me wonder if it is related to Homonoia riparia.
Fruits looks like that of Elaeagnus species
Fruits and leaves looks like that of Elaeagnus parvifolia
I think not Elaeagnus parvifolia. Let us wait.
This is Hippophae salicifolia (Elaeagnaceae)
Thanks a lot ....yes this looks to be same
No wonder I was thinking in the direction of Salix species due to Salix like leaves. The fruits differ though.
Good identification ...! The difference between this and Elaeagnus rhamnoides is quite subtle
http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Leh%20Berry.html
The prominent mid-rib of the leaves here distinguishes it from Elaeagnus rhamnoides
somebody tell me... is the name salicifolia because it looks like a willow ??? or do the leaves contain
salicylic acid???

Yes the name salicifolila is perhaps derived from its leaves bearing resemblance with that of willow...

Hippophae salicifolia - at Shakati - GHNP - PKA8 : 4 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (7).
Small tree (5 to 6m tall) seen near Sainj River at Shakati (Altitude: approx 2300m) at GHNP.
Bot. name: Hippophae salicifolia
Family: Elaeagnaceae
Yes a very important medicinal plant. Sea buck Thorn. Fruits, though small, are one of the richest source of Vit C and antioxidants. Fruits do not seem completely mature (though these never become sweeter) and a fruit in mouth can sour the taste. When fully, mature turns orange and looks delicious. Commercial drinks are being prepared from the fruits now.
Is it? where can we buy the sea buck thorn juice in india nowaday, ..., I would certainly like it.
Back in 2003 and 2004 all army camp wives were swearing by this juice. I loved it when tasted with them, but now a days in gangetic planes we dont see it in any market.
..., very nice pictures of one of the four Sea buck thorns, is this the predominant type in Ladhakh?
