Are't the leaves looks like Garcinia? There is a synonym for this plant as Garcinia malabarica Desr. in Lam., Encycl. 3: 701.1792 (ref. Sasidharan 2004)! This is Diospyros malabarica. In my childhood I have eatten ripe fruit of this tree. Sweet but not very tasty. Pulped fruit of this tree is used as preservative for fishing nets (ofcoure before the invesion of polymers). In Tamil it is written as "Tamala maram" the Krishna's favourite tree. It is a tree planted in front of a temple (Purandhara temple a Vaishanavaite's temple) in a town near Tirunelveli. Here in Mysore I consulted an expert taxonomist, who confirmed that the tree is Garcinia xanthochymus only. I also checked a review paper on Garcinia sps in Researgate and matched with G.xanthochymus. Now I am really confused !
