In India it is found in Assam, Andra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. It is an annual and sometimes a perennial plant. It is a commonly seen plant growing abundantly in ditches, in open marshes places, in seasonally flooded plains, forest clearings and in the rice fields.
