Plant name: Cyperus fuscus L., Sp. Pl. 1: 46. 1753.
Ver. names: Brown galingale, brown flatsedge (Eng.)
Family: Cyperaceae
Description: Herbs, annual; culms trigonous, 5–30 cm tall, glabrous, forming small tufts. Leaves basal, shorter than stem, flat, 4–10 cm × 2–3 mm, margins smooth, apex long, acute, scabrous. Inflorescence an irregular, spreading multiple spike, rays 1-3, up to 2cm, bracts 2–3, longest erect, others spreading, 1–20 cm long. Spikelets 3–12, narrowly ellipsoid, purplish black in color. Spikes 3-15 × 1.5-2 mm, compressed, tight, with 10-40 glumes; rachis laterally compressed purple shiny. Glumes cymbiform, mucronate, margins scarious. Stamens 2. Stigmas 3. Nut, ellipsoid, trigonous or convex.
Habitat & location: Exotic. Found near rivers, streams and canal margins, flooded areas, moist fields. Photographed at Somasila.
