Cyperus digitatus is distributed in pantropics and subtropics (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Mexico, Central America, South America and Africa). In India it is known to occur in Andra Pradesh (throughout; B. Sadasivaiah pers. comm.), Arunacahal pradesh, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh (Bastar), Magalays, Maharashtra (Halkarni, Nittur, Pune, Satara, Thane), Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu (Madurai- Poyakarai at 133m, Near Vadipatti., Nilgiri- Kotagiri, Mukurti at 2050m, Salem- Kaveri Peak, Yerkad at 140m., Nagapatnam District- Valanganni, Thiruchirapalli), Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka (Mysore) and Kerala (Idukki, Thiruvannanthapurum, Kotayam) (Cook 1996, Verma 2001, Bhargavan 1987, BSI Coimbatore). 
It is a perennial herb, found in swamps or seasonally flooded areas, wet rice fields, ditches and river banks (Cook 1996) and also open grasslands (Bhargavan 1989). Its occurrence in wet rice fields is doubtful.       


Erect, tufted, shortly, rhizomatous perennials; culms 30-65 cm tall, triquetrous above, trigonous below. Leaves basal, 15-45 x 0.5-1 cm, linear, acute, flat, scabrid on margins; sheaths upto 20 cm long, purple coloured. Inflorescence compound or decompound; leafy bracts 4-8, the longer ones upto 45 cm long; primary rays 4 to 10, unequal. Spikelets 6-10 x 1-1.5 mm, linear, weakly flattened, straw-coloured. Glumes 1.5-2 mm long, narrowly elliptic, keeled on back, pale straw-coloured. Stamens 3. Stigmas 3. Nut c. 1 x 0.5 mm, oblong-elliptic, trigonous, apiculate, greyish-brown, minutely puncticulate.

Hooghly Today : Cyperus digitatus Roxb. ?

The culm of this cyperus is about 3 ft. or may be more. It is growing in a lowland, among other grasses, sedges etc. I do not have any more stats because it was far away from me.
