Platycladus orientalis

Biota, Chinese arborvitae, oriental arborvitae, oriental thuja  • Hindi: मोरपंखी Morpankhi, मयूरपंखी mayurpankhi • Manipuri: Lairikheibi;

Shrub to small tree with somewhat flattened branches, closely appressed minute leaves and woody almost globose female cones with peltate scales with curved processes, turning brown when mature.

Platycladus
is a distinct genus of evergreen coniferous tree in the cypress family Cupressaceae, containing only one species, Platycladus orientalis, also known as Chinese arborvitae, biota or oriental thuja.
It is endemic to northwestern China. It is also now naturalised as an introduced species elsewhere in Asia: eastward to Korea and Japan; southward to northern India; and westward to northern Iran.
The binomial Platycladus means "with broad or flattened shoots". The qualifier orientalis refers to its native habitat in China.[3]
It is a small, slow-growing tree, to 15-20 m tall and 0.5 m trunk diameter (exceptionally to 30 m tall and 2 m diameter in very old trees). The foliage forms in flat sprays with scale-like leaves 2-4 mm long. The cones are 15-25 mm long, green ripening brown in about eight months from pollination, and have 6-12 thick scales arranged in opposite pairs. The seeds are 4-6 mm long, with no wing.
It is used as an ornamental tree, both in its homeland, where it is associated with long life and vitality, and very widely elsewhere in temperate climates.
Several cultivars have been selected, of which 'Aurea nana'[4] and 'Elegantissima'[5] have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
The wood is used in Buddhist temples, both for construction work, and chipped, for incense burning

Thuja orientalis is the synonym, including Biota orientalis.
Yes .. was aware of the earlier name Thuja orientalis. Now correctly called as Platycladus orientalis
Family : Cupressaceae
Thuja is (/Thuja occidentalis/) abendlndisches Lebensbausm or tree of life. A popular plant on the border between two gardens, as it is evergreen and dense. The neighbour can't look thru.  This is also popularly planted on the graveyards.

Ornamental Bush for ID : 011011 : AK-3: Pictures taken at a garden in Srinagar, Kashmir.
Seems to be Morpankhi, or a species of it as the fruit looked a little different.
A medium sized bush, about 5-6 feet in height.
Cupressus macropoda
Is the name 'Cupressus macropoda' correct as I could not find any match on search.
Can you please check for Cupressus arizonica or Arizona Cypress on FOI?
Your picture of the same is also taken in Srinagar, Kashmir. Kindly verify.
I could not find any valid name of Cupressus macropoda in IPNI. May be some mistake in spellings etc.
To me this looks like Thuja orientalis...
Many thanks ... for the id of this long pending post of mine.

Posted earlier on our group.
Taken at a plant nursery in Srinagar on 10/9/2011.
... had suggested Cupressus macropoda, ... Thuja orientalis.
The latter seems to be correct.
Kindly confirm id.
Thuja orientalis now known as Pladycladus orientalis.

One more plant from my collection.
Cupressus (Morpankhi in Marathi)
I think Platycladus orientalis (Thuja orientalis).

Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco [Cupressaceae] is one of the most common ornamental shrub/tree or sometimes maintained as hedge in India. More popularly mentioned as Thuja orientalis L. in earlier scientific literature it is well known by the common name ‘More Pankhi’.
It is a native of North Western China.
