Feedback from another thread:

I have been somewhat confused about the status of Zehneria scabra, uploaded by several members including ..., ... and other members from Kas
These confusions are often confounded by the absence of author citations. Strange as it may look Zehneria scabra (L.f.) Sond (Swedeish name flikig pilreva), and Melothria scabra Naudin (Swedish name djungelgurka), are two distinct species, often confused on net, as Melothria is an important species with good looking mini watermelon like fruits, and none look similar to our Kas plants. and as such names Cape zehneria, South African Zehneria won't apply to our Kas plant.
My doubts are supported by recent nomenclature update by Renner and Pandey in 2013
They do not list Zehneria scabra for India, and Melothria perpusilla (Blume) Cogn. is cited as synonym of Zehneria perpusilla (Bl.) Bole and Almeida.......but as per citation this species does not grown in India.
The other name often cited as synonym of Melothria perpusilla is correctly Zehneria hookeriana (Wight & Arn) Arn, is endemic to Tamil Nadu
This leaves third name Zehneria maysorensis (Wight & Arn.) Arn. found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Could it be our plant from Kas???

could someone identify the climber please?
Date & Time        30 September 2010
Location: Place, Altitude, GPS        Chethalayam, Wayanad.
Habitat: Garden, Urban, Wild Type:        Wild
Plant Habit: Tree, Shrub, Climber, Herb        Climber
Fruits Type, Shape, Size Seeds        Fruits round green when raw, red when ripe, diameter 8 mm.
Looks like some Zehneria sp. from Cucurbitaceae.
Most probably Zehneria scabra (Linn. f.) Sond.
Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) is abbreviated as L. and not Linn..
Similarly, Carl Linnaeus (1741-1783) is cited as L.f. and not Linn.f.
This is according to ICBN as well as Brummitt and Powel (1992). Though the name is same but the persons are different.

Seen growing wild in Mahabaleshwar.

Zehneria species so far in efi.
Plant is Zehneria scabra Sond.; Tendrils are simple, leaves deltoid, three angled, margins distantly toothed.
This could be Zehneria maysorensis.
Please check this link:
Thanks for correction.
Zehneria scabra has been badly confused in India: please see older post and the relevant conclusion:
"So our collections having gone under Zehneria scabra in our websites may be sought to be segregated into three species: Zehneria maysorensis with broadly ovate scabrous leaves, ovate corolla lobes and oblong 8-15 mm long fruits, Z. bodinieri with ovate leaves longer than broad, glabrous leaves, ovate-oblong corolla lobes and globose 8-10 mm fruits, and very similar Z. hookeriana"
I take my post as Zehneria maysorensis  as suggested by ... and differences explained by you Sir?
I had a relook at all the posts in efi site on Zehneria and added keys herein.

If my understanding is correct, then the first picture is of Zehneria maysorensis (Wight& Arn.) Arn. and the second one could be of Zehneria bodinieri (H.Lév.)W.J.de Wilde & Duyfjes. Pl refer to the following paper.
Thanks ... You seem to have made my contention in the below thread more stronger
"So our collections having gone under Zehneria scabra in our websites may be sought to be segregated into three species: Zehneria maysorensis with beroadly ovate scabrous leaves, ovate corolla lobes and oblong 8-15 mm long fruits, Z. bodinieri with ovate leaves longer than broad, glabrous leaves, ovate-oblong corolla lobes and globose 8-10 mm fruits, and very similar Z. hookeriana"

Yes, ..., thanks again for sensing this important issue and calling for a revisit of Zehneria. This will enable us to update the nomenclature in our database.
As per the literature, and as also pointed out by you in an earlier thread, Z. scabra and the genus Melothria (now regarded "confined to America") do not occur in India. This is a major shift in our understanding as we have been using these names to our Indian plants. While the distinction between Z. bodinieri and Z. maysorensis are clear, the differences between the former species and Z. hookeriana are still vague (at least to me). A well-defined key to the Zehneria species in India would help sort out the confusion more effectively.

Many thanks ... for updating this thread with the ongoing discussion of Zehneria - Melothria.
Hoping to get clarity from those who are studying Cucurbitaceae of Maharashtra - especially Western Ghats.
Please take a look at the types. The most recent treatment (de Wilde and Duyfjes, 2006, cited in full below) does not consider M. perpusilla var. subtruncata a synonym of Z. maysorensis, but I am unsure why.
The syntypes of Melothria perpusilla (Blume) Cogn. var. subtruncata Cogn. are:
India, Wight 1151 (CAL image attached; K, LE, W),
Sri Lanka, Thwaites 1613 (BR, CAL image attached, G, K, LE, P).

Thanks, ..., Should we finally take this attached plant from Kas as Zehneria maysorensis (Wight & Arn.) Arn. as I am not able to clearly understand the intricacies ?
I am afraid I have to refer you to my message of July 4 to which I had provided the links to images of the types of Zehneria maysorensis in Paris and Kew.
You will need to look at this images and decide whether your plant represents Zehneria maysorensis.

Yes, I know but need correct ID !
Pl. check comparative images at Cucurbitaceae
I checked but could not conclude!
Zehneria species as per images herein & as per comparative images at Cucurbitaceae
Zehneria maysorensis (Wight & Arn.) Arn. (accepted name)  ??

Pl. see distribution of Zehneria species in India : The Cucurbitaceae of India: Accepted names, synonyms, geographic distribution, and information on images and DNA sequences by Susanne S. Renner, Arun K. Pandey. (2013)
As per this, Zehneria maysorensis is distributed in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu. Endemic.
Zehneria indica (Lour.) Keraudren is a synonym of Zehneria japonica (Thunb.) H.Y. Liu with
Distribution in India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Punjab, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal. Distribution outside India: Thailand, China, Japan; Indonesia (Java, Sumatra)

I think Zehneria maysorensis (Wight & Arn.) Arn. Is a good species.
The types of this name is from S India, Wallich 6702, also Wight 1116.— A synonym may be:
Zehneria maysorensis (Wight & Arn.) Arn. var.  oblonga V. P. Prasad & M. Prasad, J. Econ. Taxon. Bot. 17 (2): 471. 1993. Type: S India,
Vivekananthan 45710 (MH? It would be great to see an image of this sheet).
Monoecious or dioecious. Ovary and fruit ellipsoid, longer than broad. Distribution: confined to southern peninsular India, at
low altitudes.

This is still kept in unidentified section in the site. Is not it the correct ID. I guess it is the correct ID.

... says distribution: confined to southern peninsular India, at  low altitudes for Zehneria maysorensis (Wight & Arn.) Arn.
It may be some other Zehneria species. Pl. check with other species in efi site.

Zehneria

Zehneria. ID is pending.
1 attachment.
It appears more closer to Zehneria bodinieri (H. Léveillé) W. J. de Wilde & Duyfjes rather than Zehneria japonica (Thunb.) H.Y. Liu as per images and details herein.
But question remains if it is distributed in Nepal (although it is reported from North India).

Could it be? It is not listed in Nepal.
No. Definitely it is not Zehneria maysorensis as per details herein and as at Zehneria
It is likely to be Zehneria bodinieri only as per keys and details herein.
Recently a new combination seems to have been made as Zehneria odorata (Hook.fil. & Thomson ex C.B.Clarke) M.D.Dwivedi, A.K.Pandey & H.Schaef., Taxon 67(1): 62 2018 (syn: Zehneria indica (Lour.) Keraudren as mentioned in Checklist of Nepal) as per POWO. However, POWO does not show its distribution in Nepal.
Earlier The Cucurbitaceae of India: Accepted names, synonyms, geographic distribution, and information on images and DNA sequences by Susanne S. Renner, Arun K. Pandey. (2013) has given Zehneria indica (Lour.) Keraudren (as mentioned in Checklist of Nepal) as a syn. of  Zehneria japonica (Thunb.) H.Y. Liu.
Pdf of Zehneria odorata (Hook.fil. & Thomson ex C.B.Clarke) M.D.Dwivedi, A.K.Pandey & H.Schaef., Taxon 67(1): 62 2018 is available at
So only species, which is now available in Nepal seems to be Zehneria bodinieri only.

Zehneria ..... ???

Zehneria bodinieri (H. Léveillé) W. J. de Wilde & Duyfjes as per comparative images, keys and distribution at Zehneria

So far it is not listed in Nepal. So a bit confusion!
I think we have discussed this many times before.
Publications at Zehneria are much after the Checklist of Nepal.
