This looks like Operculina turpethum
... the Indian jalap ... Operculina turpethum. Sometimes, as now, the sepal cup looks less wide than normal and my mind starts thinking about the hogvine, Merremia umbellata. Some visual clue to easily separate the two species ?
.., Operculina turpethum has winged stem, the leaves are ovate and bigger and petioles are longer. Merremia umbellata has un-winged stem, oblong and smaller leaves and short petioles.
As .. says...although the flowers were similar looking, I found two type of leaves on the different creepers, one smaller is size.
the leaves of O. turphetum are very varaible even in same plant.

Most of the regions in our country know it by some name; must be well-known for its medicinal value ... http://envis.frlht.org/plant_details.php?disp_id=1553&parname=0
I remember observing this plant In Kolkata with ...
The important character is the winged stem. Often 3-5 wings are observed. I am not sure if any of the pictures posted so far do show this but I can make out some of these here in the last photograph.
I have not understood the description of the capsule as circumsessile. I am sure you will show us this feature someday.

Convolvulaceae by wing : Operculina turpethum (L.) Silva Manso:
As i told yesterday the convolvulaceae week still goes on ringing into my mind...... !
..., the Hero of the Convolvulaceae Week posted a member at - efi thread.
Keys of Convolvulaceae -
I have been watching this twiner since then. It took long time to show me its buds. Well, buds only, no flower yet!
The most interesting part of my story is that it was growing alongside Ipomoea alba L., often intertwined with the later. Who knew that it would also turn out another convolvulaceae one day!!!
Species : Operculina turpethum (L.) Silva Manso
Habit & Habitat : wild twiner, as gigantic as Ipomoea alba, winged stem, leaves size equals that of Ipomoea alba but with more prominent venation
Date : 19/10/12, 10 a.m.
Place : Kamarkundu (Hooghly)
I loved seeing the winged stem. any more pics of the stem?
and look forward to you pics of the open flowers
Attaching four pics, two recorded on the 25th August and rest yesterday.
Yes, flower is important, dekha jak...
Shots of this morning....
Found this one near my home, today.
Attaching images of seedpod of this plant, recorded on 10th, this month, in Hooghly.
Really beautiful ...
Now i find this is common here, spreading in waste-places, beside rail-tracks with its white flowers and pinkish seedpods.

Climber ID request - RK51 - 27-Nov-2012: Request id of this climber from Vasai region. The leaves have a magenta margin and the stem as seen in the last photo is twisted. I am also confused if the first photo is of fruits or flower buds?

23062014GS1 wood climber for ID from Karnal : 14 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (2).
Kindl help in the ID of this woody climber (Liana) photographed along Roadside in Karnal in September.

Looks very similar to Operculina turpethum (L.) Silva Manso

Yes, I agree with ...
Thanks a lot ... And yes this should be a herbaceous climber.
'Bengal Plants'. FBI and FI describe it as a perennial stout climber. I have pictures of dried stem. I think, if left undisturbed the base of stem can be woody. In fact a document claims it to be a 'woody vine'.
Thank you very much. Thank you ...
Lalawmkima Darlong (personal communication) has suggested Byttneria aspera Collb. (Sterculiaceae), Looks more convincing.
The docs/illustrations found in the following links do not support winged stem. Moreover, the leaves in the photographs seem to have 7 basal veins.
Thanks ... for useful analysis.
I was wondering if Buettneria aspera Colebrooke in FBI or FoN is same as Byttneria grandiflora DC.! FBI informs it's a tree! Attachments (1).
Link I have given Byttneria aspera (Chinese name: prickly fruit vine)
and this http://www.hkherbarium.net/herbarium/topics/topic3/climbers.htm
Yes, Sir, I have noted that in you earlier mail. My query was why it had been entered as a tree in FBI. I have found the answer in Haines (attached here). Attachments (1)
Sir No need to have any doubt. 101% Operculina turpethum. A highly important medicinal Plant Called as "Nishoth". This plant grow in plenty along roadside area in Panipat and Karnal Districts
Accepted ... if you are so sure.
I do agre with ..., must be O. turpethum only..

Wild Climbers For ID : Nasik : 070514 : AK-14 : 4 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (2).
These wild climbers were growing all over the place in a wild area.
Leaves suggest Ipomoea species.
Pictures taken on 4/5/14.
May be Ipomoea
Please find the Plant ID for link below: efi thread
Plant is large climber, a member of Convolvulaceae and most interesting in second image stem is slightly 3-ribbed or can say 3-winged. So, this is Operculina turpethum (L.) Silva Manso

This plant collected from mahur ghad, Nanded Dist. Maharashtra
It is convovulaceae member....
Your plant here seems to be Operculina turpethum
i cant see any features of the flower.
You must stand in such a way that your body casts a shadow on the flower you 'll be able to catch more details  esp in a white or any light colored flower.

Where & when was it clicked ?
Operculina turpethum. Winged stem can be seen.
To me it looks like Operculina turpethum
Why there are no messages in this mail ?
O. turpethum again.
In my area it is very common, flowers whole year, except after the rains come ......… for nearly one to two months, depending on the spell of rains, it stops flowering and spends all its energy in spreading ........ vigorous growth, huge leaves, nearly round in shape with base cordate and apex obtuse ..............once rains stop and sun comes back , depending on the availability of water, new leaf shape changes abruptly to hastate and long narrow. In extreme summer , leaves become very small, linear lanceolate to somewhat trilobed. Flowers will come up now as rain is receding ...… bigger flowers than those in summer months.
There was some query and I specifically checked inflorescence and peduncle size compared to petiole ......… I found, flower can be single in leaf axil, to multiple flowered raceme .... 2 to 4 commonly ...… peduncle of inflorescence may be shorter or equal or longer compared to subtending petiole.
Not only that, as winter goes away ........ in Surat after 15 January....... some vines, but not all, show pale yellow colored corolla ....... more pronounced in buds and as the day progresses color fades away. Also yellow tinged buds open up about 30 to 60 minutes later. .............
I have read about O. tansaensis and all I could get is ....... it is a sub-shrub as against sprawling O. turpethum. I dream of one fine day going in the area of Tansa lake to
see this species. Online I could find abstract of two recent works by Botanists from Maharashtra ........ fortunately they are members of Indian Flora facebook group ........ I tagged them, messaged too, but sadly got no response . ..............
There is a report of very similar looking flower from Tripura ....... it has been identified as Merremia mammosa ....... its cordate. leaves are distinct in having dentate margin.

I guess … is correct !
