Flora picture of the Year 2012: Cyanotis pillosa Schult. f. from one of my favorite family Commelinaceae, I willing to add as Flora picture for this year. Although C. pillosa is the traditional name that has been applied to this species, but I didn't find extreme pilose leaf surfaces, it has very similar leaf surfaces like other Cyanotis species. Photograph were taken on the way to Manohar- Man Santoshgad (Kudal/ Ajara Tehsil) Dist. Sindhudurg/ Kolhapur, in the month of October. Actually on 2nd October. Species is adapted to rocky habitat viz. collected from crevices of rocky outcrops. Plants of high elevation so we were climb up to 900 meters  and plant with numerous inflorescences. This species is very close to C. adscendens, but C. adscendens is with fusiform tuberous root, few flowered inflorescence and plant of high elevation. Might be this species is not shared by anyone earlier in this forum. Distribution: India and Sri Lanka. Wao........ i can understand the joy when u had to climb the rock of 1000 m height and find a plant of narrow distributional range in the rock crevices. Beautiful picture and nice experience ...

This Commelina herb was seen at Eravikulam National Park, Munnar. Family: Commelinaceae, Requesting ID.. Cyanotis speciosa ? check Tradescantia sp. probably Tradescantia virginiana. loved your pics, esp pic 2324c...shows the blue fuzzy stamen hairs. there is an apocryphal story that this plant may be natures geiger indicator because it seems those stamen hair turn to pink from naturally blue when exposed to radiation. go figure! if this is t. virginiana. a side view of the flowers would help. i have my guess/ opinion. but would appreciate taxonomists opinion greatly ... May be right, Appears to be Cyanotis pillosa to me!! current pictures are very different from the Foi pictures also by ..., also validated then by ... so if petals have fallen off in that picture , then from my viewpoint its past the prime. yet the filamentous stamen hairs are "fresh" and vibrant. in present case the petals are intact, now i am confused about the the subtending cradle, that looks more like tradescantia, and the foi pictures do not show any flower petals, So ..., much variation can occur in this species???. thanks in advance for telling us.
