070311-PR For ID- Chennai.: These winged seeds were found hanging in bunches on a tree which had the
bark and leaves and habit of Lagerstroemia speciosa.
As photography is not allowed in the garden, I am hoping the seeds will throw some light on the ID.
I think the flowers , a few weeks ago, were small and inconspicuous.

- These could be fruits of Terminalia paniculata.
- I don't know what link I checked yesterday but I saw a fruit like a guava and so was misled.
Yes, I am convinced the seeds are of Terminalia paniculata. Are the flowers like those of Arjuna?

This is an old tree found in Trivandrum amidst a group of Albezia
It is found to be in flower during winter when cattle egrets flock to it in search of insects.
Can anyone identify (Sorry for the poor photographs)
A wild-guess from the available clarity would be Terminalia paniculata
I dont think it is Terminalia paniculata. Precise location in Trivandrum city would be more easy for me to take a good photograph.
This is Terminalia paniculata Roth, rather found throughout kerala. It is also found in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Tamilnadu (Western Ghats)

Flowers of Terminalia paniculata.
Location: North Karnataka, Kadra.

Yes.

CCM Fortnight: Combretaceae- ANDEC45 Terminalia sp. for identification : 18 posts by 9 authors. Attachments (3). Bangalore outskirts
I think Terminalia paniculata..
Terminalia paniculata has a large central wing of the fruit and two smaller lateral wings which is not the case here.
Which Terminalia sp. can it be sir?
To me it's Terminalia paniculata
Not very sure but it could be Triplaris weigeltiana of Polygonaceae.
Seen in Lalbagh by me.
Your identity does seem to match ma'am. But is this tree commonly planted I wonder? Also, I have to mention that the village in which this tree is found overlaps with Bannerghatta National Park. Several wild trees have been left as such (like Dalbergia latifolia) and the planted trees in the area only extend to Acacia auriculiformis, Syzygium jambos, Pongamia pinnata.
That only the experts can decide....since I am not one.
Let us wait for experts to validate.
This looks like Terminalia paniculata to me.
... did you have a look at the underside of the leaves?
There would be pair of glands at the junction of the petiole and the midrib if it is Terminalia paniculata.
We will wait for the experts to comment.
I will visit the area this weekend and get some photos of the glands if present. Will update soon!
When so many experts are verifying, I suppose my guess was a wrong one.
Thank you very much ...

Family: Combretaceae

Place: Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala
Habit: Medium sized tree

Beautiful close ups. A complete set.
Are these flowers? in first photograph. I think so.
Will anybody clarify about the distinguishable feature about the basal glands of the leaves nicely shown here or they are just a character of Terminalia?
Thank you sir. I think they are the young fruits. I assume after a point they become reddish

Found this tree in bloom at Thirthahalli, Shimoga in Oct 2016.
Pl. Check comparative images at Terminalia page in efi
I think appears closer to images at Terminalia elliptica Willd. as per comparative images at Terminalia
Thank you very much! I thought so too, but needed confirmation..
It looks more like Terminalia paniculata to me
Yes, T. paniculata. Note the subglobose foliar glands, invaginated at the apex and the dense panicles with subfoliaceous bracts. This is an endemic species. There is beautiful drawing in [unpubl.] Icones Roxburghianae No. 2252 (CAL).
The type material, collected by Benjamin Heyne from peninsular India was housed in the Berlin herbarium and was probably destroyed during World War II.

Saw this young sapling of Terminalia elliptica near Devgad, MH in May 2017.
Requested to please confirm ID.

In vegetative condition, T. elliptica can be distinguished from T. arjuna  (the only two species in India under sect. Pentaptera) with certainty by the presence of conspicuous, often shortly stipitate, clavate or turbinate foliar glands on the undersurface of the leaves at or near the junction of petiole and lamina and sometimes also on the midrib some distance away from the base.  In T. arjuna, the foliar glands are small, circular and sessile.  In this case, therefore, the images are referable to T. elliptica Willd.
These foliar glands look very much like those found on Terminalia paniculata.  In Terminalia elliptica the glands tend to be stalked and are often further up on the leaf blade.

Thank you for the suggestion. I was asked to confirm whether this is T. elliptica or not. Now you are telling about T. paniculata. The important fact that comes out of this discussion is that the respected members should be discouraged to post any image of the sterile materials. It is already difficult to identify a plant accurately through the images without measurements and of dissected parts. We can identify the images with our prior acquaintances and familiarity but in unknown groups, it is very very difficult to identify a sterile material.

Found in Yelagiri hills of Eastern ghats.
Locals called in Piluvai or Piluva tree in Tamil. (Sadly google does not result anything).
It was in full bloom with fragrance in air.
I found it across the hills widely distributed and could easily identify with the white flowers.

More pictures. Attachments (1) - 5 MB.

Some Terminalia species.

It may be Terminalia arjuna (See the characteristics of stem if buttress form at base or not) or Terminalia chebula belongs to family Combretaceae

Thanks Tapas Sir.
But I have a doubt with the more pictures taken on it.
I doubt  the parts in red color are fruits?

Yes, T. paniculata.

How to reproduce through the Wing seeds or samara?
Is there any way? or it can be reproduced through cuttings.

i made some saplings by sowing many seeds together in a 'mother bed' and later transplanting into separate bags. Not all seeds germinate.

Requesting to please ID this shrub/tree captured on a cliff in South Goa in May 2019.

Terminalia ?

Very doubtful suggestion: leaves have some resemblance to Cananga

do you have any close ups of the leaves?
I see what look like cashew trees around and also coconut leaves. Is this tree wild or was it planted?

I think this tree was growing wild. It was captured in a fort in South Goa (Cabo de Rama) and was growing on the slope reaching out to the sea.
I do not have any further pics.
The leaves seem to have a gland on the reverse side.
Unfortunately, I also cannot upload any cropped pics as I have lost the software to crop pics. Will try to post the closeup in another 4-5 days.

If so, pl. post the original image.
Please find attached a cropped image of the leaves.
Hoping, this would help to ID.
Thanks, ..., Looking at the glands below the leaves it seems to be Terminalia paniculata Roth
There are glands at the leaf base which is the characteristic feature of Terminalia species.
