This is a lofty tree and is occasionally planted as avenue.. These pics are recorded from the campus of a College near my native place.. Expert opinion is invited to please validate/correct the id.. efi page on Terminalia chebula I doubt that it is T. chebula because in that species the leaves are not usually clustered together at the tips of branches. Also I don't see characteristic leaf glands. There is a chance for T. bellerica in which leaf glands are often indistinct and which usually has prominent leaf scars. To me it seems to be Terminalia bellerica. This looks like Terminalia bellerica to me too.
Attached are pictures of Terminalia bellirica captured at a cultivated garden in Mumbai in March 2013. I used to watch this tree everyday and its journey from being completely bare to becoming green again was spectacular. Beautiful set of photographs!

I observe two attached trees. Terminalia bellirica and palm tree in a lake bund, near Guduvanchery, Chennai. The bond between the two tree is strong and sustaining. Interesting pictures! The callus formation could be to self-heal the wound created by constant bruising of the palm tree while swaying in wind. But it looks like it won't sway anymore! You are correct ..., thanks. I see one tree lean on another often and often then very strangle the support and strangler is often a fig I wonder why did it need to grow in a leaning angle... that it needed support...?? And what you said about the bond is heart-warming... just like one human being needing support from another...

Yesterday I happen to attend a slideshow/presentation where a botanist (Not active on Net) showed a series of Terminalia leaves from different species. She had tried to document the differences and characteristics of glands indifferent individual species. What I learnt was T. bellerica often has glands which are not at the base of the leaves but in the petiole itself which appears slightly swollen midway in its length. It stimulated my curiosity which made me write yesterday's request to ...This is something different than what ... observations. When I checked elsewhere in whatever data available to me what I got is No glands in T. bellerica. I will check with her again and if possible will try to collect those pictures for opinion. Your note above prompted me to check some literature, and first thing I discovered what you wrote. In Flora of China it is clearly written and illustrated that unlike other species whether glands are generally present at the tip of petiole (or say base of leaf blade) in T. bellirica the two glands are present at about the middle of petiole. Now coming to the presence of the species in India, The Flora of British India differentiates two varieties (rather three of which we ignore one right now). var: typica (syn: T. eglandulosa) No glands at the apex of petiole var. belerica, two glands at apex of the petiole beneath the leaf unfortunately no mention is made about the places of distribution of two varieties. Faced with this confusion I rushed to the Herbal Garden in Punjabi Bagh (6 km away) and a garden in our area whether this tree grows, and found that there is no trace of any glands any where on the petiole in our area. We should as such be looking at three variants (whether they have any taxonomic status or not be ignored) 1. The common Indian form with no glands at all 2. The form with two glands at the tip of petiole as mentioned in FBI 3. The form with two glands in the middle of petiole as mentioned in Flora of China. It would be interesting to know if this form grows in India also. I also read an old article from Transanctions of Linnaean Society Vol. 17, 1837, a commentary by Hamilton, in which two forms of Bahara (perhaps meaning Baheda) (T. bellirica) are recognised: Greater bahara or Bahara major with larger fruits and Smaller bahara or Bahara minor with smaller fruits, described from Duriapur and Domdoho, respectively (wonder what are these places). Perhaps some one can throw some more light on this important medicinal plant of India. The Traditional Healers of India divide Terminalia chebula fruits in over 30 different types based on type of fruit including Abhya, Chetki etc. Similarly on the basis of fruit types Bahera i.e. Terminalia bellirica is also having tens of types. These types are not mentioned in Taxonomic literature, so far. I hope members would concentrate to solve puzzle of types based on glands in India. It would be real job because internet is full of inconsistent information. I have just photographed the underside of T bellirica leaves. Photo is attached here. These were new leaves. This is incredible, ...! Thanks for the pictures and your great efforts. You have seen the form (with glands) after Roxburgh and Dr. Almeida in India, I think. I want to tell Hooker, Brandis, Gamble... that this form DOES occur in S.India, and can be seen it in ... garden!!! When you find time, please try to compare this tree (leaf, flower, fruit etc) with the non-glandular one to check if there is any other difference between these two forms. Are the mature leaves in this tree possess glands too? This seems to be supporting what ... and Flora of China report. Perhaps Hooker, etc. were ignoring these glands on petiole and just concentrating on glands at the tip of petiole tip, or they what they called glands on petiole tip would be just these, an interesting thing to investigate. It would be a good exercise if all members concentrate on this aspect, or some really find a Baheda with glands near the tip of petiole. Studied 2 sets of leaves from the same tree. Also found that in addition to the glands already featured in my previous mail, there were also black dots [? glands] at the apex of the petioles in some of the leaves. Sending a few photographs to showcase these. I checked many branches of my tree and none has any glands near the tip of petiole. I will check other trees too. I could not detect any glands in my Delhi specimens anywhere on petiole, photographed earlier. I will explore more soon, This tree (with glands) belongs to the variety 2: bellirica (as belerica) of C.B.Clarke (in Hooker's FBI). This is what Roxburgh described as T. belerica based ONLY on the presence of two glands. He named the most common non-glandular form as a different species namely T. eglandulosa and later renamed as T. moluccana, which is now synonymous to C.B.Clarke's Terminalia bellirica var. typica. The number and position of the glands seem to be variable as we can see from these pictures. Some have two pairs of glands, one at the base of leaf-blade and the other on the petiole. In some the glands located at the middle and in some near tip of the petiole. These glands are somewhat inconspicuous when compare to that of other species. I don't know if the glands persist or disappear when the leaves mature. At any case, this is really interesting. If we find some solid differences, then the previous status can be reinstated! Belleric Myrobalan is a common tree in many states-Eastern ghats. Rhododendron arboreum is Himalayan and common at Shillong peak,Darjeeling and Gangtok. Immature post : for ID: This pic I have posted earlier or not, no sure about it. But this was lying in my pending IDs for almost 6 months. All I could recollect it was clicked in month of May`12. Where and what, I have no idea. Where are the others pics of the parts of the plant/climber/tree, I am afraid of that, too. May be I cant recollect during my extensive field trip during those days at Matheran or at Barvi for its whereabouts. All that I can guess about are Anogeissus latifolia, Ceiba pentandra or Lophopetalum wightianum ! POSTING IT FOR ID PURPOSE. I strongly feel this to be Lannea coromandelica. The season matches too. The photographs of flower differ from region to region and also according to phase of maturity. I have seen completely yellow flowers as well as flowers with strong red tinge as seen here. Often the petals are bigger in some phase while the stamens are bigger at different phase. This is my perception. Will wait for comments.
