The wood is very useful in construction of boats. The oil obtained from the seeds is medicinal as well as used as fuel;

Seen the Flowering and Fruiting of *Calophyllum inophyllum**.
Family: Clusiaceae.
Date/Time: 28-08-2011 / 10:15AM
Location: Mumbai

Close up of the flower is a rear sight... usually we get to see the fallen flowers here.. since picking of flowers is a no no and the trees we have in our parks are 30 - 40 years old.. hence quite tall, beyond our reach... this is unique..
It is called as undi उंडी  or Punnag पुन्नाग
A tree common in coastal parts. I have seen these in Coastal Konkan near Rajapur. Many trees in Pondicherry too.
In Pune one tree is present In Abasaheb Garware college; One in Karve nagar in the lane opposite Tathawade Udyan.
Was flowering in last fortnight.

In an ethnobotany course a few years ago, we were told by a visiting professor (name forgotten) :
in the old days the seeds were collected by coastal village folks (read women) and used for oil lamps.... recently saw conferences being advertised internationally about use of Calophyllum inophyllum cultivation for profit for bio diesel industry ....

so its old wisdom gathered by these women from their and their ancestors' experiences and use of their innate intellect , wonder if anybody thought of compensating them for their "patent"  and "TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER" ? These
same farmers // poor folks are asked to fork over major money for hybrid or "improved" seeds  and pay for intellectual rights of MNC scientists !!!!

Local folks still use the fruits for oil.
In Tamil Nadu the oil is not only used for lighting lamps but also used in treating skin diseases. The tree is a sacred tree and planted in temple premises (Shiva). A beautiful specimen tree is seen inside Mylapore temple ( Kapaleswarar koil), Chennai.

Need identification of this tree : 12 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (4).
Kindly help identify this tree.
Pictures are of two trees but they are the same in every way, one is young and one is a little older.
They are growing near each other at Worli, Mumbai.
most likely calophyllum inophyllum
lets see what ... or other experts botanists think
Looked it up on the net and it seems as if you have nailed it...

when it flowers smallish white /crean flowers and then round green folowed by wrinkled bros round balls of fruits... please take several pictures of the flowers... it would not be dfiicult since these are young trees so not far above to reach for pics..
Sure! Just waiting for that to happen!
The tree looks like a miniature Barringtonia......and the flowers which I checked on the net...also look amazingly like those of the Barringtonia.
Does not look like Barringtonia species
efi page on Calophyllum inophyllum
Agreeing with the id Calophyllum inophyllum.
Calophyllum inophyllum L.
Looking at the leaves I think it is Calophyllum inophyllum.

Attached are pictures of Calophyllum inophyllum fruits captured at Sagar Upvan, Mumbai in February 2013.

The tree was seen in Mumbai, in a garden in Anushaktinagar-
Date taken : Mar 22, 2015
Some nuts?
Fruits collected from underground of the tree. Are both fruits are the same?
Please help.

May be Calophyllum! or any other Clusiaceae.
brown seed was much larger than its current size when it was green = logical.
so speaks of greater disparity in size of the two = obvious.
second the smaller seed could be from the same tree ... fruits of same tree can be of different size, dropping off means some violence, high winds storm rain storm or birds or animals dropped it, so it remains small...????
i  can only suggest  cut/saw it neatly in half and see if the inside structure is the same
if only one seeds inside, only Clusiaceae with one seeded fruit is calophyllum
==
i wish you had picked a leaf and photographed that... strong primary vein and almost parallel secondary veins with inconspicuous tertiary veins = calophyllum
=======
or let it dry and see if it begins to look the same as the brown on...
Secondly what other trees were there that could produce roundish green fruits?
==
if you are back in kolkata,
salt lake central park has many calophyllum inophyllum trees to the left of the main walkway  keeping the lake to the right
you could check out resemblance to your tree there  and the fallen seeds early in the morning will be still there before the sweepers  haul them away..
seeds are  good source of oil (very dense) for oil lamps
that's the ethnobotanic use for the seeds, used to be very popular, but with ration shop kerosene available just by standing in line,  seems to be fallen off the radar for manufacture in the villages along the ganges delta..
Thank you all, for quick response.
..., I am in Kolkata now. I will try to visit central park as you suggested.
The fruit had one seed inside, I have checked in Mumbai.
so if you take its pictures
please send them in, here in this thread, ...
looking forward to them
Callophyllum innophyllum

Tree for ID, Hyderabad NAW-FEB17-01 : 10 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (4)
Kindly Identify this tree, photographed in Hyderabad in June, 2016.
Roadside tree more than 10 metres in height, no flowers sighted. Woody wrinkly fruit with single seed littered the ground.
Calophyllum inophyllum L. [Clusiaceae].
It is Calophyllum inophyllum L., of Calophyllaceae, the dried fruit and leaf are clear; it is often found planted or as an escape on road side
Thank you all. I thought that this was an exotic - good to know (as per wikipedia) that it is native to India though not for as inland a region as Hyderabad.
Calophyllum inophyllum L., it is a star tree, ornamental and medicinal tree, the butter extracted from the fruit is used in cosmetic preparations.
Calophyllum inophyllum known as Punna - പുന്ന - in Malayalam.
Oil extracted from the seeds of this tree was used to light lamps (pre-electrification days!)
The oil also has medicinal properties.

Calophyllum inophyllum L. [Clusiaceae].
Thanks ... I had seen the flowers of this plant which we call ' सुरंगी’ in Marathi. In Konkan and Goa "gajaras' are made of these flowers to wear in hair as they are very fragrant. I have seen it's fruits for first time.

... you are great
in pure telugu -PONNA means visible/looks like
In Sanskrit/ sanskritised Tekugu Ponna means a tree -Calophyllum inophyllum
the plants that grows in salt marshy areas that look like Calophyllum are known as vuppuponna (Vuppu in telugu=salt)
duddu= thick
Ponnagantikura= leaves look like calophyllum ls but small; they are useful for eye health hence ponna+ kanti/ganti
they used the word ponna as a sufix to many plants ; there is no perfect reasoning
So also, but some names are really puzzling for Telugu people also for their origin, the language/regional dialects change with time,
Thank you very much ... for giving clarity about the name ponna, and meanings of some of the prefixes.
I agree some of the prefixes are puzzling, ambiguous. It is possible that they are written / transcribed wrongly.
