Please help me to finalise the id of the attach species of Capparis
Spiny herb, spines near leaf base
Recorded from: Kishtwar Dist, J & K
Elevation: 1050m
Flw: August 2011
I hope Capparis sicula subsp. leucophylla (DC.) Inocencio, D.Rivera, Obón & Alcaraz
(syn: Capparis leucophylla DC.)
... How did you come to the ID? Is the plnt reported in that area. Will you please elaborate some general information etc.to a novice like me regarding this plant.
... Did you find the plant in river beds? High mountains/plains of J&K?
These questions are due to the similarity of a plant observed by me in Spiti valley Capparis spinosa. A variety(Or similar plant) of which is also seen in Western ghats river beds
Thanks ... for prompting me to do some more research. My earlier identification was based on Flora Simlensis, which covers the plants of neighbouring similar area, the Himalayan species, C. leucophylla DC. The correct name for this is now Capparis sicula subsp. leucophylla (DC.) Inocencio, D.Rivera, Obón & Alcaraz
My further investigation led me to find from eFl of Pakistan that C. leucophylla of Collet (Flora Simlensis) is different species not original C. leucophylla DC, and for this Himalayan plant, a new name was given Capparis himalayensis Jafri in Pak. J. For. 6: 197, t. 1. f. lb with map. 1956. So our plant is now to be named as C. himalayensis.
It is different from C. spinosa in posterior sepal forming a large hood not found in C. spinosa. It also has broader larger leaves and smaller spines.
Thanks ... for initiating further insight into this Himalayan plant
I agree with ... its a Capparis himalayensis
The plant is recorded from the elevation about 1050 m on the hanging on hill slopes in shady area near the village Darabshala in J&K.

Though this plant; the only Capparaceae member observed in Ladakh and Spiti valley is also called as Capparis spinosa it appears quite different with larger sized leaves and flowers.
Will it be appropriate to call this as Capparis spinosa var. himalayensis ?
Yes ... you have raised a valid question. Is plant found in lower Himalayas and in Laddakh same?? One more querry

Capparis spinosa at Thicksey -- Leh, Ladakh

Yes ... I saw my collection (Herbarium) of 1971 from Ladakh
It is locally known as Kabra
Thanks ... Nice to know that you have very good Herbarium collection from Ladakh... Do share with us...

Yes ... I have desperately been planing to visit in last few years, because those days with (1970-1975) film cameras, capturing plants was a luxury we could not afford. Age, lack of proper company are coming in way.

Capparis spinosa
The only species of Capparidaceae mentioned in "Flowers of the Himalaya" by Polunin and Stainton
Was observed near Kaza at some places in Spiti valley on way to Dhankar monastery.
A straggling spreading shrubby plant with white flowers.
Lovely pic. It is also known as Cape brush (look at the flowers)
we seem to have found similar flowers - here are my photos of what I think could also be Capparis spinosa. Attachments (2)

Capparis spinosa in FOI is Capparis spinosa subsp. spinosa var. parviflora (Boiss.) Boissier as per A taxonomic revision of the Capparis spinosa group (Capparaceae) from the Mediterraneanto Central Asia Phytotaxa 174 (1): 001–024 (2014) by SILVIO FICI

Thanks ..., I think it should be Capparis spinosa subsp. spinosa var. canescens Cosson because in that paper that is the only species found above 3000 m altitude. The spiny mucronate leaves agree too.
Thanks, ... You are right, I made a mistake while writing.
