This is Calceolaria - Very interestingly it looks like an Orchid but for sure it is not!! This should be Calceolaria or something close from Calceolariaceae, but never knew that Calceolariaceae is found in India. Interestingly, there were three different taxa which were given this name from time to time (Orchidaceae, Scrophulariaceae and Violaceae) but ultimately Scrophulariaceae won the name due to priority of publication and ultimately it was shifted to another family Calceolariaceae. please check for Calceolaria mexicana, commonly called lady's purse ... may be right. It appears to be C. mexicana many thanks for the inputs and identification. May I know the recent name for this Calceolaria sp.? Calceolaria gracilis Kunth ?? I have some confusion: 1. FoI mention Calceolaria gracilis, Calceolaria mexicana and Calceolaria tripartita are same whereas CoL does not say so but the Plant List says yes. 2. Annotated Checklist Nepal says elevation as 1500-2600 m. which matches here. 3. But my post on same subject SK483 26 APR-2017:ID has lower elevation which according to the FOI does not match to the names/ synonyms. Pl. check efi site. I have sorted out this genus here.

The Plant List Calceolaria gracilis Kunth is a synonym of Calceolaria tripartita Ruiz & Pav.It is still not clear to me yet. My one post is at Soureni is at 1700 ft. and the other at Darjeeling is at 7000 ft. That is why I asked to check efi site. It should be Calceolaria tripartita as per images herein & as per the following apparently authentic source: So earlier post from Kalimpong is also same and according to the FoI Calceolaria tripartita, Calceolaria gracilis and Calceolaria mexicana are same. One more doubt. I checked this page (http://www.plantthis.com/plant-information.asp?gardener=38308&tabview=bio&plantSpot=0) and find this has origins in Mexico, Central and South America. If this information is credible, then is this species an exotic and/or invasive species? I think naturalized now in many parts of India. So, just exotic? Is naturalized different from exotic? I think different. Some exotics escape from cultivation into wild and over a period of time spread in large areas. Than they appear as if they are our own wild plants. I think this is called naturalization. I think ... can explain better being a botanist. Oh. Alright. SK1148 27 MAY 2018 : 8 posts by 3 authors.
