VoF Week :: DV :: 01 AUG 12 - 1010 :: Opuntia monacantha along Govind Ghat - Ghangaria trail: Opuntia monacantha Haw. ... (family: Cactaceae)
1 AUG 12
Govind Ghat - Ghangaria trail ... about 6900 ft
I am a bit surprised although never say never
yet never associated valley of flowers a flush meadow like area with opuntia of all things !!
wonders never cease...
Wonder how did the seeds get up there?
and survive the lush climate and vegetation..ain't desert like at all, is it?

Your surprise is valid, ...
Because this plant, my hunch is planted.
Sighted along the Govind Ghat - Ghangaria path.
This path has several chattis (stalls selling foodstuff and other bare necessities to travellers).
These local folk reside near their stalls; my thought: this Opuntia is definitely planted for ornamental purpose.
that was prompt
yes must be planted. but still a surprise that it survived...
of course it was used quite profitably by the east India company in parts of Punjab which is also lush...
the continuous inland customs collecting ploy for salt movements acroos the indian continent ... googling I found that the Prickly pear // opuntia was used in parts of Punjab... where other thorny plants wer e planted as an impentrable hedge a cross Inida ... a british guy has  written a book about it... dont have it now, but read
it when it came out first..
Moxham, Roy (2001). The Great Hedge of India. London: Constable & Robinson. ISBN 1-84119-467-0.
wiki gives me all the salient points I would /anybody would need now...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inland_Customs_Line and a map...
Opuntia planting was limited (for this salt hedge by east India co) was in Punjab...  the hisar district...
so my question now is could it have just spread on its own to the VoF ... though on the map it does look rather far... from the the Hisar district ....
Yes this was planted there near to few houses in jangal chatti

Opuntia seen at Maharashtra Nature Park, Mumbai.
Pictures taken on 10/5/09 & 22/4/13.
Id please.
This looks similar to the Opuntia I had posted earlier from Kenya.
During one of the TAWs at MNP (Tree Appreciation Walks), ... has given the id as Opuntia elatior, Medicinal Plant.
Kindly confirm id.
On searching, in Google search, this looks more like Opuntia monacantha.
Experts kindly verify.
It almost looks like O. monacantha, but I have not yet seen one in bloom...
