Fossil evidence suggests an ancient Laurasian origin. This group of plants spread to Australia and South America via Africa, when these continents were still joined. Ehretia acuminata is a medium to large size tree, occasionally reaching 30 metres in height and a 90 cm in trunk diameter. The bark is a creamy, grey, with vertical fissures. Koda is often easily identified in winter being deciduous and of the characteristic flutings at the base of the trunk. The leaves are alternate and simple, tapering to a tip. Finely toothed. 8 to 13 cm long. Smooth and green on both surfaces, darker above. The midrib and lateral veins are distinct on both sides of the leaf, raised beneath. Flowers are white, sweetly scented, in panicles. Individual flowers are without a stalk, about 4 mm in diameter. Flowers appear in September to November. The fruit matures from January to April, being a yellow or orange drupe, 4 to 5 mm in diameter, containing four seeds. The fruit is edible to humans with a sweet taste. Fruit are eaten by many rainforest birds, including the Lewin's Honeyeater, Rose-crowned Fruit-dove, Brown Cuckoo Dove, Wompoo Fruit Dove and Australasian Figbird. Seed germination is relatively easy. Ensure the flesh is removed from the fruit, and expect rapid germination. Boraginacae To me it seems Ehretia acuminata (Boraginaceae). It is in flowering nowadays (1.4.14) in Pantnagar and Northern India. Thank you ...; it does appear to belong to Boraginaceae and most likely is Ehretia acuminata. The inflorescence is not scorpioid cyme. I don't think it as Boraginaceae. I have seen this but don't remember. Any Celastraceae member? I checked in flora of Delhi. It does resemble the description of Ehretia acuminata; leaves 8-13 cm long, ovate-oblong, sharply serrate margins, Flowers in fascicles, forming large, dense, compound panicles.
ID request - 03082013PC1 : Attachments (4 + 3). 11 posts by 5 authors. It is a tall tree growing in Delhi. Flowers in March-April and fruits form in May. the tree looks like Vitex negundo-'Notchi' in Malayalam. Please send the close ups of the leaves, flowers and fruits, as the details are not very clear in the photographs sent by you. Nevertheless, the arrangement of the leaves, as such, does not suggest Vitex negundo-'Notchi' in malayalam. Perhaps the clear picture might reveal its true identity. It may not be Vitex negundo as the tree is a very tall tree (reason why I could not get close ups of leaves) with simple leaves and white coloured flowers. I will try to get some more photographs of the tree; unfortunately it is not flowering now. Please also check with Ehretia acuminata if it produce yellow fruits in cluster during May-June and white flowers in March April. Attaching a picture of flowering twig for comparison. Recently I saw a couple of these trees in the compound of a public building and guess them to be Ehretia species, most probably E. acuminata. Please advise.
