Boraginaceae Week:: Adenocaryum coelestinum:  These Paracaryopsis; Adelocaryum and Cynoglossum are very confusing.......
Frequent name changes. Genus names not uniform in diff books. I never liked them because of this.
The flowers are beautiful though and typical Boraginaceae appearance.
On observing ... pictures of this species I dare to call this as Adenocaryum coelestinum.
Pl. validate

.. agree I am finding this task .... (Adelocaryum and Cynoglossum are very confusing.)) confusing too...

Had sent this query in a personal mail to ..., who forwarded it to then IndianTreePix.
... thus this ID request is incidentally my first query !!!
... had resurfaced it once ... did not get any response, possibly for want of details.
Two of my flickr friends - Tony suggested it to be a member of Boraginaceae, few months back ... and recently, Tanay Bose says it must be Thyrocarpus glochidiatus.
Earnest request for comment(s).

I tried it hard to fix, the outside rim with seems to be unique. To me it does not match with link
Doesn't it looks like some Paracaryopsis sp.  (Could as well be  Paracaryopsis lambertiana). Just a wild guess..
... a very good lead, ... Was thinking about it, but the size beats me .. This may indeed turn out to be P. lambertiana.

more than convinced that this plant must be the Lambert's paracaryopsis,  Paracaryopsis lambertiana ... locally known as हिरवी निसुर्डी hirvi nisurdi
It must be the later phase of the plant i.e. Between flowering and fruiting. So the classic colours of the flowers are not visible here. Also the full fledged fruits are probably yet to to get developed. Many plants in such phases get us bolded out.
Thanks for the interesting thread.
I took time to answer this, because in the past I have indicated that the identification of the genus Paracaryopsis should not be done without fruit characters together with flowers and good literature should be checked. (thrice if I remember correctly)
Any way, I troubled ..., to write me the key and description from Cooke's Bombay Presidency flora, which acc to me is the most
complete.
OK So the key to Paracaryopsis (Paracaryum in old literature including Cooke) species is :
1. Nutlets glochidiate
2. Stem red, flowers pale blue with a darker centre ---- P. coelestinum

2. Stem green, flowers dark blue uniform in colour without a dark centre ...... P. malabaricum
1. Nutlets NOT glochidiate ---------- P. lambertianum ( it was separated at times as genus Mattiastrum, but not by recent ideas)
Description of fruit of P. lambertianum: Nutlets usually 2, (2 others suppressed) reaching 1/2 by 7/16 in, broadly ovate, flattened, "not
glochidiate on the margins or faces. margin entire, flat, extending in the same plane" as the face or very slightly curved upwards.
As you can see from the key, the plant in picture is certainly not Paracaryopsis lambertiana, as the glochidiate margin of fruit is so nicely seen.
P. lambertianum is strikingly different in this character although matching flowers of Paracaryopsis coelestinum. The key in the Flora of
Maharashtra dicot 2 is WRONG, but the description is correct, although very sketchy. I have seen this species and its non glochidiate winged
fruits in field (Gaganbavda ghat, Kolhapur and Kori Fort, near Ambavane/Lonavala) and also checked in herbarium of BSI Pune circle.
SO the plant in picture is not Paracaryopsis lambertiana. As for what it is, I cannot see the flowers clearly, a back view is not useful at all, and the size appears smaller than Paracaryopsis, but size does not matter so much. It can very well be a small poorly nourished plant of P. coelestinum as it cannot be P. lambertianum or P. malabaricum. But perhaps one should also characters of Cynoglossum, a genus fairly close in general look of Paracaryopsis although the fruits of Paracaryopsis are fairly different than Cynoglossum.
If I visit Pune, I will try to get a picture from herbarium and circulate the fruit picture so that there is no misidentification in future.
Web also has some new paper by R. Mill on this genus, but I have not been able to access it.

Many many thanks for providing clarity, ...
From your review, for sure, the ID is not P. lambertianum or P. malabaricum
The attached photos is all that are available for the ID query ... BUT the key elements are missing, thus it may not be possible to know the ID to the species level.
The fruit in the photo appears fairly clear, however not sure whether clear enough for knowing it to be Paracaryopsis OR Cynoglossum OR another grenus.

... here is a excerpt of response from ... (Departamento de Botânica, Faculdade de Farmácia)
................................
... Regarding the identifications, I could disagree a little in some pictures of P. lambertiana. I  would say that these pictures belong to Adelocaryum colestinum (=P.coelestina), mainly for the glochidiate nutlet. For instance: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/2977893065/ ...
...............................
..., just as you hunch, this plant turns out to be Paracaryopsis coelestina ... the current and accepted name is Adelocaryum colestinum.

Hello friends back from a 2 day trip to Mysore. What is the ID of this herb.
... species of Paracaryopsis (could be P. coelestina)
This may not be Paracaryopsis coelestina because the size of flowers here is too small.
... the flowers here seemed larger for P. lambertiana, but it could be a possibility ... not sure.
Is there any recent nomenclatureal change in this?
Reply from another thread:
"Agree. This is Adelocaryum coelestinum [the Common Hill Borage]. Sending one of my photographs for comparison."

DV :: 23APR11 - 0310 :: small white borage: 13 posts by 3 authors. 4 images.
Small boraginaceae herb standing about 2 ft., slightly woody at base.
Flower about 8 - 10 mm, all white.
Leaves, about 25 mm long X 20 mm wide ... texture, venation reminds me of Cynoglossum / Adelocaryum species.
Habitat: along ghat road.
Viewed: April 23, 2011 at 3.10pm IST ... 15.430536, 74.286233, 2278 ft ... on Google Maps ... NH4A, Anmod Ghat, Karnataka.

Sure looks like the Common Hill Borage [Paracaryopsis coelestina], but this is not supposed to be the flowering season.
Many thanks ... flowering at this time of year is indeed a surprise.
All aspects: plant, leaf, flower seem small for Paracaryopsis coelestina ... there were no larger basal leaves either ... unless growing in diminutive form for some reason.
To me, the inflorescence looks different from regular sight of Paracaryopsis coelestina (syn of Adelocaryum coelestinum) OR Cynoglossum zeylanicum (syn. of Cynoglossum furcatum).
Waiting for comments.
Would like to correct the dimension of flower ... it is just about 5 - 7 mm and not 8 - 10 mm as put earlier.
Matches with images in your other thread (which has been identified as Adelocaryum coelestinum (Lindl.) Brand)
Thanks ... The habit of this plant is unlike the normally taller standing common hill borage, Adelocaryum coelestinum. Comments from those familiar with Adelocaryum / Cynoglossum plants will be helpful.
May be due to offseason habit & flowering. Pl. see your your other thread
Thanks ..., will revise notes. I assume we have ruled out Cynoglossum.
Thanks, ... I think fruits are different in Cynoglossum species found in South India. Still I will recheck it when I do insertion of images at these pages shortly.
‎Species of none of the Cynoglossum species (pl. see comparative images) in efi matches with this.
Thanks very much, ... for all the efforts. Will soon revise my notes at flickr.

Boraginaceae Week :: For ID :: 12NOV11 - 0145 :: some species of Cynoglossum ?: 15 posts by 5 authors. 6 images.
ID please
Place: near Matheran, Maharashtra ... about 2033 ft asl
Time: November 12, 2011 around 1.45pm
Habit: herb
Habitat: mountain slope, mixed-deciduous forest
Plant height: about a 40 - 50 cm high
Flower: about 3 mm across
I just google for Cynoglossum and found Cynoglossum furcatum to be similar... though not sure, but an attempt
Cynoglossum furcatum is now known as C. zeylanicum. Yes it is closest match, but the marginal rim of nutlets is very prominent in ... plant.
Yes, ... Hope the nutlets help someone who is familiar with Cynoglossum and related genera to help in resolving this ID.
My guess: these nutlets are just about 4 - 5 mm across.
These nutlets look similar to that of Adelocaryum coelestinum.
Matches with images at Adelocaryum coelestinum (Lindl.) Brand
Thanks ... To me, the habit of this plant is unlike the normally taller standing common hill borage, Adelocaryum coelestinum. Comments from those familiar with Adelocaryum / Cynoglossum plants will be helpful.

Does any other species other than Adelocaryum coelestinum (Lindl.) Brand has similar fruits ?
Pl. also see comparative images at Adelocaryum
My confidence was based on going through all the posts of Adelocaryum in efi.
Thanks ..., I will revise my notes. I assume we have ruled out Cynoglossum.

Just follow this link to see the photo:

To avoid confusion I am attaching these four pictures for Identification-
Location: Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Maharashtra
Habitat: moist deciduous forest. Taken on 25/10/08.
Some feedback from ...
"reminds me of sundew family ... it looks insectivorous !!! "

Looks like insectivorous plant.  Drosera species?  Need to check
isnt it the insectivourous plant?
here the leaf lamina has a hinge like like arrengement to fold at the midrib, so the insect if seats on the lamina is caught by folding the leaf.
such plants normally get their requirement of nitrogen from the insect caught
something like venus fly trap or sundew plant.
exact name of this plant is in my heart not comming on pc??????
I had not commented on this earlier; one of my flickr contacts says this plant could be a member of Boraginaceae.
I did some vigorous search, but could not sight any plant similar to this one yet.
Then I think my search faded !!!
Adelocaryum coelestinum
Yes ... I have already noted this ID in my notes; perhaps with help of some other post carrying more views.
