25102011MC01:  Help needed in identifying this climber with pretty flowers. Is it a Thunbergia?
Place: Yercaud
Date: 2/08/2011
Altitude: 1500 metres
Habitat: cultivated
Habit: climber
Approximate size/height: 8 metres
Leaf size: 12 cm, Compound leaf
Flower Diameter: 5 cm
Length of Flower: 7 cm
Flower Colour: Mauve
I may be wrong, but it does not appear to be Thunbergia. Perhaps some member of Bignoniaceae.
I can also see pinnate leaves, unless they belong to some other plant. Also the calyx is truncate in Thunburgia, I can see lobes here.
This is Tecoma ricasoliana
I think yes http://www.pbase.com/treebz65/image/47708982
Yes the plant in the pictures is not Thunbergia sp and Tecoma ricasoliana is the correct id for me too.
The photo matches T. ricasoliana on the web. I found that the plantlist.org has this as Pandorea ricasoliana.
Tecoma ricasoliana is now correctly known as Podranea ricasoliana (Tanfani) Sprague
Once a plant is correctly identified accepted name can always be found. Thanks for checking it out.
Incidentally, could somebody guide me as to how to differentiate between P. ricasoliana and P. brycei. The flowers look rather similar.
... here are few differences
P. brycei: Leaflets 9-11, lanceolate to ovate; corolla abruptly campanulate in upper part, pale pink marked with red, throat yellow, 4 cm long; panicle many-flowered
P. ricasoliana: Leaflets 7-9, ovate; corolla pale pink striped with red, funnel shaped, 5 cm long; panicle loose
Perhaps better view of leaf can help

Please ID this small ornamental herbaceous plant with pink flowers. Sorry about the poor quality of picture. Photo was taken in Sri Lanka in Sep 2112.
This should be Podranea species.
Podranea ricasoliana or Tecoma ricasoliana

Please help identify this plant, 7-8 ft, planted in garden at Tembhurni, Maharashtra.
Photographed 01Dec13.
It is Podranea ricasoliana Sprague

After of lot of search on net, I could not find any site which gives differences between Podranea ricasoliana & Podranea brycei. There are confusing pictures all over including Dave's garden & Toptropicals.
On checking, GRIN (I find it better as far as naming of ornamental plants is concerned), Podranea brycei (N. E. Br.) Sprague is listed as Podranea ricasoliana.
In WCSP, Podranea ricasoliana (Tanfani) Sprague is stated to be widely cultivated as an ornamental, while no such mention has been made for Podranea brycei (N.E.Br.) Sprague.
PlantZAfrica states that as it is virtually impossible to tell them apart when seen growing together many botanists regard them as the same species.
In view of all this I am taking all postings at efi as Podranea ricasoliana
