commonly known as: busy lizzy, Japanese balsam, sultan's balsam • Manipuri: খুজং লৈ khujang lei

Native to: e Africa (Tanzania to Mozambique); widely naturalized; also cultivated as ornamental;
Widely cultivated in warm and temperate zones of whole world, even on Pacific islands. Naturalized/invasive in warm and humid climates, occasionally escaping also in temperate Europe;

Note big flowers, spur thicker in Impatiens hawkeri than in I. walleriana and leaves narrower than in I. walleriana. Many varieties have red veins or red lower side of leaves.

Succulent perennial herb usually leass than 50 cm tall, branches mostly forming a flat top, glabrous, rarely pubescent at tips of branches; leaves alternate or upper opposite; petiole 2-5 cm long with 1 or more stipitate glands, blade ovate to elliptic-oblong, 4-8 cm long, crenate-denticulate, base cuneate and decurrent on petiole, apex acute to acuminate; flowers solitary or in racemes on 3-5 cm long peduncles, in variety of colours, 3-5 cm across; bracts linear; lateral sepals greenish or whitish, 3-7 mm long; lower sepal with curved up to 5 cm long spur; upper petal obovate or ob-cordate, cuspidate, cristate on back; lateral united petals with obpvate basal lobes; capsule oblique-fusiform, 15-22 mm long, glabrous.

There are numerous shades starting from white, pink, red, purple to violet, there are double forms, there are big and small flowered forms, there is some variability in leaf shape and color, but the species is heavily selected and hybridized to obtain new varieties in last fifty years;

One of the most popular and hardy species best for forming colourful ground covers as it grows very low;

Garden Flower for ID : Nairobi,Kenya : 110812 : AK-1: Pictures taken on 20 & 21 st Jan,2009 in Nairobi, Kenya.
A small, cultivated garden plant.
Leaves suggest some Balsam species.
Kindly confirm id.
Looks like Impatiens walleriana double form.- Link

... is right
its the hybrid double impatiens, the leaves and the flower buds give it away...
and ... is also right... our regular garden balsam is an impatiens so...this is a balsam.....:)
this hybrid is a bit less hardy then its parents, still is (was by now) quite popular as houseplant or partly sunny locations in borders in gardens in northern climes... in summer of course, and had many colors..as you showed ...
But in recent times fallen off the favorite list since gets attacked mercilessly by the downy mildew... not a desirable event in the garden esp if one has prized roses and if one grows veggies...its devastating.... so most good quality nurseries did not carry it this year....
thanks for giving all the information about this garden plant.
I haven't come across it in India as yet though.
good that it did not go to india, would play havoc with the monsoon and spread of the mildew... they do not need one more problem

I suppose you have mixed up more than one species
I have always been confused about these 2 plants I used to think these are 2 names of the same plant. I will be grateful if someone clears this for me
All these plants looks like different color forms of I. walleriana.

Kindly id these ornamental balsam seen in Kandy, Sri Lanka during a visit in Nov,2010.
First two - I. walleriana, third - most probably I. hawkeri
Thanks for the ids.
I am totally confused between walleriana & hawkeri.
So decided to post my pictures for validation and correct ids.
This should help
Impatiens hawkeri                                                      Impatiens walleriana
1. Lower leaves opposite, upper in whorls of 3   1. Lower leaves alternate, upper alternate or opposite
2. leaves 10-15 cm long, somewhat lanceolate  2. Leaves 4-10 cm long, mostly ovate
3, margin sharply serrate                                   3. Margin crenate-denticulate
4. leaf base not decurrent on petiole                  4. leaf base decurrent on petiole
5. flowers 5-7 cm across?                                  5. Flowers 3-5 cm across
6. Lower sepal with spur 7 cm long                    6. Lower sepal with spur 5 cm long

Impatiens hawkeri has also lower sepal shallowly navicular with thicker spur, whereas I. walleriana almost flat lower sepal and filiform spur.
In most cases I. hawkeri has bigger flowers than I. walleriana, however variability of cultivated species is sometimes beyond recognition...
As I wrote in my earlier posts, I hawkeri was recently hybridized with some other more heat and sun tolerant taxa, making things worse for botanists.
If you have access to JSTOR, you can try
Grey-Wilson C. 1980. Impatiens in Papuasia. Studies in Balsaminaceae: 1. Kew Bull. 34(4): 661 - 668.

Further to the differentiation between I. walleriana and I. hawkeri, could you also guide us towards further differentiating I. pulcherrima from the earlier 2?
I never seen I. pulcherrima by myself...
However, I found a picture, where this plant is depicted with greenish horn on the upper petal. Link here: http://www.finerareprints.com/print_detail.html?stock_no=21226
Can anybody familiar with I. pulcherrima confirm this fact?

Impatiens walleriana Hook. f.
Balsaminaceae
Loc.: Itanagar, Arunachal pradesh
Note: An ornamental
Without any doubts - I. walleriana.
By the way, I see I. walleriana is rather common in cultivation in India, especially in urban areas

An ornamental, cultivated plant with a white flower seen in Nairobi, Kenya during visit on 1/2/2009.
Id please.

There is a little problem...
Were all the flowers of this shape?
Or is it only freshly opened I. walleriana?
It was the only flower seen, not completely opened.
Captured in half blooming stage.
So probably just opening I. walleriana

A small cultivated, potted, garden plant with White flowers.
For Species id please.

Impatiens walleriana (white cv)?

Thanks for the id.
Yes !
impatiens hybrid not otherwise classifiable. larger flowers like what i think it is in your picture, … they are descendants from new guinea impatiens like Impatiens hawker.
but cant tell, unless leaves and many flowers are studied, strictly. by now the whole world recognizes this humble flower because of hybridizers have made them popular and cheap to grow by the thousands for large lush colorful borders esp in temperate climate summers.
interesting link
and our own indian nursery trade groups must also be hybridizing them, yet they do no seem to want to publish their results.
May be that's what you have photographed
