A large shrub or small tree, with white corky bark, branches stout, grooved. Leaves shortly petioled, 10-35 cm long, elliptic or elliptic lanceolate, coriaceous, glabrous above, densely white-tomentose beneath, petioles dilated at base. Heads 2-2.5 cm long, in large, bracteolate, tomentose corymbs. Involucral bracts nearly flat, inner linear-lanceolate, acute, outer shorter. Corolla white. Achenes slender, 0.4-0.6 cm, densely silky. Pappus 1.2 cm long, rigid, pale yellow.

This is the only tree (though a small one) of Asteraceae family reported from our nearby areas. This is most probably Leucomeris spectabilis D. Don, Prodr. 170, 1825; Kanjilal, For. Flora 302.

This tree flowers during March-May but we missed the flowering this time. Shot from Dakpathar-Bairatkhai road, May 2012. I hope the identification is correct. Kindly validate/rectify the identification....

I am agree with Leucomeris spectabilis
I think we had clicked it while on trip to Naininital-Almora-kausani, it was growing along roadsides in Chakauri. I am attaching same for confirmation.

Gochnatia spectabilis (D.Don) Less. (=Leucomeris spectabilis D.Don) represent tree habit in otherwise herbaceous family Asteraceae.
It is a small tree reaching up to 3m with stem diameter reaching to 6 inches (as I have seen).
It is restricted to Central and Western Himalaya only reaching to 2000m altitude.
Unfortunately, I do not have pictures to clearly show tree habit but hope to get soon in this season.
Here photographed near Naini Tal, Uttarakhand
Thanks for this upload. I think we got it at Chakauri while on visit to Nainital, Ranikhet and Almora. I will upload for validation.
