Annual or biennial herb with paniculately branched stem; lower leaves linear-lanceolate, undivided ot pinnately lobed, base sagittate, clasping, upper leaves undivided, progressively smaller; heads blue, in panicles; florets 12-18, involucre 9-10 mm in flower, up to 16 mm in fruit; involucre bracts purplish at tip, out shorter than inner; achene brown, body 4-5 mm long with 3-5 ribs on each side, beak filiform 3 mm long; pappus 6-7 mm long.
