This plant attracts butterflies and other insects. A Crab Spider had successfully caught a Grey Pansy butterfly that came to feed. On the ground below i noticed a wing of a Great Eggfly that too must have fallen prey to the lurking Crab spider. Leaves are alternate, sessile, linear oblong. Leafy bracts, Outer bracts linear lanceolate with very long recurved bristles, inner bracts longer than outer bracts with shorter bristles. Ref:Flowers of Sahyadri, Vol 1 pg: 186. by S. Ingalhalikar. It appears to be Tricholepis glaberrima DC. Plant for ID SMP2- 30/12/2010: An Asteraceae member shrub. 5-6 feet tall. Leaves lanceolate sessile hairy. Observed near Ambolgad on a plateau Rajapur Konkan. This is the Western Hill Thistle [Tricholepis amplexicaulis]. I feel this is Tricholepis glaberimma. Fair enough, but Tricholepis glaberrima is a smalll annual herb 50 - 100 cms tall, whereas the plant in question here is a shrub. I would personally go with t. glaberrima because Leaves are not amplexicaul at base involucre bracts are shorter and erect and not recurved Heads look smaller in size https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/B-9znrUUNmLzNsIcUjWmTg https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/UST9-L96TRdUGtV4J80LXA http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/3012265253/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/4181290838/ I also feel it may be Tricholepis glaberrima only.
