Native to: Himalaya (India), n Pakistan
Literature indicates that it is not known in wild but cultivated in Western Himalaya. The original wild populations were known to exist in J&K and Himachal Pradesh. In Uttarakhand it is cultivated in many places and also introduced in forest nurseries.

I hope I will get validation/correction of id for this species shot from valley of flowers area...

In my views it is Sausurea costus, it is on the way when we cross the small bridge from Gangaria and turned to the way Valley of Flowers and seems to be planted.
It is S. costus (= S. lappa) the costus root plant.
Literature indicates that it is not known in wild but cultivated in Western Himalaya. The original wild populations were known to exist in J&K and Himachal Pradesh.
