Very well illustrated photographs

VoF Week :: DV :: 02 AUG 12 - 0128 :: Saussurea ¿ costus ? at Valley of Flowers: 2 AUG 12
Valley of Flowers ... about 11400 ft
Habitat: sloping meadow
Habit: herb about 1 m high; flower about 1 - 1.5 inch across.
... apologies, this is the only photo.

This not Saussurea costus, it seemms to me Saussurea hypoleuca.
Yes ... is right. This is Saussurea auriculata (DC.) Sch.- Bip. an accepted name while S. hypoleuca is a synonym.
Thank you very much ... for this ID.
Was confident with my ID for upload at efi thread ... hopefully that is correct too, which shows the flower to grow with an extraordinarily long stock.

I photographed this plant on my previous hike near Snowline. It was growing next to a large cluster of Rhododendron campanulatum. I might go again tomorrow to see if there is any further development. Please help identify it.

..., as usual was right in advising to check for a Saussurea species. After his advice, I checked and found that my plant was likely to be Saussurea auriculata and I went up to the mountains where I had found it to see the mature inflorescence. Finding the nodding dark purple flower heads confirmed the initial ID. Please advise.
