According to Plants of the World Online, Echinops sphaerocephalus L. is not distributed in India at all! I presume the pics on FOI were clicked in the wild. pictures at FOI are certainly from wild. Whether spines conspicuously rising out of flower head is a feature differentiating E. echinatus from another species, or is just a variation - needs checking. The Echinops sphaerocephalus L. arose with my post of Echinops for validation at facebook. From the discussion, it looked like the species is found in north-western parts of India. Hope we reach to correct ID. I am certain about it as I created the page Echinops sphaerocephalus after detailed search. Pl. check references herein.
