Sphaeranthus ¿ africanus ? : Attachments (2).  5 posts by 3 authors.
Would like to know whether this is Sphaeranthus africanus OR yet S. indicus.
Place: Vaghbil, Thane.
Date: 28 NOV 09
Habitat: near creek
Given below are the relevant key characters from Flora of India:
a. Stems not winged ---> Sphaeranthus amaranthoides
b. Stems winged:
b-i) wings entire; flower-heads <1 cm across ---> S. africanus
b-ii) wings toothed; heads up to 2.5 cm across; leaves single-dentate ---> S. senegalensis
So, your plant seems to be S. senegalensis, pl. confirm.
In S. indicus, the leaves are double-dentate.
The wings of stem are clearly dentate, and looking at the distribution this seems to be S. indicus. S. senegalensis has distribution only in East Maharashtra. But S. africanus is also common along the shore.
... will try to get more (and also closer) views when I get back to the creek side of my neighbourhood ... may help in ID better.
... during yesterday's visit to the creek side, saw them all in purple.
Concluding them to be Sphaeranthus indicus.
