In the Tamil tradition of Siddha medicine the plant is used for many diseases . In ayurvedic medicine, the leaf extract is considered a powerful liver tonic, rejuvenate, and especially good for the hair. A black dye obtained from Eclipta prostrata is used for dyeing hair and tattooing. Eclipta prostrata also has traditional external uses, such as for athlete's foot, eczema and dermatitis, and on the scalp to address hair loss; the leaves have been used in the treatment of scorpion stings. It is used as anti-venom against snakebite in China and Brazil (Mors, 1991). It is reported to improve hair growth and color (Kritikar and Basu 1975 and Chopra et al. 1955)

eclipta prostata: eclipta prostata of asteraceae family
been seeing it in flower for the past couple of weeks at alibaug

... taking opportunity to put this trivia : Eclipta prostrata has one of its synonyms as Eclipta erecta
Not a big deal ... Many species are supposed to have stable (genetically fixed) variants under different ecological conditions. These are better known as ecotypes, although some call them varieties or subspecies (different areas), and some enthusiastic persons giving them ranks of independent species. It is common
to have erect and prostrate types in many species including our Euphorbia hirta. In fact this concept of ecotypes was developed simultaneously in Europe (Hieracium vulgatum) and California (Potentilla fruticosa) around 1822.

Forgot to mention, prostrate types generally develop under areas of intense grazing and trampling, erect types under undisturbed areas.
totally agree with Sirji, i observed that the plant growing near water logged area or near lake, are prostrate and plant growing singly in the garden or on the road side are erect and also smaller in size..
Eclipta prostrata Eclipta alba Eclipta erecta are syn of this plant common called bhringraja
hepato-splenomegaly and associated disorders, elephantiasis, inflammations, gastric disorders, anorexia, worm infestation, skin diseases, wounds, ulcers, ophthalmic disorders, heafache, hypertension, strangury, leprosy, pruritus, fever, jaundice, toothache and earache,  Seed- aphrodisiac, promote hair growth, stimulate the functions of liver, heal and clean ulcers and increase eye sight.
Eclipta prostrata reminds me of our visit to Rudarpur on way to Nainital. We stayed for the night there while on way to Nainital at our cousin's place.  Nearly half of the family went out early in the morning to seek an important herbal medicine from a a guru in a distant village. In the afternoon when they came back, I asked them about it, and the lady of the house told me that guru had given them a herb brought from a deep forest. She opened a knot of her dupatta and showed me the plant. I asked her to come along and showed her a number of plants of Eclipta prostrata growing along the sewer drain outside their wall. She was both astonished and happy.
Correct, the most of the Bhringraj we saw during our Ayurvedic herbal botany training in Gujarat Ayurvedic Univ. many years ago ..were growing near waste water pipes, esp if they leaked.... yuk... Bringraj grows best with drip irrigation , slow but steady round the clock water supply that drains away.. I tried it in my balcony with an old shirodhara gazzette one summer/fall... in your story... better the guru bring the herbs from the supposedly clean forest ...
but, if she ate those sewer drain water watered herb, she would be loaded up with toxins...
then she would be in deep fire having rescued herself from the frying pan of having to walk to the guru...

Thank you very much Sir for all these informations on this plant.
It helped me in various ways -
1) Books are of little use : while going through the text book 'Plant Groups' for the ID of this plant i noticed that the Bengali name given to this plant was mentioned as KESUTTI. But your mail confirms that it is KESHUT, the name we are familiar with.
2) Very little info on medicinal properties : i was only aware of its use in hair care. Didn't know its other uses.
3) Vernacular names : now i know that KESHUT & BHRINGRAJ are names of the same plant.
Though i didn't know how a KESHUT plant looks like but i heard people saying that it was good for hair. Some hair-care oil available in beauty salons also contain BHRINGRAJ. Don't know if other aurvadic preparations for some other ailments are available in the market.
Forwarding link to my old write up on Eclipta at University of Purdue new crop website.
You can get info on recent work at this link
Is it confirmed Eclipta prostrata? Please let me know what is the identification for it . I will appreciate it.
No doubt about it !

Looks like larger form of Eclipta alba
I agree with ... id: Eclipta alba (accepted name: E. prostrata).
Note: As per the Flora of Taiwan (http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=100&taxon_id=111273), it somewhat matches with E. zippeliana, but it is now a synonym of E. prostrata (http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/gcc-23384).
I too agree with ... and ...

Herb ID request - RK22 - 17-Oct-2012: A short herb from Mumbai, it is around 1 feet high and has attractively patterned leaves.
I hope Eclipta prostrata with viral infection.
I found on the net that this yellowing is most likely due to infection with Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (also a begomovirus apparaently) and not the old idea that it was a begomovirus infecting specifically eclipta alba or e. prostrata.. Does this sound true?
http://www.ndrs.org.uk/article.php?id=011039
and describing the new delhi tomato leaf curl virus is at http://www.ndrs.org.uk/article.php?id=011039
What is most important to me as a gardener is that the virus is apparantly transmitted by the whitefly... !!!
Yes ... Yes this 2006 report is cited at a couple of places. Besides cucumber mosaic virus also infects this plant (Tewari and Tripathi, 2003).
http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/files/regs/imports/plants/coco-peat/ra-eclipta-prostrata.pdf
Thanks a million ... this is really fascinating. I never imagined that the attrative patterns on the leaves are due to some viral infection.

Is this Eclipta prostrata ?
Location : Chennai outskirts
Date :05.09.2019
Elevation : 23 mts.
Habitat :Urban garden
Habit : Herbal weed

I hope you're right

yes though the leaf in 4th picture 6011 is a shape I have no memory of ever seeing in bhringraj but I never say never.
what I would appreciate from you is: if you can find this same patch and uproot a couple of the plants that have this shape leaf, and photograph the whole plant, roots and all,
then you can demonstrate if this is a lower (older ) leaf etc. it would be fantastic
Thanks for the valuable suggestion from ... and I followed it at once. I uprooted the whole plant to find out a small Tridax procumbens plant among them.
The 4th picture 6011 is a Tridax leaf and can I withdraw it from the set ? and how ?
My sincere thanks to ... for pointing out the mistake.

good, … and I am impressed. you followed that up quick, good and am glad you found the intermingled species.
