Acmella uliginosa

Marsh Para Cress ;

Annual decumbent herb with narrowly ovate to elliptic leaves, cuneate towards base, dentate margin; heads radiate; cone-shaped, especially when mature, 5-8 mm high, 4-6 mm in diam.; receptacle 4-6 mm high; ray florets 4-7, yellow-orange; disc florets more than 70, 4-merous, yellow-orange; achenes 1.2-1.8 mm long, black, margin ciliate with straight hairs; pappus bristles 2.

A. ciliata mainly differs from A. uliginosa is broader head and rounded to cordate leaf base.

Spilanthes calva is now known as Acmella calva, it is mostly with discoid heads but if with radiate heads, it can be easily separated from A. uliginosa by its pentamerous disc florets as against tetramerous in A. uliginosa.

A. paniculata has discoid head not rayed heads. In India, we have two species with rayed heads, viz. Acmella ciliata, & A. uliginosa and four species with discoid heads, viz. A. paniculata, A. calva, A radicans and A. oleracea. Another new species of Acmella with discoid heads from KERALA, INDIA is Acmella ghoshinis Sheela sp.nov. (Syn. Spilanthes ghoshinis Sheela sp.nov).

Acmella from Hyderabad ID011212CS:  I have been seeing posts of various Acmella species in the past week. This species of Acmella which was IDied as Acmella uliginosa. Is the identification correct.
Habit: herb
Distribution: on rice field bunds
Place Hyderabad
Acmella uliginosa
Have known this plant for many years as Spilanthus calva. Dr. Almeida's book calls it Spilanthes clava [the clava part may be a typo]. It is a weed, a native of Moluccas [Maluku Islands].
There is no mention of Acmella uliginosa in any of the following :
- Cooke's 'Flora of Bombay Presidency'.
- Dr.Almeida's 'Fora of Maharashtra'.
- Yadav & Sardesai's 'Flora of Kolhapur District'.
- Bhagat, Shimpale & Deshmukh's 'Flora of Baramati'.
Have this plant on my property at Shahapur. Sending a few photographs.
Kindly refer to my mail in the forum where I have tried to solve this confusion
There is presently no Indian species under genus Spilanthes, all have been transferred to Acmella.
Spilanthes calva is now known as Acmella calva, it is mostly with discoid heads but if with radiate heads, it can be easily separated from A. uliginosa by its pentamerous disc florets as against tetramerous in A. uliginosa.
In ... above photographs besides ray florets, disc florests are clearly tetramerous and hence A. uliginosa.
In your last photograph also disc florets appear to be tetramerous but you may confirm from a better.
Thank you Sir for the clarification as I am using this flowering weed in my ecological engineering studies and have identified it as Acmella uliginosa I was getting a little worried. Should have posted earlier, but its been mad time at office and I am unable to keep up with my interests
Thank you ... for your detailed explanation. Was not aware of this new classification. Much obliged

Acmella for ID : Pali,Maharashtra : 251212 : AK-1:  A small herb seen growing wild at a farm in Pali, Maharashtra on 23/11/2012.
Kindly id the species.
It is Acmella paniculata,
I hope it is Acmella uliginosa (Sw.) Cass. not A. paniculata. Because A. paniculata has discoid head not rayed heads. In India, we have two species with rayed heads , viz. Acmella ciliata, & A. uliginosa and four species with discoid heads, viz. A. paniculata, A. calva, A radicans and A. oleracea.
