Phoenix loureiroi
(common name mountain date palm[2] ) is a species of flowering plant in the palm family, indigenous to southern Asia, from the southern islands of the Philippines, India, southern Bhutan, Taiwan to Hong Kong.[3]
It occurs in deciduous and evergreen forests and in clear terrain from sea level to 1,500 m altitude.[4]
The species is named after João de Loureiro; it was originally written by Kunth as "loureirii", but this is an error to be corrected to loureiroi under the provisions of the ICBN.[3]
P. loureiroi contains solitary and clustering plants with trunks from 1-4 m high and 25 cm in width, usually covered in old leaf bases. The leaves vary to some degree but usually reach 2 m in length with leaflets wide at the base and sharply pointed apices. The leaflets emerge from the rachis at varying angles creating a stiff, plumose leaf.

The fruit is a single-seeded drupe, bluish-black when ripe, produced on erect, yellow inflorescences, usually hidden within the leaf crown. The species is noted for its variability in different habitats.[4]

I have doubts in the binomial of this plant.
Is this Phoenix loureirii Kunth var. humilis (Becc.) S.C. Barrow or Phoenix humilis Royle.?
Which one is the recent & accepted name?
Mature stems reach up to 0.90 metre in height and these are found on high elevations [1000 - 1500msl].

Date/Time- 07 Mar 2010 12:00pm

Location- Place, Altitude, GPS- Satyamangalam RF; Eastern Ghats. ca. 1400msl

Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- wild

Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb- short tree

Height/Length- 0 to 1m

Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- 1 - 1.2m length; pinnately compound

Inflorescence Type/ Size- panicle; 20 - 30cm length(along with rachis)

Flowers Size/ Colour/ Calyx/ Bracts- 0.3-0.5cm across; tepals cream coloured

Fruits Type/ Shape/ Size Seeds- berry; on maturity is black

Other Information like Fragrance, Pollinator, Uses etc.- no fragrance

The leaves are collected extensively for making broomsticks and thatches. Fruits are eaten by animals; the pith of the plant(mature) is eaten by local people.

Stems with leaf bases, peduncle not flattened, elongate, fruits black. These features lead to P. lourierii Kunth.
Thank you sir, any differentiating character for Phoenix humilis?
I think this is wild sps. commonly seen in hills
According to Eflora of Pakistan P. humilis Royle is synonym of Phoenix loureirii Kunth which should be the correct name .
It is differentiated from other common wild species P. sylvestris as follows
Phoenix loureirii.....Plants less than 4 m tall, 20-30 cm in diam., leaves 20-55 cm long, fruit 1-2 cm long
Phoenix sylvestris...Plants 8-15 m tall, 35-50 cm in diam., 1-4 m long, fruit 2.5 cm long
The nomenclature of Phoenix sylvestris is a difficult nut for me over 2 years. This species was originally proposed by Linneanus as Elate sylvestris and later Roxburgh transferred this to Phoenix viz. P. sylvestris. The type was based on Rheede's Kattu eethanl in his Hortus Malabaricus. But Roxburgh described another plant instead in his Flora Indica. This made the problem so complecated. Now we are going to raise an epitype for the species and I do hope we can solve the mystery shortly. Until then we can silent about this issue.
Could any of you kindly send me the Kannada name for this Phoenix loureirii Kunth var. humilis (Becc.) S.C. Barrow species?
Hindi: Thakal, khajuri; Kumaon: Konda, thankal; Kan: sunichil; Oryia: bukhor, kojiri; Tam: inji, malai-icham; Tel: kondaita; Mar: shewra, shilind.
South Indian names are for plants which are sometimes separated under var. pedunculata, but treated under P. humilis by Brandis, Indian Trees.
Thank you for the information sir.

Kindly help in identification of this Palm Tree.
Date/time:march14
location:ambyvalley rd.,lonavala,pune
habitat:wild
plant habit:tree
height:about 6-7 ft.upto the tip
other info:flowers attract a lot of honeybees
My guess is Phoenix robusta
may be canary island palm, not sure though
would like to see it in its entirety, if you had a chance to take it all in.
This is the same https://www.flickr.com/photos/49876611@N06/6165335635/in/photolist-aoNXug, i posted earlier identified as Chamerops humilis. Of course it is not cultivated.
I have seen Phoenix robusta in the location you mentioned. In this area they are often very short trees, sometimes only a few feet. Your posted pictures resemble mine. It is often difficult to get an image of an entire tree.
Let me get this straight. Does it mean P.robusta= P. loureiroi var. pedunculata= P. loureirii var. humilis= P. humilis Royle ex Baker.Hook
Kindly clarify and thanks for the help. Appreciate it.
I spent a very long time trying to sort out these similar species of Phoenix even after seeing plants with flowers and fruits for several years!
From the available literature it appears there is some confusion between them.
I finally went with the description of P. robusta given in Talbot's Forest Flora of Bombay Presidency and Sind because it is the most detailed and most closely matches with the plants I have seen in Lonavala area. It may be that the plant displays some differences according to soil, exposure to wind etc.
Please look it up and see what you think.
If any experts can throw more light on the specific distinctions between these species that would be great!
Thanks for posting this plant.
Do try the fruits if you get a chance to pick them before the monkeys. They are very sweet. The seeds germinate easily and you can propagate the trees!

Can anybody please tell me which Phoenix species (one or many) have leaflets with copper/rust (or anything other than green) colored tips?
Phoenix are difficult to identify if the locality is unknown. In cultivation they hybridize. Is this a wild plant?
Yes it is wild plant
