Calamus tenuis is a tree/shrub? : 5 posts by 4 authors.
Recently i was in Bihar>>Paschim Champaran. I came across Swamp forest in which Calamus tenuis was growing Luxuriously. Right now i was making the plant profile for this species but am not able to put this in a tree or a shrub. i referred most of the site where it is referred as climbing palms/ rattans. can any body suggest wheather it falls under tree or a shrub.
Calamus tenuis has tender climbing stems.
Yes ... it has got spines alover the stem, rachis as well on leaves and midrib for climbing purpose. i am finding difficulty in assingning a habit for it wheather it is a tree or a shrub or a liana(in extreme taught).

Sorry I have only one picture taken from a long distance as it was not possible to leave the vehicle and go closer inside the jungle.
These are rattan, probably, Calamus rotang. They are very spiny and very hamrful. I have been stuck with them many times and they hurt badly :((
Hope you didnt go in. You can find them near shallow water streams with good light.
Stem and leaves are used in making baskets....
These could be Calamus tenuis.
Calamus tenuis. They are distributed all over wet areas in shivaliks. Near hardwar they are abundant along the streams.

Calamus tenuis Roxb. is a common cane in Tarai areas of Uttarakhand.
Thanks ... for these valuable additions. Could you please integrate them and add to the list included in the introduction. Regards
