Fruits & Vegetables Week: RVS-19:  Typhonium trilobatum, 'Karunai kizhangu' in Tamil. The corm (underground stem) is used (after boiling in salt water to nullify the calcium oxalate rhaphides) as vegetable. Picture was taken at medicinal plants garden within FRLHT campus, bangalore.
-The corms used to be plentyly available in the markets earlier. For some reasons, they are rarely seen nowadays. I dont think i have a picture of plant with corm.

Seeing this species first time.
The species found in temperate Uttarakhand is edible. Is T.trilobatum edible?
This is a weed here, no one eats any part of this plant.
... informs that the leaves of this plant are eaten as vegetables (in North Bengal). And, there it is known as THARKUN in Bengali. But, here it is known as GHETKOL or GHETKEL. "Bengal Plants" informs two Bengali names - 1) GHET KACHU 2) GHEKOOL/GHEKUL.

Can you please ID this root vegetable taken from a market in Chennai in March 2014. Retailer said it is senai kizhangu (Tamil). A search in internet shows senai kizhangu and karanai kizhangu are same (elephant yam/elephant foot yam - Amorphophallus paeoniifolius Syn: Amorphophallus campanulatus).
For me morphologically senai kizhangu and karanai kizhangu are quite different. Karanai kizhangu (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) is large, round and saucer shaped.
Can you please clarify this and ID the root vegetable in the picture,
Plz collect plant pictures as well as flower and leaves
This is 'Pidikkaranai' in Tamil. Typhonium trilobatum, I suppose.
