Request for ID : 150111 : AK-1: Taken at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, Sri Lanka on the 17th of November, 2010.
Plant Identification Request 20111007: I clicked a pic of this plant with these very large leaves, with each leaf being at least 2 feet broad and 2.5 feet long. The height of the plant was well above 8 feet. The petiole was also quite thick. It was growing in IIT Bombay. Could you please let me know what plant it could be? This may be one of the cultivars of Alocasia macrorrhizos.
I agree with ... that this could be a cultivar of Alocasia macrorrhizos Hooghly Today : Alocasia indica Schott: This seems to be the Alocasia indica Schott of "Bengal Plants", recorded today. I tried to find its current accepted name, but confused :- This is edible arum and a good number of people likes it. But unlike what had been recorded in "Bengal Plants", these days, it is not cultivated locally. It grows on its own, with scattered distribution all over Hooghly and locally known as MAN-KOCHU. Some people collect it from rural natural habitat to satisfy urban palates. You may like to find the details of various Alocasia described in F. I. -

This defies FoC's description of the genus, "appendix conic to cylindric, with irregular, labyrinthine network of fissures." Sorry, ... for misleading many times that Alocasia must have appendix as described in FoC. This species is photographed today, and my first record of flowers of this species whatever the taxon might turn out! efi page on Alocasia macrorrhizos (syn: Arum indicum Lour.) Thanks ..., the question perhaps is not the validation of the id but if it can be synonymous with the A. macrorrhizos (L.) G. Don. (i know what TPL or FoC or Tropicos or GRIN thinks). If we could receive view of ... on this species...... I can't reply with photos just now (not at my office until next week) but I think some photos of Alocasia macrorrhizos in the Philippines will be useful for you to see. Hay suggested several years ago that A. indica is synonymous with A. macrorrhizos, and I think this is very likely to be true. Attachments (1)- The genus Alocasia in Australasia.pdf Many thanks to ... for his view and the document on Australasian Alocasia. The shared doc informs appendix of Alocasia can be smooth to sulcate to synandrodial to staminodial. The same doc informs in Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) G. Don appendix is staminodial. Now, what is staminodial appendix? I search and find one - http://families.e-monocot.org/file-colorboxed/2957 (source http://families.e-monocot.org/gallery?page=17). Attached here cropped original picture of part of the appendix of this specimen. I am not sure if this appendix can be called "staminodial". A KEW description tells me that appendix of A. m. has irregular furrows. Again I fail to apprehend (1) how these furrows are different from the description of the appendix above (2) if my specimen features those furrows. On the other hand FoC illustration shows different kind of appendix of A. m. Is appendix of A. m. variable, specially when it is cultivated? Develops regional variability? In feature, in length? Attachments (1) Like Flora of China, appendix of A. macrorrhizos had also been clearly illustrated in literature below - But, appendix in my species differs. My concern is that should we ignore this difference assuming that other characters tally with A. macrorrhizos?
