Saw this Crape Jasmine in Sitabani, near an Ancient Temple on 17/5/14.
The shape of the flower looks different from the ones usually seen, and is a bit confusing.
Kindly validate.
It is Tabernaemontana divaricata; what we are seeing here is the wild form. It is found in wild form in this area. (Based on the Osmaston 1927, an excellent document to identify woody flora of the region).
Thanks a lot ... for confirming the id.
What is it known as locally?

It is Tabernaemontana coronaria.
Can you request Varun Ji to have a look at these?
Is this Tabernaemontana coronaria as suggested by ...?
Don't know about Muscat species, but we have it here in Hooghly too, very common.

We had three or four TAGAR in our home yard. This one is about 5 years old, 5 ft shrub. It has never produced fruits, but flowering almost through out year.
Corolla tube avg. 2.6 cm long, lobes have same length. Since stamens are inserted above middle of corolla tube it should not be T. divaricata (L.) R. Br. ex Roem. & Schult.
A few com sites labelled similar flowers as T. corymbosa while Toptropicals has T. orientalis which is similar looking. Twigs have lenticels as in T. pandacaqui Lam. which maybe the accepted name of T. orientalis!
What would be its correct id?
Seems to be T. coronaria.
Thank you ...
is there any BSI survey on all the tagars in india?

2015april_sk17/17 : Tabernaemontana sp. variegated : 6 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (5)
This is yet another 5 ft shrub, with non fragrant flowers, in a railway station.
Except the variegated leaves all stats are same as in my earlier post, "2015april_sk14/14 : Tabernaemontana sp."
There is Tabernaemontana sp. variegata in Toptropicals.
There is T. divaricata with variegated leaf in certain com site
There is T. corymbosa with variegated leaf in certain other website
There is T. pandacaqui with variegated leaf in several other websites.
I do not know which one is this.
Not very sure but I had come across the same plant in a garden in Mumbai.
On searching, it could be Tabernaemontana divaricata 'Splash'.
This is just a suggested id.
Thank you very much ..., but the question is how do you differentiate it with http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Great_Rosebay_(Tabernaemontana_corymbosa)_(Variegated_Leaf).jpg or with http://www.flowersweb.info/forum/forum9/topic146647/messages/?PAGEN_1=4 (please scroll down)?
Now I am also confused.
Let us wait for experts to comment.
Thanks to ..., this is also Tabernaemontana divaricata (L.) R. Br. ex Roem. & Schult..

Double-flowered form of Tabernaemontana divaricata: Sending a photo of Moonbeam flower.
Place : Matheran
Date  :  15.4.2011
Tabernaemontana divaricata cv. Flore Feno, formerly T. coronaria
Ervatamia divaricata (L.) Burkill var. plena (Voight)
Ervatamia divaricata (L.) Burkill var. plena (Voight) Almeida (comb. nov). Tabernaemontana coronaria var. plena Roxb. ex Voight, Hort. Suburb. Cal. 527, 1845. (Curtis, Bot. Mag. 44: t. 1865, 1816)
This a double flowered variety found in cultivated in the gardens
    Flowers: Throughout the year.
- We should not use comb. nov. (or sp. nov., nom. nov. etc.) when citing a published name, because every name would have belonged to that category when first published. It is done only by the original author in the original publication, We just mention the name of the author (followed preferably by year of publication, and also full citation if available).
Ervatamia divaricata var. plena (Roxb. ex Voigt) M.R.Almeida has been relegated as synonym of Tabernaemontana divaricata as per Kew Plant List. So best choice is just to treat it as cultivar 'Flore Pleno' only
 - Correct name for Tabernaemontana divaricata is Ervatamia divaricata (L.) Burkill. Stapf. segregated the genus Ervatamia from Tabernaemontana L. so any how the cv. 'Flore Pleno' should not go under genus Tabernaemontana L.
- We can't ignore the reputed databases GRIN and Kew Plant List. Both treat Ervatamia as a synonym and Tabernaemontana as accepted name especially so for T. divaricata. And also as var. pleno is relegated to synonymy of T. divaricata, we have no choice other than just calling it as cultivar 'Flore Pleno'
Please note that Dr. Almeida suggested this variety combination in 2001, and lot has changed in last 10 years.
- Here are links.
http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/tax_search.pl
Not a single species is accepted name at present.
- Very common variety in gardens of South India (Chennai and other places).

Tabernamontana divericata miniature with Butterfly in Kolkata UD 08052011 005: at a local Ashram garden... it was tranquil, very hot and  the TAGAR miniature tabernamontana divericata were blooming and  seemed to be popular with a group of Chilades pandava pandava butterflies...
the first one is a recent hatch- ling I think... its wings are intact...
the one with the open wings has seen better days... there are tears on its wings...
fights with fellow butterflies or flew into a crow or two who may have tried to make a meal of them...  ????
Nice catch.  Miniature tabernamontana divericata are ornamental and being popularised.  I have these plants in my garden and observed many insects and butterflies visiting the plant.

Flora of Haryana: Tabernaemontana Divaricata from ITI Gannour Sonipat Haryana campus: Tabernaemontana divaricata from ITI Gannour Sonipat Haryana campus
Growing there in garden
nice...flowers white are often difficult to photograph...
Tagar is very common street bush/ small tree in parts of Calcutta... the white flowers carpet the sidewalks often.
fallen flowers are not useful for puja... and with prices of puja flowers sky rocketing .. Now a days I see these tagar being "attacked"  by Homo sapien domesticus so much so that not a single flower or bud is left ... Gods must be happy with their daily offerings though...
Local markets sell garlands made of these Tagar flowers... apparently Tagar is grown in the flower belt just for that purpose...

efloraofindia:''For Id 10032012MR1’’ herb with white flowers at Pune:  Kindly help Id this herb at Pune
I had got this herb last monsoon from a local nursery at Pune.
Height/Length- about 6-7 inches
I do not have the dimensions of leaves and flowers but the leaves and flowers appeared like a dwarf variety of 'Tagar' as we call in Marathi.
Unfortunately this delicate plant did not survive the heavy monsoon that we had last year

ID of Host Plant requested - 161012 - RK5:  Would appreciate ID of the host plant. This was a special request when i had posted these pics on Indian Flora. I had referred to this in my previous post -161012 - RK4. Pics taken in Lalbagh, Bangalore on 11/12/11 at 8.45am.
Tabernaemontana divaricata cultivar
... I just cant let this pass..... you have sent me LOL kinda set of pic... the green monster face looks like a green baby hippopotamus...
and the last one reminds me of the book The very hungry caterpillar, its as if this guy was the model for the paitings in this book.. I love that book and so do millions of kids and their parents and aunts (: ) ) ....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Very_Hungry_Caterpillar
I loved it.. and the plant is definitely a tabernamontana and not the golden gardenia in the other post... in Bengal we call it TAGAR .... the flower buds give it away ... though the gardenia and tagar leaves may sometimes be similar esp the young leaves...
... and the very hungry caterpillar is of Daphnis nerii , commonly known as
Oleander Hawk moth

Tabernaemontana divaricata (L.) R.Br. ex Roem. & Schult.  ??

yes. often scented

Yes ...!

Was it labelled ? To me looks different from images at Tabernaemontana

Sorry, it was not labeled ...!

this is what bengali gardeners call : double tagar, in gujarati: butmogro. tabernamontana....
i wish the botnist/taxonomists had given it a separate identity. but they have not it seems.

This is one of the hybrids of Tabernaemontana divaricata I think.

this site calls it. gardenia Barbados.
you have to scroll and scroll till almost halfway down this loooong page
Thank you. ... I also have this plant with me.

i used to  have one also, but neglect killed it one year when i was tending to some relatives' terminal illness. description says its flowers have scent but mine locally sourced, did not. so there must  two variants: one with scent, another without.
i have seen and experienced very fragrant variety double tagar plants in a long row in a temple in Bihar.
The website calls it Tabernaemontana divaricata and the common name is Gardenia barbados.
I believe this is a hybrid or a double petaled polyploid form of T. divaricata and not the original T. divaricata.

you are right, ...  i am all for lumping in classification but in this case i would go for splitting, and  create a new species, name it away from t. divaricata. may be genetic studies will show enough differences to split it off from t. divaricata but i wont live to see it!!!
giving ideas to professors to direct some ms or phd candidates? ms may be. good project. who knows
Giving a new name doesn't take much time though and you will surely live to see the new name if given, don't worry. BUT, I advice not to give, Because, this seems more like a garden cultivar than a wild one.

ha ha and bless you. long live me? but the way they cut down newer names and label then illegitimate. i shudder when i see them in the plant list as illegitimate.
wonder who took the time to cultivate it enough to do selective breeding to get double tagar (bengali name).
may be i will or someone will stumble on its story in some old gardening or botanical magazine such as Curtis's ...
may be some one cultivated or even sometimes such aberration occurs naturally in wild. Its just for someone to pick up and make a market for it. There are many such examples.
In China and Japan they keep looking for such aberrations in wild on orchids like Cymbidium. For example a Cymbidum in wild with variegated leaves may sell for thousands.
Sometimes they do inbreeding to bring out such deformities and of course then there is a market for such plants too.
very true, keen gardeners and collectors are always on look out for the unusual.
