Attachments (10) I find this plant at deciduous forests of Northern Konkan: Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and Sanjay Gandhi National Park. ... attached photos with file names having location and the dates. I have referred Ingalhalikar ji's Further Flowers of Sahyadri. The book has 3 Heterostemma species illustrated, of which 2 are very close what I have found. Page 345 and 348 show H. dalzellii and H. tanjorense respectively. H. dalzellii is distributed in deciduous forests of Northern Konkan And, H. tanjorense in evergreen forests of southern hills of Sahyadri. Today's find at Yeoor Hills (part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park), I discovered that the central structure of the flower changes colour. I have started thinking it to be H. dalzellii based on distribution and appearance-wise (earlier had thought it to be H. tanjorense). Since it is not ditto as shown in the book, ID please ... it could be some other species of Heterostemma not known to me. I hope you now get to see the attachments. As put in the message above, I found Heterostemma plants in large numbers -- about 10 -12 separate places along a trail in Yeoor Hills, last Sunday (16 AUG) At Tungareshwar, I have not found the plant this year yet; perhaps yet to flower. In the photos above, point to notice is the central structure of flower changing its colour from cream to golden yellow to maroon. To avoid confusion, I have not added photos in which, the petals (I hope, they are petals) are of maroon colour ... not sure whether it is just a change due to ageing of flowers OR a different species of Heterostemma. I have collected this plant from SGNP, Borivali and it came out to be Heterostemma dalzellii Hook.f. in Fl. Brit. India 4: 48, 1883; Cooke, Fl. Pres. Bombay 2: 232, 1958 (Repr.); Almeida, Fl. Mah. 3: 246, 2001; Singh et al, Fl. Mah. St. 2: 365, 2001. Synonyms: H. wallichii Dalz. & Gibs., Bombay Fl. 152, 1861. Thank you very much, ... Each of the species referred to this genus has a form of the crown peculiar to itself: the first has the leaflets dilated, entire, and spreading, with the interior pro-cess similar in form but smaller ; the second has them obcordate, much dilated, with the margins free and overlapping, and the interior process erect flesh j, incumbent on and nearly equalling the gynostegium in height; in the third thej are furnished with a subulate tooth or horn on the back, wmle the interior process is re- duced to a mere gland. Here the flowers are said to be 1.5 cm. This should be T. indica (syn T. asthamatica). ... are right. I only made a wild guess that it might be T. dalzelli ...: did you check for other Tylphora species in TN / S. india. I am attaching the photo of T. indica (syn. T. asthmatica). The petals and corona are whitish whereas in your species the petals are orange and the corona is purplish brown. Could it be an interesting hybrid ? Attachments (2) This is not Tylophora, its a species of Heterostemma or Oyanthus Swarupanandan et al., (1989) reduced Oianthus as synonymous to Heterostemma. Maybe you are right about this plant being Heterostemma. Which species ? Corolla valvate, corona lobes spreading away from the staminal column is Heterostemma. I agree with ... It seems to be H. dalzelli that shows a lot of variations in colour. You are absolutely right, I have that paper. If you study this genus you will realise that there is tremendous variation in color, form and texture of the corolla. Even the corona shows a lot of variation. The species delimitation is also very unclear. So I wont be able to say more unless I get the specimen in hand. But I somehow very strongly feel its Heterostemma.

This would probably be identified by our members as Heterostemma dalzelli. Spoke to Dr. Almeida & Santosh Yadav. Their take : - Heterostemma dalzelli is the only species of Heterostemma that occurs in Maharashtra and is very rare. In fact, Dr.Almeida claimed that he has till date not actually seen a decent specimen. - what occurs in the Borivali N.P. is most likely a species of Oianthus. - further study is required. Sending a few of my photographs. how big are the flowers? 1 inch. Beautiful flower and a truly attractive colour. Does the petal have protusions? Oianthus is now a synonym of Heterostemma (by Swarupanandan et. al., 1989). But we have to find out which spiecies it is? the plant in question is definately not Heterostemma dalzelli. infact we have a altogether different plant of Heterostemma dalzelli which is collected from SGNP. The posted Heterostemma species leaves are not matching with H.dalzelli....i suppose .. ..., you could be correct with your doubt. I have noticed these flowers and plant for about 4 - 5 times, flowers changing their colours as per age, leaves too being variable. At base they are quite large with irregular shape as well as randomly sunk and raised surface; upper leaves getting smaller in size and shape getting regular. Will wait for comment(s). Me too keen on knowing this plant, and whether there is any other species in SGNP of Heterostemma. This is Oianthus deccanensis.
