Vinca rosea hybrids in Chennai: These Vinca rosea hybrids seem to like the soil etc in our garden. Some of my neighbours complain that they emit a foul odour which is a nuisance in the ground floor apartments. Is this possible? One neighbour complained that it was not orderly  - having grown out of its alloted space. I was thrilled that SOMETHING was flourishing in our garden and not going into the usual wither -and -die routine!
They do have an unplesant odour but its is not so strong that it can reach your neighbor.
I did not know that there were hybrids in Vinca sp. You get the odour when you take it close and try to smell it.
Perhaps the source of  foul odour  is somewhere else. I remember how our neighbours frowned upon our compost box in our garden, many years ago, as composting was not yet "in". The source of odour was their own garbagecollector. It took time to convince them that compost is not at all the source of odour, if done properly. Now they have three boxes in their garden.  :-)))
It may sound awkward but the best way to check a compost is to smell it.... the best ones would have no smell at all. It smells only when it is still decomposing.
That is what i meant .., the source was not our box. anyway my neighbours are convinced and have started composting. But in one year we had too many ants there and the compost had a very pleasent smell. The ants are gone now.

Plant pacifies vitiated pitta, kapha, diabetes, hypertension, leukemia and malignancy, the root is stomachic and tonic.
Useful part : Whole plant

The pink one is MOSTLY NOT ACCEPTED BY HERBAL MEDICINE FOLKS AS MEDICINAL....ANYWHERE ....
Most likely most of the Allopathic drug companies use all colors and types of this for vincristine ( and other med) isolation...
Not strictly an Ayurvedic herb... not in Charak or Susruta...'s writings...
AM not sure if Todar Mal in AKbar's court included this in his compendium of Ayurvedic Medicines and Indian foods and vegetables
I personally do not know the history of this inclusion in AYurvedic medicine...
ALTHOUGH IT IS PART OF THE MODERN HERBOLOGY ALL OVER THE WORLD>>>

Sadafuli:   I just joined the group and am amazed at the wonderful activity and camaraderie surrounding Indian plants on this platform. I am from Bangalore but now based in Mumbai. Not much of a photographer myself but after seeing the messages here I feel encouraged to pick up the camera and start to identify and learn more about plants. I share with you some images of different varieties of Sadafuli from my terrace garden at home.
Yes nice photographs of Catharanthus roseus (Vinca rosea). Incidentally I captured the same cultivars here in California.

most likely these are hybrids.... madagaskar originals are two colors that we are all very familiar with . they seed profusely... these hybrids don't…

During 1965-68 I was doing my Honours in Chemistry from Darjeeling Govt. College. Our professors used to talk about Dr. Asima Chatterjee (who was a renowned professor of chemistry at that time). To day Google has made a doodle on Dr. Asima Chatterjee. Her contribution on study of alkaloids extracted from Indian plants is phenomenal. Results of her study on alkaloids from Catharanthus roseus (Syn. Vinca rosea) is used in chemotherapy of certain types of cancer.
Tribute to that great scientist of India.

Wonderful thoughts, thanks Col Bimal for sharing..tributes to a great scientist and teacher...
