Nice to see pink flowering form.
.. Its a Common plant among the areca garden of Sirsi..
The fruits get dispersed chiefly by the animals including humans.. and a nuisance in weeding the garden.
In this way, I may call this as a plant of beauty and beast ! :)
... had provided me the ID of Pupalia atropurpurea for this herb.
While compiling common names for the ID, got surprised to find that the species is now considered synonym of P. lappacea, a large perennial scrambler undershrub. Both species are described in Cooke's
Flora of the Presidency of Bombay.
Photography technique is superb
Very good find.
Cooke Flora gives a better description.
BSI Mah flora mentions only 2 var. of Pupalia lappacea
Leaves ovate-elliptic c 8 cm long. Flower awns yellow ... ... ... ... Var. lappacea
Leaves suborbicular, 2-3 cm long; Flower awns brown ... ... ... ... Var.
orbicular
while I am believing to be Pupalia lappacea as per ID from ..., I have received comment in facebook from ..., and also from ..., that it must be Cyathula prostrata. Please validate with comments.
This is Cyathula prostrata only.
If you can zoom in or have any other pictures,
one can check for staminodes in between the stamens to confirm the genus Cyathula rather than Pupalia.
This is Cyathula prostrata not Pupalia lappacea
I understood that you are very much sure about the species
I was just trying to fit the key characters given in the books to the pictures as a part of study. I am not aware of both the species in the field. Hope my beliefs about the Keys are true. My earlier sentence might have created confusion. I was trying to find the staminodes as a part of using the differentiating key.
Many thanks ... for the ID.
I am sure you are familiar with both plants - any straight (glaring) difference ?
My query is out of curiosity ... whether is it yet closely resembling Pupalia atropurpurea to be specific.

Chenopodiaceae and Amaranthaceae Week :: PKA12 :: Amaranthaceae sp. for ID from Mizoram:
This herb is from Mizoram.
Family: Amaranthaceae.
(Earlier this was discussed and it was suggested that this could be Achyranthes bidentata).
Date/Time: 9th Nov./ 10:40AM
Location: Mizoram
Habitat: Wild
Plant Habit: Herb
Leaves: Opposite, rhomboid with short petioles, nerves prominent around 7 pairs...
May be some Pupalia species.
I think ... may be right.
I think this is Cyathula, possibly Cyathula prostrata (L) Bl. Bijdr., as in -

Me too would think of this plant being some species of Cyathula, and just as ... thought, most probably C. prostrata.
Not sure because - not seen yet any species of Pupalia.
I am yet to see any Cyathula and one of the synonyms of Cyathula prostrata, given in the F. B. I., is Pupalia prostrata Mart.!
I think :-
  1. the leaves of this plant is somewhat rhomboid, unlike Pupalia lappacea
  2. in Pupalia the tepals are more acutely angled
  3. spike in Pulalia is significantly longer and rests upon vegetations
  4. of the three Pupalia described in F. B. I., P. orbiculata Wight is restricted in Concan Ghats and Carnatic. The rest two, P. lappacea & P. atropurpurea are synonyms today!

Thanks ... for further elaborating the aspects of Cyathula and Pupalia.
I am not familiar with species of either; both genera seem to be close enough to be synonymous in some of their species.
Hopefully the ID gets resolved.
Me too ..., don't understand the difference; and it's hairline :-
stamens with interposed staminodes ------ Cyathula
stamens without staminodes ------ Pupalia
The botanists those days had some powerful lenses!!!

Achyranthes ?? 100510-PKA1 : 6 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (2)
Came across this herb at Mizoram. Looks like Achyranthes sp. ??
Bot. name: Achyranthes ??
Family: Amaranthaceae
Date/Time: 9th Nov./ 10:40AM
Location: Mizoram
Habitat: Wild
Plant Habit: Herb
Leaves: Opposite, rhomboid with short petioles, nerves prominent around 7 pairs...
Should be A. bidentata
Achyranthes bidentata Blume is a species of Achyranthes that grows in India, Nepal, China, and Japan. It is the source of Huái niú xī, a Chinese herbal medicine with anti-inflammatory activities. In Nepal its root juice is used for toothache. Its seeds have been used as a substitute for cereal grains in famine years
This must be Cyathula prostrata.

Pupalia lappacea  (L.) Juss.

Sorry, ..., Check again seems not, Cythula prostrata only,
... is on the right path i think.
looks different in this herbarium from janaki herbarium on the net
and Cythula :  looks very different, similar to your pictures
What you sent reference is correct, But your post is Cyathula only, You can go throw this.
Habit up 1.5 m high., erect, Inflorescence dense spike and has spiny bristles........Pupalia
Habit up to 75 cm long decumbent, some times prostrate, Inflorescence loose spike, haven't spiny bristles.........Cythula
Thank you very very much ... for pointing to the error. Indeed it is Cyathula prostrata - I always mistake this one for Pupalia. And despite it, I did not bother to match plants in my collection. Sheer haste and over-confidence !!!
Thanks very much ... Will quickly correct my notes in flickr.
