The post informs the species is Celosia argentea var. spicata, the current accepted name of which is Celosia spicata Spreng. This is a wild herb growing on roadside in Hooghly, recorded yesterday (25/10/12). Yes ..., very common as a weed. May sometimes be confused with Gomphrena globosa but has alternate leaves (opposite in Gomphrena). sharing picture of Celosia argentea var. spicata: Sharing picture of Celosia argentea var. spicata, taken at my farmhouse in Mulshi,Pune. Request confirmation Good picture indeed. This is the inflorescence. Just search for the small individual flower inside this cock's comb. You will find small stamens and anthers too. Attaching one of my images showing the individual flower. Beautiful pictures from both the ... Yes Celosia argentea var spicata, very good pictures and the closeup in particular. Celosia spicata I hope Agreed there is a lot of confusion in names under Celosia, but would it be right to call it as C. spicata? I think you are right ... As you mentioned, it is unclear if it has to be treated at variety level (ref. many databases), specific level (TPL) or as synonym under C. argentea (s.l.). But I support giving it (and other taxa such as plumosa and cristata) a status (preferably at varietal level) instead clubbing all under C. argentea, in order to understand the level of 'distinct' variations/forms. The flowers are bearing lovely colours to attract the sunbird possibly in eclipsed plumage. Both pictures are taken in Maharashtra. location:mulshi, pune plant habit: shrub I suppose height: about3 ft. date/time:jan11 location:mulshi, pune habitat:wild plant habit:-- height:about 2 ft. I hope Celosia argentea I thought of Polygonaceae!! Though inflorescence looks to me of Celosia argentea, the braching pattern is puzzling. I don't see as ochrea of Polygonaceae. Celosia argentia- a member of Amaranthaceae. No confusion and this species is found everywhere in and around the agriculture field in our areas. It is Celosia argentea (not argentia). efloraindia: 160911 BRS 22: Pl. find the attached file contain a photo of grass for id.

Plant for ID : 30/11/2011 SMP3 Sinhagad: A herb observed on Sinhagad fort 25th Nov 2011. Overall the flowers were fairly similar to Celosia argentia but the spikes were much much smaller. The leaves are green bigger. There were other Celosia argentia plants not very close but nearby which had larger spikes and mostly leafless as against this plant with globular inflorescence. The inflorescence looks like Celosia argentea, but the leaves in the second pic point to a different plant. I may be wrong but to me there seems a mix up. Yes ... is correct. Leaves in second photograph and most in first and third belong to a different species. You seem to be correct. On carefully observing the spikes of Celosia appear to be emerging through other plants Found widely growing in many places around farms and fields very beautiful pictures ..., esp the one with the insect :) TFS Place : Kasara, near Mumbai Date : March 2010 Habitat : wild Others : favorite of butterflies Beautiful photograph along with butterfly. Many thanks to all for appreciation. Agreed ..., this must be Celosia argentea L.This is Celosia spicata Spreng. found on roadside. Yes Surajit ji Very good photographs it is celosia argentia "Bengal Plants" describes :- (i) Flowers white, glistening, .35 in. long or larger ---------- argentea (ii) Flowers pink, rose or yellow, .25 in. long or smaller ------- cristata Celosia argentea L. - In all provinces, cultivated and as an escape. An erect annual, 1-3 feet high. Celosia cristata L. - In all provinces, cultivated; occasionally as an escape. An erect annual, 2-3 feet high. "Flora of British India" describes :- Celosia argentea L. - Annual, glabrous...... flowers white, glistening...... The top of the spikes sometimes branches out in a cock's comb form. "Flora Indica" doesn't help much :-
None of the above descriptions indicates that C. argentea L. can be pink (white+pink) too. But, according to :-

Googling for Celosia spicata reults :- kindly go through this link http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-2707791 "The Plant List" link, http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-2707791, lists a number of synonyms for Celosia argentea L. and two of those synonyms are Celosia cristata L. and Celosia argentea var. cristata (L.) Kuntze. Similarly,
Google image search for the following taxa results :- Maximum number of images in the above search lead to flowers which are similar to ornamental varieties of cockscomb, having a distinct crest on the top of the flowers. On the other hand search result for Celosia spicata - yields maximum number of images similar to those in this thread and it was also identified in my earlier post of similar looking plant - https://groups.google.com/d/topic/indiantreepix/yMoF0vgyp-4/discussion. I admit i was wrong, it is Celosia argentea L. Difference between Celosia spicata & celosia argentea: There seems to be a lot of confusion between Celosia spicata & Celosia argentea during the Amaranthaceae Week in different threads. This appears to be same in efi site as well. To sort out the issue, I think we need to first find out the difference between the two. Experts may pl. help in sorting out the issue. Efi pages for both are given below: After going through the discussions in various threads in our group i find that what i am vehemently supporting as Celosia spicata Spreng actually is C. argentea L. ! ... also drew my notice, in the thread at - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/indiantreepix/y9hdl9jZ0Tc/discussion. FoC validates the above - http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=105991. FoP itself seems to be confused -

Thank you Thanks, ..., I also think that we should treat Celosia spicata Spreng under C. argentea in efi site otherwise there is a lot of confusion! Experts may confirm pl. As per the Karthikeyan et al 2009 (Flowering Plants of India) Celosia genus has three naturally occurring species in India. These are C.argentea (with two varieties, namely, C.argentea var. argentea and C.argentea var. cristata), C.polygonoides (restricted to S.India) and C.pulchella (restricted to SW Ghats Nilgiris). However, it does not mention introduced ornamental varieties. Graf 1992 (Hortica) has mentioned 'cockscomb' as a separate species C.cristata. However, Bailey 1949 in his classic 'Manual of Cultivated Plants' has mentioned C.argentea as a weed of tropical (Asian) origin with two cultivated forms- 1) very like the wild plants with long narrow silvery spikes (C.argentea var. argentea) and 2) most of the improved domesticated races, 'cockscomb' (C.argentea var. cristata). The links of Celosia pages in the Flora of British India -

why??? An unused field surrounded by other cultivation like Sesamum indicum, Amaranthus gangeticus and other crops!!! Isn't it interesting? very interesting... ... weeds in an overly fertilized after the main crop fallow field...may be? too much food in the soil... I wish the farmer had planted some soil nutrition enriching nitrogen-fixing bacterial hosts like some legumes... To recover soil fertility they do plant legumes, DHONCHE (Sesbania) how often and how widespread is the practice... This is an annual practice and by this time some already have started growing them. The plants are now about 3 to 4 ft tall. any pics? No, ..., haven't recorded any, for those plants are yet to flower. Attaching old pics. Please ID this small herb with white flowers on long spikes. Photo was taken in Sri Lanka in Oct 2012. Celosia argentea of Amaranthaceae. Yes the shots are quite distant but the possibility of Celosia argentea is high. Celosia argentea 'spicata' Very good picture.
