Chenopodiaceae and Amaranthaceae Week: status of genus Bassia ??: I was surprised to see that the genus Bassia in family Amaranthaceae, as I knew this genus as one of the genera in Sapotaceae. Most of the species of genus Madhuca in Sapotaceae have the synonym with genus Bassia. For ex. Madhuca neriifolia (Moon) H.J.Lam (= Bassia malabarica Bedd.). Now my question is WHEN and HOW this genus Bassia got tranfered to a very different Family Amaranthaceae ? What was the taxonomic affinity to assign this under Amaranthaceae ? Bassia under Sapotaceae is based on Bassia L., published in Mantissa plantarum, 1771 an illegitimate name because Bassia All., 1766 under Chenopodiaceae was published earlier. Hence all Sapotaceae Bassia taxa got names under some other genera. That was a clear answer, and many thanks for that. May be due to the lack of communication between themselves, many of the earlier workers used this generic name to the taxa of both Amaranthaceae and Sapotaceae.
